This fonds documents the administrative and teaching duties of Robert Spencer, as a Professor Emeritus of History and a specialist in European history, especially German history in the 19th and 20th centuries. They also document his education and his participation in World War II; his extensive international research, publications and speaking engagements; as well as his involvement with professional associations and organizations such as the University of Toronto Contingent, Canadian Officers Training Corps (COTC), the International Studies Programme and the Graduate Centre for International Studies, Altantik-Brücke, and the Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe (CSCE). Included is personal correspondence, correspondence with international organizations, government departments, embassies and consulates; lecture notes; manuscripts and addresses.

Also present are two sous-fonds. The first is the personal papers of his wife, Ruth Margaret Church Spencer, who served with the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service (WRENS) during World War II as a base librarian and afterwards as the first professional librarian at Canada House in London. The second consists of files compiled by Ralph Flenley, a specialist in German history and sometime chair of the Department of History: examination questions, student mark books, and drafts of an unpublished manuscript on Anglo-German relations.

Correspondence, minutes, memoranda, notes, reports, and press clippings documenting the activities of the Faculty of Arts and Science Constituency of the President's Council of the University of Toronto, as assembled by Professor Robert Spencer while a member of the Council. In addition to Council minutes and related material, there are files on several presidential advisory committees, the Advisory Planning Committee of the Board of Govemors, the University's Master Plan, the School of Hygiene, tenure (Haist Committee), and the Council's Sub-committee on Resource Planning. Included is material documenting the participation of professors C. B. Macpherson and J. B. Conacher.

This fonds consists of records documenting the founding, early activities, and 75th Anniversary of the Madawaska Club of Go Home Bay, Ontario. The records were acquired by the University of Toronto Archives over six accessions between 1974 and 1983.

Fonds consists of material related to the professional life of Hershell Ezrin, in particular his career in provincial and federal government. Records document his transition between roles as Canadian Consul, Executive Director of the Canadian Unity Information Office, and later, Principal Secretary to Ontario Premier, David Peterson. Extensive correspondence and press clippings reflect professional moves as well as the large network of individuals surrounding Ezrin in his positions in both the public and corporate sectors. The fonds also consists of addresses given by Ezrin following his time at Queen’s Park, personal and family correspondence and photographs, as well as images and publicity material related to the negotiations and patriation of the Constitution Act. This fonds contains records related to the professional activities and personal life of Dr. Ernest Mastromatteo, occupational physician. The bulk of the material in this fonds documents his roles as a medical practitioner, researcher, and occupational health director. The series documenting the activities of the Nickel Producers’ Environmental Research Association, an association Dr. Mastromatteo was heavily involved in during the 1980s, is the largest, with smaller series documenting his career at Inco, his work with the American Conference of Governmental and Industrial Hygienists, and his many projects, case studies, organizations, associations and societies, as well as legal cases he provided testimony in. There is also a relatively large amount of material documenting his research in the form of addresses, and additional material chronicling his time as a student at both the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine and the School of Hygiene.

Records include correspondence, notebooks, publications, drafts, prints, reports, meeting minutes and memoranda.

Personal records of Mary Mamie O'Brien (1926-1998), philosopher and feminist scholar, Professor Emerita in the Department of Sociology in Education at OISE. Includes files on: her education; professional correspondence; extensive drafts and manuscripts of her research, writings, and addresses; artistic works (poetry, short stories and a play); and photographs of Mary O'Brien with colleagues and friends.

Personal records of Margaret Allemang, documenting her career as a researcher, historian and professor of nursing history at the University of Toronto, and as a promoter and preserver of nursing history, primarily through her oral histories with nursing sisters from World Wars I and II, the Margaret Allemang Centre for the History of Nursing, and the Canadian Association for the History of Nursing/Association Canadienne pour l'Histoire du Nursing (CAHN/ACHN), the latter two of which she was a co-founder. There are also files on other professional organizations, including the Canadian Nurses Association, Elderhostel, and the Conference on Nursing History and other nursing conferences. Included are correspondence, appointment books, minutes, administrative and teaching files, oral history interviews, research notes, manuscripts, reports, newsletters, addresses and audiotapes.

The fonds consists of records kept by Stephen Reynolds during the course of his adult life. These include correspondence with family, friends, and colleagues that illuminate his personal life, his Christian faith, and his various pastoral and intellectual pursuits. Carbon copies of many outgoing letters were created and kept. Reynolds kept an intermittent diary through the time period represented here. These were sometimes typed, and often handwritten in small notebooks. He apparently removed pages from these notebooks and inserted them in files with correspondence and other material from the same time period.

Other records include academic papers, research material, sermons, prayers, drafts of manuscripts, course materials, and some official documents such as academic transcripts.

The papers of James Arnold Dauphinee are a particularly fine representation of their type. Highly intelligent and inventive, Dr. Dauphinee had an international reputation in his field, pathological chemistry. He maintained a broad range of other interest, from music to philately, and was known to play the occasional game of golf. He was something of a packrat but, fortunately, also a meticulous record keeper. His papers are of value to the reader from a number of perspectives. A history of the Department of Pathological Chemistry could not be written without reference to them. Dr. Dauphinee's files cover the years 1934-1972 and he also preserved some of the papers of his predecessor as head, Andrew Hunter. The Department is not well represented elsewhere in the holdings in the University Archives.

Dr. Dauphinee was very interested in new developments in research. After his return from military service during World War II, he became deeply involved in the study of the effects of radiation on the human body. His papers are a rich resource for this pioneering work, as they are for the work he began as a medical student on arginase and the functioning of the liver and carried on throughout the rest of his life. Dr. Dauphinee wrote numerous scientific papers, many of which were published. Some very interesting ones exist in draft form only, but contain his evolving ideas on problems being studied. He also believed in the wider dissemination of information, and was much in demand as a speaker. His papers contain many of his addresses and document his enthusiastic support of organizations such as the Royal Canadian. Institute.

He was also keenly interested in professional development and the maintenance of high standards in his discipline. He belonged to a large number of professional associations and devoted much energy to some of them, including the I College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. The qualities evident here and in his research were also reflected in his relationship with his patients. His concern for their well-being is evident in his extensive patient files and in the records he kept while on active service during World War II.

Macpherson Memorial Quilt, designed and made for him in 1989 by Ellen Adams from six of his academic hoods. Records in this fonds document most aspects of Prof. Rayside’s career as an administrator, activist and academic. Series 1 (Biographical) and 2 (Correspondence) give a good overview of his career and the professional correspondence in Series 2 relate to or complete most other series in the fonds. Correspondence can also be found in all other series.

His role as an adept administrator is documented not only in Series 3 (University of Toronto Administration) but also in the records found in Series 4 (Advocacy) and Series 5 (Professional Associations) where his leadership and involvement on committees is evident. Prof. Rayside’s academic interests coincided with his political activism and this is well documented in Series 4 (Advocacy) seen in reference to records in Series 7 (Books) and Series 8 (Articles, Papers and Talks) that extensively document his research and writing. Finally his roles as a teacher and mentor are well documented in Series 6 (Letters of Recommendations and Evaluations) and in Series 9 (Teaching).

Fonds consists of records created during Ron Collier's career as a performer, composer, arranger, teacher, and band leader. Series 30. A Tribute to Sam Kinison [1994, 1996]

Collection consists of approximately 6,500 78 rpm records, and the personal papers of one of its collectors, John Stratton. Stratton's personal papers provide contextual information about one of the collectors of the "Stratton-Clarke Collection," and primary source material relating to his research of historical vocal recordings and recording practices.

The 78 rpm record collection spans nearly the entire history of 78 rpm record production, from acoustic recordings to early electronic recordings and beyond, covering the first half of the twentieth century. The recordings are primarily pressed on shellac discs, ranging from 7 to 14 inches on diameter, and capture performances of approximately 1,000 vocalists, performing the works of more than 900 different composers on at least 100 different labels. The collection was loosely built on four of Stratton's main interests regarding historical vocal recordings: the "Golden age of singing" (pre World War One); the Mapleson recordings (live Metropolitan Opera performances captured on wax cylinders by Lionel Mapleson between 1900 and 1904); Canadian performers; and pre-revolutionary Russian recordings (pre-1917). The collection includes unpublished and test pressings, as well as published materials.

Fonds consists of the administrative, financial, and performance records of the Aldeburgh Connection. Most of the fonds consists of materials created for, and as a result of, each concert produced by the Aldeburgh Connection, including promotional materials, scripts, annotated scores, correspondence, research notes, and reviews. The fonds also contains textual materials from the production of the Aldeburgh Connection’s recording projects, promotional events, board minutes, complete financial records, and correspondence regarding their fundraising efforts.

Fonds consists of material documenting the career of Prof. Guido Pugliese as Associate Professor in the Department of Language Studies at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM), and to a limited extent, his involvement in the local Italian Canadian community. Records include textual records such as CVs, correspondence, course material, play scripts and programs, as well as photographs and video recordings mostly related to Italian plays at UTM.

Most of the files relate to his research work on sleep problems over many years, in particular those associated with the astronauts and cosmonauts on the NASA shuttle/Mir space station in the 1990’s, as part of the Microgravity, Sleep and Immune Functions in Humans (SWIF) project. Also included is the first working model of a sleep apnea machine (ca. 1983).

Contains the personal and professional records of Robert Arnold Russel. This includes photographs of Russel and his family, information regarding his early life including schooling and university, family tree information and identifying documents such as baptism records and passports. The collection contains a comprehensive collection of Russel’s diaries and daytimers spanning from 1949 to his death in 2011. Professional records include materials pertaining to his early career in theatre, film and broadcasting, during the course of which he resided in France, England and Montreal. His career as an information professional and futurist is recorded extensively including his penning of the term “intersex” and “cybersex” in 1967 and his interview with Marshall McLuhan in 1962. As a futurist, Russel’s operated several businesses, most specifically, Orba Information (also called Orbafilm and Orba Inc), which operated between 1967 and 1993, which is archived in great detail, a smaller amount of information on later businesses including Rapid Response Inc., Toronto, Institute for Research on Public Policy and The Consortium for National Development is also available. Collection also contains drafts, proposals, budgets and storyboards surrounding Russel’s personal creative writing, including The Spark, a proposed television program and I am Haida, a proposed CD-ROM and game on Haida culture, and novels – The Petrans and Clone.

Contains the papers of Joan Treble (Sutton) Straus including a small amount of material regarding her early life including primary and high school education (1939-1950), as well as at her time at the University of Toronto (1950-1953). Includes material such as photographs and newspaper clippings related to her modeling career and her work as a fashion consultant (1952-1970). The collection covers Sutton Straus’ career as a journalist with the Toronto Telegram (1971), The Toronto Star (1972-1979, 1981-1992) and The Toronto Star (1979-1981, 1992). This includes correspondence from readers, co-workers and well-known politicians, entertainers and dignitaries, as well as photographs of Sutton Straus during the course of her work. The material also includes clippings of her columns, interviews and articles preserved by Sutton Straus, as well as three oversized scrapbooks containing clippings from her time at the Toronto Telegram and The Toronto Sun. The collection also comprises material related to Sutton Straus’ career as an author of six books, and her long-term volunteer work with non-profit and philanthropic organizations in both Canada and the United States. The collection also contains a small amount of personal material related to Sutton Straus including media appearances, speeches, newspaper and magazines articles, invitations and correspondence.

Fonds consists of the professional and personal records of composer Michael Colgrass. The collection includes manuscripts of his compositions; administrative and financial documents relating to commissions with orchestras, performers, and publishers; and materials generated from the performance of these compositions (including recordings, programs, reviews, and program notes). Other records relate to workshops that Colgrass led, particularly his Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) workshops and Colgrass' writings, including poetry, articles, manuscripts and notes for his books, and correspondence with friends and colleagues.

Subseries One: Commercial Releases includes Paul Hann’s commercial albums and singles, with songs written by White. Records in this series include 12 in. vinyl LPs for “A Fine White Thread,” “Another Tumbleweed,” “Paul Hann,” “High Test” and “Hometown Hero.” It also includes 8-track cassettes of “A Fine White Thread,” “Another Tumbleweed,” and “Paul Hann.” This subseries also features commercially released compilation albums featuring Paull Hann, including “In the Dawning: A Story of Canada” on 12 in. vinyl as well as compact disc. It also includes “The ACME Sausage Company,” a compilation of CKUA radio featuring a performance by Paul Hann. Finally, this subseries includes the limited release compact disc “Acrid Smoke and Amber Drink: The Lost Songs of Pete White and Paul Hann 1968-1978.”
Subseries Two: Original Recordings and Digital Transfers includes various recordings made by White and Hann on ¼ in. audio tape as well as 2 in. audio tape. This includes registration demos for BMI, outtakes, unreleased singles, interim mixes, and master recordings of songs and albums. This also includes recordings made by Paul Hann and the band Canadian Club for CKUA radio. Finally, this subseries includes digital transfers of audio tapes to compact disc.
Subseries Three: Film and Television Soundtracks
This subseries includes recordings made by White and Hann for film and television soundtracks on ¼ in. audio tape. This includes compositions for “The Parent Puzzle,” “Faces of Yesterday: History of Schooling in Alberta”, “Prairie Years,” and “Come Alive.”
Subseries Four: Songs Lists, Lyrics, Chronologies includes records related to White’s songwriting and publishing career with Paul Hann. Records in this subseries include songs lists and publisher share information, music and lyrics, contracts, and correspondence.
Subseries Five: Business Affairs includes records related to the business and management side of White’s work with Paul Hann. Included in this subseries are correspondence, performance contracts, mechanical license agreements, songwriting and publishing agreements, recording contracts, original music service agreements and composers’ agreements, song registration forms, and royalties statements.
Subseries Six: Promo Materials and Photos includes records related to the promotional aspects of White’s work with Paul Hann. Included in this subseries are press kits, aggregated reviews, and promotional photographs.
Subseries Seven: Clippings and Ephemera includes newspaper and magazine clippings related to White and Hann’s music career, as well as festival and performance programmes. This subseries also includes copies of the book “The Game of Our Lives” by Peter Gzowski, which includes the lyrics to White and Hann’s song “Hometown Hero” in its preface.

Subseries Seven: Pitches includes records related to various pitches written by White. Records in this series include one-sheet pitches, story pitches, synopses, outlines, notes and research materials. Works in this series include, but are not limited to “Headless Valley,” “The Cheaters,” “Fall of a Prince,” and “Detachment.”
Subseries Eight: Screenwriting Projects Research Materials consists of records related to research done by White, predominantly pertaining to a potential series entitled “The Denisons of Canada.” Records in this subseries include grant applications, correspondence, a television series treatment, and a project description. It also includes a substantial amount of research materials, including books, book and journal excerpts, copies of historical records including maps, photographs, correspondence and diaries, archival finding aids, genealogical records, and bibliographies. Also included in this subseries are research files for a potential new instalment of “Peacekeepers,” set in Cyprus, in 1974, as well as research for a project entitled “Graveyard of the Pacific.”
Subseries Nine: Awards consists of awards and nominations received by White over the course of his screenwriting career. Included in this series are Gemini nomination certificates for “Striker’s Mountain,” “The Legend of the Ruby Silver,” and “Peacekeepers.” It also includes awards statuettes from the Writer’s Guild of Canada Top Ten Awards, for “Ruby Silver” and “Peacekeepers.”
Subseries Ten: Miscellaneous Files includes records labeled as miscellaneous by the creator, as well as records not easily ascribed to a particular title or production. Records in this series include correspondence, WGC project registrations for various titles, matted postcards, research clippings, a brochure for White’s production company (Kicking Horse Productions), writer’s contracts and purchase agreements, and a disc containing professional photographs of White.
Subseries Eleven: Books and Reference Materials consists of books related to White’s screenwriting career. Works in this series include “Telling It: Writing for Canadian Film and Television,” (which includes a chapter by White), and “Big Screen Country: Making Movies in Alberta.” It also includes two screenplays not written by White, a book about the Avro Arrow, and an Orenda Engines branded lighter.
Series Three: Digital Print Writing includes records related to White’s digital print writing work (including novels, novelizations, and memoirs). Included in this series is a copy of White’s novel, Crimea Sabre, as well as printing order details pertaining to this book. Also included in this series are research clippings pertaining to “Crimea Sabre.” This series also includes an essay by White about the founding of the Council of Canadians. This series also includes personal short stories, genealogical research records (including family trees, correspondence, copies of military service records, and scans of family photos), and a small amount of White’s personal materials (high school report cards, membership cards, track and field ribbons).
Series Four: Writer’s Guild of Canada includes records related to White’s work with the ACTRA Writer’s Guild as well as the Writer’s Guild of Canada, and the arrangement is largely based on the creator’s original order. Records in this series include correspondence, clippings, policy and discussion papers, policy proposals, lists of guild personnel and portfolios, meeting minutes and agendas, reports, forum and working group agendas, priorities and action items lists, speeches, and notes. It also includes a full run of “The WGC News” newsletter, as well as a run of “Canadian Screenwriter” magazines from White’s time as Guild president. Finally, this subseries includes a USB key of digital files relating to White’s time as WGC president.
Series Five: Kaslo/Kootenays and Mining includes records related to White’s time as a miner, resident of Kaslo, British Columbia, and work with the Kootenay Lake Historical Society. Records in this series include newspaper and magazine clippings and brochures pertaining to home design and home building. It also includes research and copies of archival materials pertaining to the history of mining in British Columbia. It also includes historical publications by the Geological Survey of Canada, and books pertaining to the Kootenays, including a first edition of the 1888 travelogue “A Ramble In British Columbia.”

This fonds was acquired in three separate accessions in 1986, 1987, and 1989. The fonds includes a collection of taped interviews and transcripts for a commemorative radio biography on the centenary of Albert Einstein’s birth (made between 1978 and 1979); two radio documentary programs, “Space Exploration” and “Eyes in the Sky” made between 1983 and 1985; and a two-part radio series for CBC’s Ideas, “Reflections in the Mind of the Machine” on the early history of artificial intelligence, made in 1987.

The 1986 Accession includes records related to the Albert Einstein commemoration. The accession includes 94 reel to reel audio tapes and 17 magnetic audio tapes containing relevant interviews, and one box containing typed transcripts for some of the interviews, and related textual materials.

The 1987 Accession is divided into 2 series based on subject matter. These are: ‘Space Exploration: The Dream and the Reality’, and ‘Eyes in the Sky’.

The First series, ‘Space Exploration: The Dream and the Reality’, includes 45 magnetic audio tapes and one magnetic audio reel to reel tape containing relevant interviews, and one box containing typed transcripts and notes on the interviews.

The Second series, ‘Eyes in the Sky’, includes 33 magnetic audio tapes and two magnetic audio reel to reel tapes containing relevant interviews, and one box containing typed transcripts and notes on the interviews.

The 1989 Accession includes records documenting the early history of artificial intelligence used in the preparation of the two-part CBC radio series ‘Reflections in the Mind of the Machine’. The accession includes 41 magnetic audio tapes containing relevant interviews, and one box containing descriptive notes and transcripts, and summaries of interviews with biographical notes about interviewees for all the interviews contained within the fonds.

The collection consists of papers and tapes (with transcriptions) relating to Pearce's book of interviews with twelve Canadian writers titled Twelve Voices (1980). It also includes tapes and transcripts with Milton Acorn for an article in Canadian Poetry.

This fonds is a very complete documentation of all aspects of Prof. Stoicheff career. His relationship with colleagues at the University, nationally and internationally is evident throughout but especially in the Series 1 Correspondence, Series 8 Professional Association and Activities, and Series 9 University of Toronto. Series 1 Correspondence also documents his mentoring role and his role as a referee and evaluator of peer and student work. This is also documented in Series 11 Teaching, Series 12 Correspondence with Students and Series 8 Professional Associations and Activities. His research activities are extensively documented not only in Series 6 Research but in Series 10 Ontario Laser and Lightwave Research Centre and in Series 3 Publications. Fonds documents Allan Irving’s activities from 1976 to 1998 as a doctoral candidate at the University of Toronto Faculty of Social Work; as lecturer and/or professor at King’s College (University of Western Ontario), at the Faculty of Social Work (University of Toronto), at the Nipissing College (Laurentian University) and Wilfrid Laurier University. It also partially documents his other professional and scholarly activities, publications and writings, lectures and addresses from 1978 to 1999.

Fonds consists of records of the Director, Dr. Thadeus Trenn, and the Administrative Assistant, Gordon Baker, and includes correspondence, reports, memoranda, notes, evaluations, lists, program material, financial and other records relating to the year’s activities, 1994-1999, which were primarily concerned with hosting annual Advanced Summer Workshops, 1996-1999; correspondence, notes, program material and other records relating to workshops attended by Dr. Trenn in Tallahassee, Florida, 1995-1999; correspondence, reports, lists, program material, memoranda and other records relating to a regional meeting, 1996-1998; and correspondence/subject files, 1995-1999, which include correspondence with various academics and Templeton Program administrators, and files re the closure of the Toronto connection to the Program.

Personal records of W. Harding le Riche, documenting his personal life in South Africa and Canada and his career as an epidemiologist, especially at the School of Hygiene and in the Department of Preventative Medicine at the University of Toronto.

The records include correspondence, diaries, scrapbooks, memorabilia, and photographs; drafts of articles, chapters of books and whole books, including le Riche’s Memoirs; addresses; course outlines, lecture notes and other teaching files; conference files; and reports derived from academic research and consulting work. There is also a set of LPs consisting of a recording by the South African Broadcasting Corporation of a 1966 lecture series by Raymond Dart, an eminent anthropologist who first described Australopithecus africannus.

This fonds contains Etienne Gilson's correspondence, articles, lectures and pocket diaries for the period 1927-1978. It also contains biographical material, copies of articles in journals, articles by others about Gillson, some reviews of his published works, memorabilia, and the notebooks of Abbe Andre Gilson, younger brother of Etienne. In addition there are photographs and audio cassettes.

Fonds consists of records created, accumulated, and used by Doug Riley between the years 1966-2007. The majority of the records in this fonds is sheet music resulting from collaborations with other musicians, arrangements by Doug Riley, or original compositions. Although the fonds consists largely of jazz music, there is a wide variety of genres including classical music represented. Audio recordings could prove useful in the understanding of Doug Riley's performances or musical techniques.

Throughout his career Doug Riley collaborated in a variety of projects including composing music for theatre, television, awards shows, and social events. The fonds includes evidence of these projects including scripts, itineraries, storyboards, etc.

Also included in the fonds is correspondence between Doug Riley and other prominent figures in the music industry. Many set lists included in the fonds could provide insights into the performances of Doug Riley.
