The University of St. Michael's College Photographs Collection features 1700 photographs. Included in the Collection are photographs of the St. Michael's College campus and buildings, staff and faculty, students, alumni, College events, and graduation composites featuring collected graduation portraits of graduating students. Some photographs depict University of Toronto events and buildings, other schools and organizations with a relationship with St. Michael's College, and photographs of events attended by the Basilian Fathers. Also included in the Collection are photo albums created by faculty and alumni, and photographs donated by alumni and former faculty.

Student Journals

This series consists of the various student journals, newsletters, and other types of literary collections published by the students of St. Michael’s College. Material includes newsletters: The Michael, Ennui, The Seraph, The Bike, Coop News, SMC Clips, SMC News, The Mik, Newsletter of Saint Michael’s College, S.M.U.T, and The Adversary. Material also includes literary collections of poetry, photography, short stories, and formal and informal essays: The Journal, Graffiti, Gryphon, Rune, Saeculum, The Trireme, and The Grammateion. Lastly, material includes The Toronto Handbook of Humour, which compiled interviews with and essays about Toronto’s key comedians and actors in the comedy industry, and the student newspaper, Forum.

This fonds contains essays, research, course material and ephemera belonging to Thomas Langan. The files contain six dominant themes including: essays and journal publications, materials from educational committees, course outlines and reference materials, research notes, correspondences and miscellaneous materials. Essays and journal publications include subjects such as: education, philosophy, Christianity, socialism, world events and identity. Course materials focused on philosophy, religion, world issues and technology. Correspondences are primarily focused on professional and academic contacts from other universities or journal publications.

These materials document Langan’s career as an active community member, an academic and a philosopher.

Correspondence

This series consists of materials related to the professional and personal correspondence that Dewart collected throughout his life in the form of typewritten letters, written letters, postcards, printed emails, and greeting cards. This includes recommendation letters that Dewart wrote on behalf of colleagues and students, internal correspondence and memos related to the University of Toronto, and personal letters from family in Cuba.

Fonds consists of records created and accumulated by Laurence Lynch throughout his studies and career as a scholar, professor, advisor, and principal at the University of St. Michael's College. His records consist of handwritten and typewritten drafts of essays and theses, including those of Lynch and his colleagues and students, on topics in Philosophy, History, Religion, and Psychology. His records also include copies of addresses and talks; teaching materials, including lecture notes, research notes, syllabi, and reading lists; pamphlets, calendars, and academic handbooks from St. Michael's College, the University of Toronto, and other North American universities; correspondence; materials relating to committees and organizations; files relating to grants; and administrative reports and notes.

The University of St. Michael's College is a University in its own right, as established by the USMC Act (2005) https://www.ontario.ca/laws/statute/pr05007. It is therefore governed by two bodies: the Collegium and the Senate. The Collegium governs the affairs of the University, including the safeguarding of the property and the funds of the University. Collegium was established by the University of St. Michael's College Act (1958). The Collegium fonds consists of records reflecting the business and activities of the Collegium governing body, including meeting minutes, reports, financial records and reports, hiring decisions, and property agreements.

Minutes from 1958-2007 are kept separate from the records of the Office of the President. Many records relating to the business of Collegium, as conducted by the President, are therefore part of the Office of the President fonds.

Minutes from 2007 onward, as well of records from Collegium business, have been kept within the records of the office of origin, the Office of the President. Minutes from 2007 onward are available digitally.

Visitor Lists

Sub-series consists of Father Donovan's handwritten lists recording the names and dates of various visitors to the Donovan Art Collection. One of the files also includes a list of artist names whose works appears in the collection.

Donovan Art Collection Account

Sub-series consists of documents relating to the Donovan Art Collection financial account. Documents include invoices and receipts regarding financial donations, art purchases, and other expenses of the Donovan Art Collection, as well as the account's closing and opening balances. Additionally, the sub-series also includes related correspondences between Father Donovan and the collection accounting team.

Art Loans

Series consists of documents relating to art loans of the Donovan Art Collection, including loan agreements, receipts, shipment notices, invoices, and more. Many loan agreements also include related correspondence from artwork borrowers.

Artist Reference Files

Series consists of collected texts pertaining to artists within the Donovan Art Collection. Texts include articles, CVs, interviews, and exhibition catalogues. Currently, the series only consists of artist Meryl McMaster's reference file.

This series consists of materials related to legal proceedings of professors O'Connell, Bilanuik, McSorley, and Dewart in filing a group grievance against the University of Toronto concerning the tenure of professors in the Faculties of Divinity and Theology. This includes correspondence, a report of the Grievance Review Panel, and legal documents used in the panel.

This series consists of materials related to a grievance that Dewart filed against the University of Toronto concerning the status and rights of professors emeriti. This Fonds contains works, correspondences, and ephemera belonging to and about Joseph O’Connell. The Fonds has six main categories of materials: Academic works written, edited or translated by Joseph O’Connell; biographical information; personal correspondence; internal documents for the Department for the Study of Religion at St. Michael’s College; Class; lecture and conference notes; and materials related to the Department of World Religions at Dhaka University. Materials date from 1964 to 2012 and document O’Connell’s academic career including materials from time he spent teaching at Oxford University and creating the Department for World Religions at Dhaka University.

Financial Accounts

This series consists of invoices and receipts regarding financial donations, art purchases, and other expenses of the Donovan Art Collection, as well as correspondences between Father Donovan and the art collection accounting team. Other documents within the series include opening and closing balances for both the Donovan Art Collection account and Endowment Fund account.

Catalogue Planning Material

Series consists of documents and correspondences related to the publication of the 2010 Donovan Art Collection catalogue. Documents include rough copies of catalogue essays, correspondences between Father Donovan and catalogue editors, and shipping addresses of artists. Additionally, the series also includes several invoices and receipts for costs of the book launch, copyright, and printing.

The 2010 catalogue is the most recent printed overview of the Donovan Art Collection. Father Donovan's essays describe the collection's beginnings, as well as the artworks' engagement with the St. Michael's College community.

This fonds contains the files of Edward Aloysius Synan, accumulated during his time as Chair of the Department of Philosophy at Seton Hall University, his time as professor of philosophy at the University of St. Michael's College and the University of Toronto, and his time as professor of mediaeval philosophy at the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies. His files also include materials from his time as President of the Pontifical Institute.

Synan, Edward A.

Acquisitions and Tax Receipts

Series consists of various documents relating to purchased acquisitions for the Donovan Art Collection. Documents include invoices and receipts for artwork purchases, and costs pertaining to the artworks' appraisal, framing, transportation, and installation. Additionally, the series also contains several certificates of authenticity and tax receipts.

Art Collection Lists

Series consists of typed and handwritten lists outlining various visitors to the Donovan Art Collection throughout the years, as well as an inventory of the Donovan Art Collection and the location of artworks on the St. Michael's College campus.

Artwork Lists

Sub-series consists of inventory lists of the Donovan Art Collection, which also include the locations of artwork on the St. Michael's College campus.

Endowment Fund

Sub-series consists of documents relating to the Donovan Art Collection Endowment Fund. Documents include receipts of financial donations to the fund, the account's closing and opening balances, as well as correspondences between Father Donovan and St. Michael's College accounting teams.

Stewardship Reports

Series consists of stewardship reports sent to Father Donovan from St. Michael's College. These reports outline Father Donovan's financial and artwork contributions to the St. Michael's College community, extending as far back as 1981.

Yearbooks

This series consists of the various configurations of yearbooks published by the students of St. Michael’s College. Titles include: The Year Book of St. Michael’s College (1910-1931; 1934-1935), The Thurible (1932-1933; 1937-1948; 1950), Through St. Michael's with the Camera (1940-1942; 1946-1948), Keystone (1968), Windrose (1969-1970; 1980; 1982-1985; 1987-1995), The Sword (1995-1999).

The Mike

This series consists of volumes of The Mike, the official student newspaper of the University of St. Michael’s College. The newspaper has been in operation since 1948 and has been published on a predominantly bi-weekly basis.

This series consists of copies of academic papers, essays, articles, reviews, lectures, and chapters that Dewart published or delivered at conferences as well as reviews published about Dewart’s books.

Etienne Gilson fonds

This fonds contains Etienne Gilson's correspondence, articles, lectures and pocket diaries for the period 1927-1978. It also contains biographical material, copies of articles in journals, articles by others about Gillson, some reviews of his published works, memorabilia, and the notebooks of Abbe Andre Gilson, younger brother of Etienne. In addition there are photographs and audio cassettes.

This fonds is currently incomplete. This fonds contains works, correspondence, and ephemera belonging to or addressed to Richard Alway. The fonds currently consists of 10 main series:

• Photographs: Miscellaneous personal and professional photographs that were transferred to the archive.
• Collected Publications: Consists of collected publications and promotional materials from art institutions or the University of Toronto.

o Professional: Includes correspondence relating to Alway's role as President of SMC.
o References: Consists of references written by Alway, largely on behalf of former students of SMC employees.
• Art Collection: Consists of materials relating to the acquisition, sale, and donation of artworks, mostly Canadian art.
• Speeches and Addresses: Consists of speeches and addresses given by Alway on various occasions including convocations, honourary degree conferrals, arts-related events, and University events. Series also includes scripts for many of Alway's CFRB talks.
• Writings: Includes academic writings and publications by Alway.
• Councils and Committees: Consists of materials relating to the many boards and committees on which Alway served, including: Heritage Trust, National Gallery of Canada, National Museums of Canada, Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada, and TCDSB Supervision.
• St. Michael’s College: Consists of research into the history of SMC, materials relating to the academic planning and funding at SMC, some personnel and administrative information, as well as Alway's own professional development while President.
• Academic Planning: Consists of academic planning materials not explicitly related to SMC or the Pontifical Institute. Includes materials related to the Toronto School of Theology, and the development of Catholic education in North America.

The fonds also contains a small amount of personal materials, largely related to the death of Alway’s father.
