Friedland 1st 2002 accession

Records compiled by Professor Martin Friedland in the researching and writing of his University of Toronto: A history (University of Toronto Press, 2002). Included are correspondence files, files on the structure of the project, research notes and material, drafts of the manuscript, correspondence relating to publication matters, addresses, photographs, audiotapes, books, pamphlets and other publications.

The records document how the project was conceived and carried out, including the evolution of the manuscript and discussions over the shaping of the book. One consequence was putting the footnotes on line, a first for the University of Toronto Press, and also issuing them in a separate hardcopy volume. The records document the major issues at the University and, by extension, in higher education in Ontario over more than 175 years. The research reports, correspondence from academics, university administrators and graduates from across North America, original material forwarded by individuals, and the commentaries by some sixty people who read the whole manuscript, together provide extra breadth and depth to this historical record of the University.

University of Toronto. Department of Pathology and Bacteriology

Contains introductory remarks to Dr. James Bovell's first lecture in Pathology at King's College, 1849.
Photographs include staff composites, ca. 1928-1936; portraits of William Brebner, William Hendry and Ronald Saddington who were University of Toronto graduates who died of a virus contracted while conducting research; the gathering of the American Association of Pathologists and Bacteriologists at the Royal York, 1934; portraits of staff members including William Lipsett Robinson and William Lindlow Holman.

Bissell 1st 1984 accession

Personal records of Claude Bissell, consisting of correspondence, lecture notes, addresses, manuscripts, pamphlets, press clippings, postcards and photographs documenting his career as a professor of English, president of the University of Toronto, and a writer. His private correspondents include J. B. Bickersteth, Earle Birney, E. K. Brown, Morley Callaghan, Robertson Davies, Marshall McLuhan and Elsie May Pomeroy. «

Bissell 1988 accession

31 volumes of diaries and journals of Claude Thomas Bissell, covering the period from his third year as an undergraduate at the University of Toronto to the end of his presidency of the same university. No diary was kept for the period June, 1943 to August, 1945, during his military service during World War II with the Army in England and Northwest Europe. There are also no diaries for the years 1963-1965 in this accession.

Bissell 1993 accession

Correspondence, course notes, lecture notes, scrapbook, notes, manuscripts, articles, programs, photoprints, posters, and press clippings documenting the career of Claude Bissell as a student, a professor of English literature, and as an administrator, especially in his capacity as president of Carleton College (Ottawa) and the University of Toronto.

University of Toronto. Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics

Contains correspondence, work diaries, nightly observing summaries, Time Application Committee files, and project files for the Las Campanas Observatory, the Canadian Telescope in Chile. Also included are two drawings of the Las Campanas buildings - one of the dome and the other of Casa Canadiense, the residence.

University of Toronto. Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics

Contains scanned copies of photographs document the department of Astronomy and in particular the David Dunlap Observatory and Las Campanas telescope in Chili. Includes early views of the David Dunlap Observatory and grounds, memorabilia such as clippings regarding its opening, as well as photographs of telescopes and related instruments. There are also photographs of the University of Toronto Telescope in Chili and early photographs of DDO staff. (Files are jpg format, colour and black and white with a resolution of 200 ppi, print size approx. 3”x4”).
Also included in this accession are three electronic copies of the Index to the David Dunlap Doings, the departmental newsletter.

Contains pproximately 400 lantern slides from the Department of Biology, assembled primarily by Professors Benjamin Arthur Bensley and Archibald Gowanlock Huntsman. The images are of zoological specimens, scientists, and places, including the Atlantic Biological Station in St. Andrew's, New Brunswick.

Cinader 1st 1983 accession

Records of Dr. Cinader's visit to the USSR, 1975; the 4th European Immunology Meeting in Budapest, 1978; the Workshop on the Immunogenetics of the Rabbit, Bethesda, Maryland, 1978; and the 19th Symposium on Biological Models, Brno, Czechoslovakia, 1980.

Cinader 2nd 1983 accession

Correspondence, minutes, notes, programs, conference proceedings, and publications documenting Dr. Cinader's involvement with World Health Organization task forces and research centres relating to immunology and with the Canadian federation of Biological Sciences.

Cinader 1989 accession

Correspondence files entitled "The growth of immunology in Toronto--scientific linkages", including Dr. Cinader's contribution to Pauline Mazumdar's book on the history of immunology; also files on the 6th International Congress of Immunology held in Toronto in 1986.
