Tripe Family Papers

This accession of the Tripe Family Papers includes correspondence, documents, photographs, and genealogical materials relating to descendants of Emily (Tripe) James 1817-1850, as well as photographs, documents and heraldry material pertaining to both ancestors and descendants of Emily's brother Alfred Tripe 1818-1854. Correspondence, written in England, Hawaii, and mainland America, relates to Emily's grandchildren, specifically William Francis James (1861-1944), Caroline Laura James (1861-1941) and Emma Polglase (James) Stevens Edwardes (1867-1958), and their mother Caroline Sophia (Beaumont) James (1842-1927) as well as the descendants of William Francis James, particularly Francis Leicester James (1888-1977). The letters describe several visits by family members to others in England and Hawaii, as well as ongoing correspondence between the James family in Hawaii, England, and India. Of note, are descriptions and observations of travel through mainland America, a first-hand account of the 1911 Delhi Durbar, discussions of the First and Second World Wars, and the fate of an oil portrait of James James (1800) by John Opie. James family documents include rare postcards of India from 1905-1913, the majority acquired and distributed to family members by Edith (James) Storrs (1873-1940). Xerox copies in this accession of two manuscripts written by William Francis James on his experiences immigrating to the United States in the 1880s, his service with Roosevelt’s Rough Riders in Cuba during the Spanish-American War, and subsequent service as an Assistant Surgeon in the Philippines 1899-1903 can be compared with his original letters about these experiences in Tripe Family Papers 2016 (MS Coll 00050A). There is also a typescript manuscript written by William Francis James’ daughter, Naomi (James) Hart (1898-2001) on the James’ family experience of immigrating to Hawaii. Photographs depict descendants of the James family taken by Janet Dewan on trips to England and Hawaii in the 1970s and 1980s, as well as original historical photographs of James descendants taken in 1916 and 1929, and copies of historical James photographs made by Janet Dewan in 1985. Tripe material in this collection includes the metal seal bearing the crest and motto of Cornelius Tripe (1785-1860) and a wax rubbing made of the monumental inscription to William Tripe (died 1681) and Margaret his wife (died 1690) in the Parish church of All Saints, Kenton, Devon. Also included is material related to the military service of Alfred King Tripe (1887-1917), and Philip Valentine King Tripe (1918-1982), as well as five draft typescripts of memories, typed and hand-corrected by Marian F.K (Tripe) Ade (1915-2010), regarding family history, immigration, and military involvement.

Joe Rosenblatt Papers

A collection of manuscripts and artworks. Manuscripts include drafts of Beds and Consenting Dreamers, and A Tentacled Mother, proofs of The Voluptuous Gardener, drafts of Italian translations of Rosenblatt's works, personal and business correspondence, and inscribed copies of books 1994-1998. Correspondence

Series consists of various correspondences received by Father Donovan between 1990 and 2020, largely pertaining to the Donovan Art Collection. Correspondences include cards, printed emails, and notes sent from students, St. Michael's College faculty, collection visitors, artists, curators, and more. Some files include photographs and other printed material sent to Father Donovan as enclosures, as well as texts created by Father Donovan for different art events and lectures. In some instances, a copy of Father Donovan's typed response is also included in the file.

Derek Walcott Papers

The collection contains literary papers relating to Walcott's poetic, theatrical and prose writings from the early 1980s to the mid-1990s. Holograph notes, rough drafts and revisions are included, as well as final drafts and galleys of publications. Many drafts are the result of a 'cut-and-paste' method using a variety of formats. These are referred to as "composite drafts" throughout. Many works, both poetic and theatrical, also include screen adaptations.

There is a small collection of material relating to Walcott's role as stage director, particularly with the Trinidad Theatre Workshop. The literary papers are complemented by sketches and watercolours by Walcott, often in the form of stage directions or film storyboards.

This collection consists primarily of material related to the production of Descant, the literary journal edited by Karen Mulhallen, as well as some of Mulhallen's personal papers. The Descant papers include original manuscripts, correspondence, copy edits, typeset galleys and office administration files.

Frances Dafoe Papers

Collection includes original colour sketches of costume designs for shows designed by Frances Dafoe: 1. West Side Story for Banff Festival of the Arts, 1984. '27 mounted and 4 rough. Also included - copy of the playbill, the script and photostats with instructions to the cutters' 2. Kiss Me Kate for Banff Festival of the Arts, 1985. '27 colour mounted plus 18 black and white for a special scene using only black and white copies of the original sketches. There are also 7 quick colour drawings for tights.' 3. Leon Katz Momento Books

A collection of David Young's correspondence, literary manuscripts, business papers, and ephemera. Correspondence includes both business and personal matters from the late 1960s to 1995. The literary papers include multiple drafts and the galleys for his novels Incognito and Agent Provocateur, the notes and drafts for some of his most successful dramatic works, among them Fire, and Glenn, and many TV scripts. Also included are several of his adaptations of works by other authors for radio, such as Carol Shield's Swann, and Michael Ondaatje's In the Skin of a Lion and The English Patient. Drafts of works by other authors edited by Young and his own manuscripts edited by others, including Michael Ondaatje, are also included. The business papers relate to The Writer's Union of Canada, The Writers' Trust, The For/Words Foundation, Coach House Press and The Baffin Island Project. The ephemera documents the Toronto arts scene.

Maureen Scott Harris Papers

This accession of Maureen Scott Harris’ papers includes a significant amount of personal correspondence from the 1960s to the present, along with professional correspondence, mainly from 2015. It also contains materials relating to the Renga 10 collaborative poetry project, and to the Abundance chapbook and event, in addition to a number of periodicals in which Scott Harris’ poetry has been published. Frances Dafoe Papers

Includes a complete record of the career of Frances Dafoe as a costume designer for a wide variety of projects. Includes full colour drawings, photographs, slides and rough sketches for many CBC television programs(1950s-1990s), including ‘Juliette’, ‘Tommy Ambrose Show’, ‘Front Page Challenge’, ‘The Tommy Hunter Show’, ‘Brenda Lee’, ‘One of a Kind’ – with Rita Allen Greer and Kathie McNeil, ‘Holiday Ranch’, ‘Tom Jones’, ‘Stars on Ice’, ‘The Rene Simard Show’, 1980 Genie Awards, ‘I’ll Never Get to Heaven’, and ‘Back to the Beanstalk’. Most are original full colour drawings with fabric samples and notions attached, and colour photographs of the finished design in many cases. Dafoe’s costume design has been nominated for Gemini Awards many times. Dafoe designed costumes for the Closing Ceremonies of the Calgary Olympics in 1988; various theatre productions—especially for The Charlottetown Festival; various commercial designs, including for 1960s General Motors Automobile shows and Eaton’s wedding dresses; some project-related correspondence; videotapes; posters; and other material related to her life and work. Frances Dafoe’s uncle, Dr. Allan Roy Dafoe delivered the Dionne Quintuplets with telephone assistance from Dafoe’s father, Toronto physician Dr. William A. Dafoe.

Karen Mulhallen Papers

Collection consists of editorial material - including manuscripts, page proofs and correspondence - for issues of the Mulhallen-edited literary journal Descant (nos. 133-136), as well as manuscripts and other materials of Mulhallen's own literary output. It includes a Renga Talk written in collaboration with artist Virgil Burnett, and material related to her book Sea Horses (Black Moss Press, 2007). The remainder of the collection is research and lecture notes, both for courses taken by Mulhallen when she was a student at the University of Toronto and for her own lectures at Ryerson University, as well as other personal and miscellaneous materials.
