Sub-series also consists of official papers kept for legal, insurance and professional reasons, including immigration papers, personal identification cards, wills, and royalties.

Materials regarding Seward Hiltner

Sub-series consists of articles and materials collected by Nouwen on Seward Hiltner. Materials were likely collected while Nouwen was at Notre Dame University and at Yale Divinity School. The material was likely collected for use in courses that Nouwen was teaching from 1967 to 1975 at Notre Dame, the Joint Pastoral Institute in Amsterdam, Catholic Theological Institute of Utrecht, and Yale. The courses were on the topic of Pastoral Care. The material might also have informed Nouwen's Theology degree, but this needs more research. In a letter in the file titled "Nouwen correspondence regarding Hiltner material" Nouwen writes, "I am presently involved in research concerning Seward Hiltner, and am trying to collect as many of his writings as possible."
Seward Hiltner (1909 - 1984) was an American Presbyterian minister who lived his life and work focused on the interface between psychology and theology. He believed that the two disciplines are vital to each other and that together they were a decisive force in shaping pastoral care and counseling. In addition to many other positions, Hiltner was the theological consultant for the Menninger Clinic as well as executive secretary for the Council of Clinical Training of Theological Students (founded by Boisen in 1930).

This sub-series contains only those articles written by Nouwen which he collected and does not contain all of his published articles as is evident by several incomplete article series.
The files are arranged chronologically. Each file features one unique published article although photocopies of newspapers as well as business cards and letters indicating the source of the articles are also included. Each file/article has been described at the item level.

Sub-series consists of materials created by Nouwen, possibly in preparation for his doctoral degree in Theology. Sub-series contains two copies of Nouwen's diary from January 5 to February 21, 1966, during which time he visited several universities in the United States. Books by Nouwen

Sub-series consists of hard and soft cover books or booklets written by Nouwen or containing Nouwen's words, published between 1969 and 1996. The Archives has a variety of editions, printings and translations of his books. It is not certain how Nouwen obtained most of the English versions since, other than a handful of presentation copies, few were personally inscribed to him. Although it may be presumed that some were publisher gifts, since many of the books still have their price tags, it is possible that they were purchased by Nouwen or his associates.

Articles co-authored by Nouwen

Sub-series consists of published articles co-written by Nouwen between 1970 and 1986. The articles are in various formats including entire periodicals, offprints, newsletters, clippings and photocopies. Specific books excerpted include Intimacy, Aging, and Compassion.

Theology degree records

Sub-series consists of materials related to Nouwen’s time pursuing his doctoral (doctoraal) degree in Theology at Nijmegen University. It appears as though Nouwen received the degree conferred upon completion of the doctoral exams although his thesis was not accepted. Note of December 18, 2013: file 319 unequivocally suggests that Nouwen pursued a degree in psychology (or to be precise in the Social Sciences) in early 1971. See also file 329, box 290 which contains a more elaborate outline of the thesis in question.

Collected articles

Sub-series consists of more than 70 articles collected by Nouwen for his research, writing, speeches, as reference for his duties as pastor, and for general interest. The sub-series consists of newspaper, magazine and journal articles as well as copied chapters from books and three manuscripts.
It is not known the exact purpose or reason these articles were kept, therefore, the archivist has arranged the sub-series in alphabetical order by title of the article. The articles in this series were likely collected and kept by Nouwen. There are other articles in 1.8.13. Henri Nouwen fonds - Administrative resources files. There are three files with a collection of articles (14081, 14082, 14083). These articles were likely given to Nouwen and so were filed with resources when they came in with letters.

  • Subseries
  • 1972 - 1996, predominant 1981 - 1996
  • Part of Henri Nouwen fonds

Sub-series consists of published articles as well as bookstore advertising, and transcripts of radio reviews regarding Nouwen's books, audio cassettes, and booklets. Also included are book reviews mentioning Nouwen's forewords and a book of which Nouwen was a contributing author. The articles are in various formats including entire publications, clippings, and photocopies as originally saved by Nouwen. This sub-series contains only those articles which Nouwen or his office collected.
In an attempt to re-establish a system similar to that originated by Nouwen, the Archives created one file to represent each reviewed book, etc., combining the various translations for a single book in the single file. On occasion, articles were photocopied by the Archives staff should more than one of Nouwen's books be mentioned; the copies were distributed to the appropriate book review files.

Ave Maria Press files

Sub-series consists of five files which deal with Nouwen's personal and professional dealings with Ave Maria Press, a publishing company located in Notre Dame, Indiana. Nouwen Archives and Research Collection.

Henri Nouwen Literary Centre correspondence files

Subseries consists of correspondence files kept by staff at the Henri Nouwen Literary Centre (HNLC) as part of the management of Nouwen’s estate and the business of the HNLC. The files were predominantly created during the four years following Nouwen’s death, prior to the establishment of the Henri Nouwen Literary Trust and the incorporation of the Canadian branch of the Henri Nouwen Society. Due to the overlapping administrative support of the Henri Nouwen Literary Centre and the American branch of the Henri Nouwen Society, as well Sue Mosteller’s continued role with various L’Arche communities, records pertaining to the operation of these entities are not uncommon. Often accompanying the correspondence is reference material in the form of agreements, articles, brochures, reports, proposals, newsletters and biographical sketches. Files containing personal correspondence sent to Nouwen and presumably used as reference material by the staff of the Henri Nouwen Literary Centre appear throughout the series. In several instances business or personal correspondence that took place after Nouwen’s death between the contact and, most often, Mosteller or Kathy Christie also appear in these files.

Topics in this series include: planning and research regarding the management of Nouwen’s legacy and estate; the mission, goals and incorporation of the Henri Nouwen Society; the relocation and development of the Nouwen Archives; the publication of Nouwen’s unpublished and revised published works; the translation and use of Nouwen’s work and the associated royalties and copyright restrictions; the writing and publication of Nouwen related books by authors including Beth Porter, Michael Ford, Tim Jones, Deidre LaNoue and Michael O’Laughlin; Nouwen focused retreats, workshops, lectures, courses and memorials; the production of Nouwen related audio and visual projects; the design and launch of Nouwen related newsletters and websites; the funding and functions of the Henri Nouwen Stichting; responses to and reviews of Nouwen’s writing; Nouwen’s influence on Hillary Clinton; the operations of the Thomas Merton Center; and Nouwen’s appearance on Hour of Power at the Crystal Cathedral.

Books contributed to by Nouwen

Sub-series consists of books written between 1974 and 1996 of which Nouwen co-authored, contributed a chapter, provided excerpts from his previously published works, or was interviewed. As well, Nouwen also provided introductions, forewords, prefaces, and recommendations to many books also included in this subseries. In addition to the books are photocopies of Nouwen's contributions to two other books not owned by the Archives. Paper notes and inscriptions within the books suggest that many of the books were given to Nouwen from the authors or publishers.
