Bata Shoe Company Papers

Contains VHS, Beta U-Matic cassette tapes; 8mm, 16mm and 35mm film reels and audio cassette tapes. The content of the recordings ranges widely and includes: recordings of speeches and conferences; media interviews and news spotlights featuring the company, Thomas J. Bata and/or Sonja Bata; Bata company promotional videos (including commercials and advertising spots); company-related historical highlights (complied by Bata employees); and HR and Technical department training videos, among other subjects.

This accession consists of photographs and videos documenting the faculty, staff and several events held at the Department of Zoology. Sound recordings consist mainly of recorded lectures from BIO 110. There are also four boxes of administrative files documenting mainly external reviews, planning committees and various reports.

Video cassettes (3/4" format) used by the Human Resources Department to orient new staff. Included are : "Campus Tour" 1977, "Welcome to New Staff" from variou Presidents, "This is the University of Toronto" 1980. There are also a number of videos that show role playing during various workshops including "Developing Supervisory Skills" and "The Media and You".

Skilling 2001 accession

Records documenting the history of the family of Harold Gordon Skilling, including his father, William Watt Skilling; his uncle, Ernest John Skilling; his brothers, William John, Andrew Douglas and Edward Donald; and his wife, Sara (Sally) Bright Skilling.

Sous-fonds I: Skilling family. The emphasis is on William Watt, a shoemaker who emigrated from England to Canada in 1907; on Ernest, who was a very active member of the Ancient Arabic Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine; on Donald, who was killed in action during World War I, and on his brother, William, who was wounded but survived.

Sous-fonds II: Sara (Sally) Bright Skilling. The records focus on Sally’s education in the United States, her travels with Gordon in Eastern Europe in the 1960s, and on her love of entertaining. They document the crucial support, intellectual and otherwise, that she provided to Gordon as he pursued his career.

Sous-fonds III: Harold Gordon Skilling. The documentation here is primarily on Gordon’s education and early career and his later years as an expert on Russian and East European politics and on Czechoslovakia, in particular. An extensive combination of correspondence, journals, lectures, writings and photographs reveal much about Skilling’s ideas and his relationships with the principal figures in recent Czech history.

The material in this collection is primarily news reels and other material relating to events of the day. There are radio dramas from WWII, and the photographs are also taken from news material primarily. This acquisition is divided into five series:

Bulman, Alan

Howarth 1996, 1997 and 2000 accessions

Records of Thomas Howarth, relating primarily to his activities as an architecture student at the University of Manchester, and as a professor and administrator there and at the Universities of Glasgow and Toronto, as a professional architect, and as an authority on Charles Rennie Macintosh. Included are correspondence, notes, minutes, course and lecture notes from the British universities; course material, student assignments, term projects, class reports, and theses for the Department/School/Faculty of Architecture in the University of Toronto; files on conferences, seminars, professional and other organizations of interest to Dr. Howarth; sketches for and other material relating to the building of Laurentian University and York University (including Glendon College); records of the University of Toronto Architecture Club (1919-1929, 1943-1948); drawings, plans, photographs, glass-plate negatives, slides, posters, audiotapes, film, and printing blocks.

This accession contains one small copy print of the Engineering Society Executive from 1898-99; video tape recordings of the Engineering Alumni and Awards Ceremonies for the years 1989, 1993, 1995-1997; one tape of engineering student production, Skule Nite, for the year 1996. There is also 1 film clip (34 secs) promoting the Engineering Open House, dated in the late 1970s.

Art Museum at the University of Toronto

This accession consists of administrative records of the Art Museum at the University of Toronto and the galleries comprised within: the Justina M. Barnicke gallery and the University of Toronto Art Centre (UTAC). Records consist of exhibition materials including curatorial research, correspondence, grant applications, proposals, budgets, loan agreements, installation guides, lists of works, didactic labels, press materials, invitations, exhibition texts and catalogues, and condition and conservation reports. Records also include facilities reports, building plans, a selection of historical records from University College, ephemera, administrative records of work-study and volunteer programs, collection management files, event and lecture records, and board meeting minutes.

Friedland 2nd 2002 accession

Personal records of Martin L. Friedland, Professor and former Dean of Law, consisting of personal and professional correspondence, certificates, memoranda, notes, briefs, reports, and drafts of publications relating to his administrative and other activities in the Faculty of Law and other divisions at the University of Toronto, various legal organizations, his work as a consultant, and his writings.

The publications documented in depth are a comparison of jury selection in Canada and the United States, judicial independence in Canada, and the eighth edition of his casebook on criminal law. Dr. Friedland’s work as a consultant includes studies for the federal Somalia enquiry, the Criminal Justice Review Committee and the Office of the Attorney General of Ontario, and projects for other provincial and territorial governments. Other files document his activities as a member of the Board and Manuscript Review Committee of the University of Toronto Press, and a number of other organizations including the Canada-China Senior Judges Training program, the Osgoode Society, the Royal Society of Canada. Included are photographs and a video.

Pimlott 1978 accession

Correspondence, memoranda, reports, field notes, publications, brochures, maps and films relating to Douglas Pimlott's career as zoologist and professor at the University of Toronto. The records relate to provincial commissions and committees (Newfoundland and Ontario) of which he was a member, and includes files on areas of his major research interest: the environment (oil, pollution, Alaska pipeline, pesticides), water policy, provincial resources, and northern development. The field notes are from his study of the moose population in Newfoundland.

A collection representing film, television, and radio from across many eras in each media. With a focus on the Golden Age of Radio and the American film industry’s early years if the 1930’s and 1940’s the collection captures what early mass entertainment looked like. University of Toronto. Faculty of Physical Education and Health

A2004-0020 represents a large accession of material from the Faculty of Physical Education and Health. The vast majority of the records in this accession are from co-curricular activities carried out by the Faculty. While not physically arranged according to function or subject, the records have been intellectually arranged according to their function as a curricular or co-curricular process, identified further by the specific activity they represent. The first series, entitled Faculty Administration, contains curricular materials which include admission files, records on faculty positions and Faculty Council/SPHE materials. Co-curricular series include; Intramurals, which contains both men's and women's intramural records; Intercollegiate Athletics, which holds records from all men's and women's Varsity sports teams; Facilities, Events and Athletics and Recreation Programs, which includes records for the management of the University's sports stadiums, fields, and arenas; and a series for Alumni, which contains a large amount of records on fundraising and awards. Finally, the Graphic Material series contains photographs and negatives of students, student identification cards and faculty and sporting events. Finally, there are approximately 250 videos of football games (1981-2000).

University of Toronto. Faculty of Physical Education and Health

Eighteen binders of slides, photographs, contact sheets document men's and women's intramural and intercollegiate sports from 1979-1986. Approx. 50 team portraits document the Varsity Hockey and Football teams through the 1950s and early 1960s. Also included are a few portraits of early Varsity teams from the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s.
Also includes three films that were used as teaching tools in the Faculty as well as a copy the NFB film Runner, a documentary on Canadian runner Bruce Kidd.

Halpenny 2000 accession

This accession documents Francess Halpenny’s activities as a student ; with the Women’s Division of the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II ; with amateur theatre groups ; as editor of the University of Toronto Press and the Dictionary of Canadian Biography ; as dean of the University of Toronto Faculty of Library and Information Science ; and as member of numerous academic and professional groups. It also documents Dr. Halpenny’s involvement in promoting social sciences and humanities generally and Canadian Studies in particular ; the honours and awards received throughout her career.

Royal Conservatory of Music

Consists of RC Quarterly Reviews and Monthly Bulletins, ca. 1927 - 1979. Also included are approximately 50 photographs of various RCM concerts and 1 video-cassette of an RCM opera production, 1970.

Rappaport 1992 accession

Photoprints, illustrations, slides, film and video documenting Professor Rappaport's expertise on diseases of the liver. Most were used for teaching and lectures; some of the graphic records were used in publications. Also included in this accession are some biographical files, addresses and publications.

2008.015 accrual

Accession 2008.015 consists of five series (determined by format), ranging between 1928 and 2005.
These are: Scrapbooks; Appointment Books; Textual Documents; Photographs; and VHS Videotapes.

The first series, Scrapbooks, consists of four oversized, handcrafted scrapbooks likely assembled by Susan Douglas. These scrapbooks document Rubeš’ European opera career, Rubeš’ North American career, Douglas’ career, and their family life.

The second series, Appointment Books, covers the period between 1955 and 2005. These include personal appointment diaries and day timers, as well as a ledger.

The third series, Textual Documents, was largely assembled by the Rubeš’ son, Tony. These files cover the period between 1928 and 2005 and include press clippings, reviews, personal correspondence, mementos, resumes, and biographies.

The fourth series, Photographs, consists of numerous publicity shots, production stills and photographs from 1940 – 2002. The subjects include fellow cast members, colleagues, and family members.

The fifth series, VHS Videotapes, includes several of Rubeš’ performances from the 1950s to 2005. These guest roles in movies and selected television productions characterize the sort of roles that Rubeš played later in his career.

Predominantly consists of records from the Faculty of Education (FEUT) and OISE created prior to the merger in 1996. FEUT records include the records of various FEUT committees such as the Executive Committee (1986-1992), Advisory Board (1968-1995), Faculty Council (1973-1999), Program Development Subcommittee (1974-1995), and the FEUT/OISE Joint Council on Education (1982-1989). Also included are records pertaining to the Institute of Child Study (1979-2000) and to various FEUT centres. OISE records predominantly consist of those of the OISE Board of Governors and Executive Committee (1991-1996). There are also FEUT/OISE merger records for various committees and task forces. This fonds is divided into 5 series, divided by format. These are: Cinefilm, Video Materials, Audio Materials, Photographic Materials, Textual Records.

The first series, Cinefilm, contains original prints in both b&w and colour. It includes home movies, newsreels, as well as Spiess’s debut film Die Thomaner.

The second series, Video Materials, contains Digital Betacam cassettes. These include transfers of commercials, home movies, and Die Thomaner.

The third series, Audio Materials, includes soundtrack elements and radio commercials.

The fourth series, Photographic Materials includes behind the scenes photos of commercial shoots, family portraits, and glass negatives by Spiess’s father, Karl.

The fifth series, Textual Materials, includes papers relating to the formation of the first accrual of the Fritz Spiess archive. It also includes several periodicals that featured work by Spiess and technical literature about technologies of the day.

2015 Accrual

Shimizu’s home movies document multiple stages of his life, and the lives of Japanese Canadians during and around WWII. Titles with dates before WWII document Shimizu’s life and events at the Church in Vancouver. They also capture daily life and vacations as Shimizu traveled south through the west coast of the United States, reaching Mexico. During the war, his films are some of the few moving image documents of the Japanese Canadian internment camps. He also filmed some of his talks and meetings he had with other Japanese Canadians when he traveled east for the CCJC. After the war, his films capture typical family life after relocating in Toronto.
The collection also includes six reels of cartoons and shorts for consumer viewing.

The collection consists of material created during and for Thompson’s career. The material reflects his professional skills, can capture stages from across his time on radio and as a sound producer. Material from 104.5 CHUM, 1050 CHUM, audio recordings from various Juno Awards, audio from interviews with celebrities, CHUM Chart pamphlets, audio recordings of CHUM DJs announcing community events, CHUM jingles, Audio recordings of the program Evolution of Rock, commercial work, video DVD’s of HiFi Salutes, audio for the Music Express Radio Show, the Rock Express Show, Rock 30, and The Producers. The material is in a variety of formats including vinyl records, ¼” audio reels, CDs and other formats.

Thompson, Doug

Glass 1994 accession

Biographical files, correspondence, course notes, lecture notes, research files, addresses, manuscripts and publications, photographs and slides, audio tapes and film documenting the career of Irvine Glass as a specialist in shock waves and a professor and administrator at the Institute for Aerospace Studies. There are extensive files on his research interests (including the American space program), professional associations and conferences, sabbatical leaves and trips, and on his personal involvement in Jewish issues through the Canada-Israel Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Canadian Professors for Peace in the Middle East, and the Committee of Concerned Scientists.

Anyone researching Dr. Glass' career will find the several versions of his curriculum vitae in box 001, file 01 useful in gaining an overall view of his career and in determining what he regarded as significant at various stages in it.

Includes drafts, research, correspondence and other material related to The Book of Negroes, including the screenplay for the televised series and the illustrated edition; interviews for Black Berry, Sweet Juice; notes, drafts, proofs, copy-editing and other material for The Illegal (early title ‘Underground’) forthcoming novel Fall 2015 (fourth novel and tenth book); personal and professional correspondence; appearances; extended family material; awards; photographs; notebooks; community activities; short pieces, including ‘Africville Forever’; Karen Hill’s Café Babanussa; research, various drafts, proofs and appearance material related to The Massey lectures: Blood: the Stuff of Life; The Deserter’s Tale; and other material related to the life, work and family of Lawrence Hill.

This fonds includes six series, divided by format. These are: Textual Material, Photographic Material, Audio Material, Video Material, Cinefilm/Cinex, and Artifacts.

The first series, Textual Material, is chiefly made up of scripts, storyboards, production files, research files, correspondence, meeting notes, equipment files, technical drawings, bylaws, cast/crew lists, contracts and proposals.

The second series, Photographic Material, represents all periods of Spiess’ career, from his early portraiture and fine art images to his industrial/commercial work to production stills documenting his cinematographic work. This series is divided into two subseries: PH.1239 & PH.610977 and PH.240609.

The third series, Audio Material, includes soundtrack production elements and music.

The fourth series, Video Material, includes high quality dubs of the various versions of the finished commercial productions, as well as production elements for those commercials shot on video.

The fifth series, Cinefilms/Cinex, includes finished release prints of the various commercials as well as a number of short films by Spiess.

The sixth series, Artifacts, consists of examples of the tools that Spiess used to teach his students, as well as mementos of his involvement with the CSC.

This fonds includes 1,635 examples of Spiess’ commercials with most of the major local

Skilling 1988 accession

Records documenting Skilling's expertise relating to East European studies with particular emphasis on Czechoslovakia and his role in the the Centre for Russian and East European Studies. Contains addresses and speeches; manuscripts and publications including related correspondence and reviews (books included are "Czechoslovakia's Interruped Revolution", "Charter 77 and Human Rights in Czechoslovakia", and "The Czech Renaissance in the Nineteenth Century"); lecture notes; subject files, mainly of associations; sound recording, video and photographs; University of Toronto administrative files including the Centre for Russian and East European Studies, the Department of Polical Economy, Committee on International Studies as well as the Centre for International Studies.

Ham 2002 accession

Records in this accession relate to several series established in B1997-0010, and include personal correspondence, clippings, memorabilia, notebooks and scrapbooks. Also includes many diplomas and honours, artifacts, slides and photographs. Of particular note is documentation relating to J.M. Ham's trip to India as a representative to the World University Services in 1953 as well as personal correspondence with family while a student at MIT in 1946-47.

Dave and Dale Cox (Third Accrual)

This accrual consists of four series, based on a listing provided by the creator. The series are as follows:

  3. Animation Cels and Drawings
  4. Animation Storyboards and Designs
    The first series, Animation Books and Periodicals, consists of the Coxes’ personal collection of books and magazines about the art of animation. This series also contains books and graphic novels based on Nelvana animated television programs - in particular, “Rock and Rule,” the “Franklin” series, and “Inspector Gadget.”
    The second series, Animation Memorabilia, consists of memorabilia collected by the Coxes related to animation, including commemorative programs and publications, brochures, a tote bag, “Babar” merchandise, an animation kit, original animation drawings from “The Pink Panther,” and several hand-cut, 3-D cartoon caricatures. This series also includes film reels and a DVD featuring some of Dave Coxes’ earliest animation work, from his time as a student at Sheridan College to animation shorts for “Sesame Street.”
    The third series, Animation Cels and Drawings, consists of original production animation cels and original production drawings from several Nelvana series and programs worked on by the Coxes, including “Cosmic Christmas,” “Intergalactic Thanksgiving,” “My Pet Monster,” “Ewoks,” “Rupert,” “Beetlejuice,” “Rome-0 and Julie-8,” “The Pink Panther,” and “Strawberry Shortcake.” This series also includes an animation cel from an animated Christmas card by Dave and Dale Cox.
    The fourth series, Animation Storyboards and Designs, consists of original storyboards and character designs created by Dave Cox, as well as copies of storyboards. Highlights include storyboards for “The New Quiz Kids,” for VideoArt Productions, as well as storyboards for several animated commercial and public service announcements. Finally, the series also includes storyboards, story ideas, and concept sketches for animated shorts and series by Dave Cox.

The collection consists primarily of audio and video recordings done by McClement of musical acts, interviews, and shows. Artists include Nelly Furtado, Shaggy, Neil Young, Rita MacNeil, Ringo Star, The Tragically Hip, David Bowie, Juno Award shows, and many many others.

There is also a large collection of magazines, including The Rolling Stones (1969-1982), Mix (1980-2011), Professional Sound (1992-2017), Studio Sound (1985-1994), Recording Engineer Producer (1976-1992), Tape Op (2005-2009), Kingston Whig-Standard (1959-2006), Cinema Canada (1982), Canadian Musician (2015-2017), and T.O. This accession of Maureen Scott Harris’ papers include materials relating to writing and literary projects (undertaken by the author individually or with collaborators); drafts and proofs for the Fieldnotes Chapbooks series; a significant amount of correspondence with specific individuals (Lynda Lange, Norma Lundberg, Barry Dempster, Irene McGuire), as well as general professional correspondence; course packs and notes relating to an Environmental Issues class at the University of Toronto, for which Scott Harris was a guest lecturer; materials used in the organization of various literary events and readings; along with books, pamphlets and a small amount of AV material.

This first donation for Antanas Sileika and includes published (including Woman in Bronze,
Underground, and Dinner at the End of the World); unpublished manuscript materials; juvenilia;
correspondence; CBC Radio comedy sketch scripts; various publications he has worked on or
contributed to; and materials from the Humber School for Writers including correspondence and
transcriptions of author talks for a series called The Writing Life.

2016 accrual

This collection consists of material created and collected throughout the life of the donor, Julian Samuel. His time as a photographer, filmmaker, painter, and writer are present.
