B1997-0024: These records document the activities of Brian Land as an undergraduate at the University of Toronto and as a librarian; as executive assistant (1963-1964) to Walter Gordon when, as Minister of Finance, he presented his first budget in the House of Commons in 1963; as a member of the executive of the Davenport-Dovercourt Liberal Association (Gordon’s constituency), and as advisor to and partial author of Gordon’s incomplete memoir, Pursuit of an ideal – Canadian independence. They also cover his involvement in the 1962 federal election (the subject of his MA thesis) that was published in 1965 as Eglinton: the election study of a federal constituency. B2008-0015: This accession documents Prof. Land’s professional activities with the Canadian Library Association, the Ontario Library Association and the Institute of Professional Librarians prior to his appointment as Director of the School of Library Science in 1964. Collection contains personal and professional papers pertaining to Robertson Davies. This includes material relating to Davies’ early life, including writing and acting as a student at Upper Canada College (1929-1932), his studies at Baillol College at Oxford (1935-1938), and participation in theatrical performances in Kingston, Oxford, the Old Vic Theatre, Peterborough and the Stratford Festival (1934-1960). The papers contain a small amount of material related to Davies’ career as a journalist at Saturday Night magazine and the Peterborough Examiner. These papers contain extensive material on the novels, books and writing of Davies. This includes drafts, proofs, correspondence, reviews, clippings and any stage adaptations of his novels from The Salterton Trilogy (Tempest-Tost, Leaven of Malice and A Mixture of Frailties), The Deptford Trilogy (Fifth Business, The Manticore and World of Wonders), The Cornish Trilogy (The Rebel Angels, What’s Bred in the Bone and The Lyre of Orpheus) and the incomplete Toronto Trilogy (Murther and Walking Spirits and The Cunning Man). Also included are a complete set of original drafts and woodcuts for the Penguin edition covers of Davies’ novels, which were designed by the American printmaker Bascove. Limited material related to his essays, short stories and non-fiction publications, notably including Shakespeare’s Boy Actors, A Voice from the Attic, High Spirits and his books of fictional essays by Samuel Marchbanks are a part of the papers. Additionally, the collection includes considerable records relating to Davies’ contributions to anthologies as well as professional writing in academic journals, newspapers and magazines. These papers encompass Davies’ career as a playwright, including material related to twenty-two original works including drafts, scripts, photographs, posters, playbills and clippings, as well as the complete papers relating to the production of The Golden Ass which was staged after Davies’ death. The collection contains a large sampling of correspondence of both a professional and personal nature spanning from 1934 to his death in 1995. Also included in the collection is material related to the professional career of Davies’ as a well-known Canadian writer, this includes photographs and press clippings as well as speeches and commentaries made by Davies and his awards. Records also pertain to academic and trade writing on Davies and his work, most notably a complete set of interviews conducted with family, friends, colleagues and acquaintances by Val Ross during the course of her writing Robertson Davies: A Portrait in Mosaic (2009). Papers also relate to the eighteen years Davies spent as the Master of Massey College beginning in 1963. Including articles on the founding of Massey College, the death of Vincent Massey, newsletters, teaching material and invitations and programmes for the annual Christmas Gaudy, printed on the Massey College Press. Also included is a small amount of personal records including travel records, calendars, real estate and list of personal effects. Finally, the collection contains a series dedicated to the collecting practices of Dr. Rick Davis, who collected and assembled these papers. This includes Davis’ invoices and notes for his Davies material, as well as correspondence including exchanges with Robertson Davies, Moira Whalon, Brenda Davies and Jennifer Surridge.

Personal records of Murray Alexander Wilton document his student years at University of Toronto and his subsequent involvement in the University of Toronto Athletic Association (UTAA). Student papers include: course lecture notes, essays and exams for courses mainly in economics, accounting, finance as well as some general Arts courses such as English, History and Psychology. Professors whose courses are documented included A.F.W. Plumptre (Political Economy), Vincent Bladen (Political Economy), Gilbert Jackson (Commerce and Finance), W.S. Ferguson (Accounting) and S.S. Cassidy (Social Science). There is also one photograph 1931-32, House Committee of Hart House. These student records date from 1929 to 1932.

From the mid 1960s to the early 1990s, Wilton was very active on both the UTAA Advisory Board and T-Holder's Association. Correspondence, reports, minutes of meetings, agenda and notes document his activities on these two bodies. Of particular note is a 1968 report Wilton wrote for the Advisory Board regarding the role and influence of the UTAA Advisory Board. There is also one photograph of one of the UTAA committees circa 1965. These records date from 1961-1993 with the bulk of them dated from 1967-1973.

This fonds consists of one accession of personal papers of Prof. Phyllis E. Jones. It contains primarily records relating to her career with the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Toronto and manuscripts of her published and unpublished works relating to community health and nursing education. Among the records relating to her personal life and education (Series 1) will be found certificates, photographs and a scrapbook maintained during her years as a student in the General Nursing and Public Health Nursing, Part 1 diploma programme between 1944 and 1946. Series 2 documents her activities as a faculty member including copies of early planning reports relating to the School of Nursing prepared by former directors such as Helen Carpenter and Florence Emory, as well as records generated during her tenure as Dean of the Faculty.

Copies of some of her published and numerous unpublished papers and presentations are contained in Series 3.

This fonds unfortunately does not contain any of her lectures or teaching materials or research notes. There is little information relating to her professional activities with the Victorian Order of Nurses, Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario, the Metropolitan Toronto District Health Council or Toronto area teaching hospitals.

The collection consists of approximately 492 photographs, approximately 170 negatives and 115 index cards. The photographs in this depict life in the Royal Military College, training exercises such as building a Flying Bridge and other construction and training work in Canada and England as well as some personal photographs of Mr. Darwin and his family and friends. All of the photographs in this collecton were taken between 1930 and 1945.

Box 1-5 contain black and white photographs mounted on index cards, some with negatives attached. Box 6 contains 115 alphabetical subject index cards, 54 loose photo duplicates and 129 loose negatives.

This fonds is divided into 11 series reflecting the filing system used by Nevitt during his career, and based on subject divisions. The series are: ‘Subject Files’, ‘Early Manuscripts’, ‘Northern Electric Company’, ‘Discoveries International Symposium’, ‘Management by PreVision’, ‘Published Articles and Papers’, ‘Captain Gulliver’s Interplanetary Travels’, ‘ABC’, ‘Correspondence’, ‘Who Was Marshall McLuhan’, and ‘Printed Materials’.

The first series ‘Subject Files’, consists of 57 files containing a variety of textual records including correspondence, notes, printed materials, clippings, manuscripts, typescripts, photographs, ephemera, and overhead transparencies, and a small amount of audio recordings in various formats. The records are grouped together in individual files based on subject matter divisions reflecting specific creative and academic projects that Nevitt worked on alone and in conjunction with McLuhan, and topics of interest to Nevitt. The second series ‘Early Manuscripts’ consists of typescripts, and drafts of various academic manuscripts and papers written by Nevitt. The records in this series were created between 1945 – 1965.

The third series ‘Northern Electric Company’ includes notes, seminar material, and clippings compiled by Nevitt during his time with the Northern Electric Company between 1961 and 1962. The series includes material from various seminars organized by the American Management Association and attended by Nevitt.

The fourth series ‘Discoveries International Symposium’ includes correspondence, notes, ephemera, and symposium and conference materials related to Nevitt’s participation in Discoveries International Symposiums held in 1977 and 1978.

The fifth series, ‘Management by PreVision’ includes notes, clippings, drafts, correspondence, and other textual records related to Nevitt’s book project ‘Management by PreVision’.

The sixth series ‘Published Articles and Papers’, includes a collection of chronologically arranged articles and manuscripts written and published by Nevitt and others between 1951-1994, and related correspondence.

The seventh series ‘Captain Gulliver’s Interplanetary Travels’, includes correspondence, clippings, notes, contracts, manuscripts, and other textual records related to Nevitt’s science fiction book project of the same name.

The eighth series ‘ABC of Prophecy’ includes clippings, notes, manuscripts, and other textual records related to Nevitt’s book project of the same name.

The ninth series ‘Correspondence’ includes a collection of chronologically arranged correspondence related to Nevitt and generated between 1966 – 1993.

The Marjorie Lamb/ Alert Service fonds is primarily comprised of the research and publishing files of Marjorie Lamb in her capacity as a public speaker and the author of the Alert Service newsletter. The newsletter, which she published in the 1950s and 1960s sought to expose and counteract Communist activities in Canada. Her files extensively document the labour movement, Cold War political issues at the municipal, provincial and federal levels, and radical social movements in Toronto and across Canada. Implicit throughout the records are the issues of domestic espionage and propaganda.
