The fonds is divided into two series.

Series 1 contains course notes, correspondence, addresses, articles, manuscripts, notes, minutes, and photographs relating to the activities of Thom Greenfield as a professor of educational administration at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education and as a gay activist, especially in relation to "Gay Fathers of Toronto", of which he was one of the founders.

Series 2 contains professional materials that relate to Greenfield's appointment at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (correspondence with students and faculty, letters of reference, memoranda, and manuscripts), editorial work related to Greenfield's position as Associate Editor of "Curriculum Inquiry," manuscripts and correspondence related to the organization "Gay Fathers of Toronto," manuscripts for "The educational programs and purposes of the Batchewana Band: a management audit,"and personal correspondence and manuscripts relating to finances, politics, and family.

Files created by Mr. Vaughan during his service as Chairman of the Property Committee and later of the Board of Governors documenting his involvement in the university's major physical expansion programme; and photographs showing exterior and interior views of house at Maplehearn (1895-1898).

This fonds consists of one accession of personal records of Dr. William J. Fowler, former professor of applied psychology at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto, and various US institutions such as University of Chicago, Harvard and Tufts University. The records are an important resource for students of the history of development of child studies in North America. Dr. Fowler, in addition to developing his own theories on early childhood development, was a colleague of several American pioneers in this area, such as Dr. Helen Koch, Dr. Robert Hess, Dr. Alice Honig and Prof. J. McVicker Hunt.

The records are organized into 10 series reflecting a career that spanned more than 40 years, from his days as a graduate student at Harvard and the University of Chicago to his years as a private consultant in his company, Center for Early Learning and Child Care, Inc. Included in this accession is correspondence, manuscripts of both published and unpublished works, teaching materials, research materials, grant proposals and reviews, special project files relating to the joint OISE- Canadian Mothercraft Society of the early 1970’s, and records of the Center for Early Learning and Child Care,Inc.

Original research data with personal identifiers for children as subjects of research were not retained.

Fonds consists of the professional and personal records of composer Michael Colgrass. The collection includes manuscripts of his compositions; administrative and financial documents relating to commissions with orchestras, performers, and publishers; and materials generated from the performance of these compositions (including recordings, programs, reviews, and program notes). Other records relate to workshops that Colgrass led, particularly his Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) workshops and Colgrass' writings, including poetry, articles, manuscripts and notes for his books, and correspondence with friends and colleagues.

To varying degrees, records in this fonds document key components of Prof. French’s career both within UTIAS and as an outside consultant. His education in the newly developing field of aerospace science is documented in his course notes found in Series 10. These notes were kept specifically to document the early teaching of this subject since Prof. French took courses from Professors Ben Etkin and Irvine Glass whose papers are also held by the University Archives. General correspondence files in Series 1, talks and papers found in Series 2 and 3 as well as course lectures found in Series 7 document his broad role as a university professor including his publishing activities, his relationship with other professionals and his role as an academic advisor and teacher. His role as an administrator both at the University and on the boards of professional associations are only marginally documented in two small series of records: University of Toronto, Series 6 and Professional Associations Series 8.

While Series 5 Research is by far the largest series in this fonds, it is mainly confined to the latter part of his career relating to research supporting SCIEX. Except for a few files, early research files are absent from this accession and researchers interested in research in the 1960s leading to Prof. French’s participation in the Viking project will have to make due with records found in Series 2 and 3 and possibly some correspondence in Series 1. The strength of this fonds is how well it documents the research at SCIEX, one of Canada’s most successful companies to evolve from a university research facility. Most records in Series 5, as well administrative files in Series 6 SCIEX, give a good picture of SCIEX’s evolution including the research undertaken, the funding sources available at the time, the business strategies that let to its success and specifically the instrumental role Prof. French played in this commercial enterprise. These records will be of interest to anyone researching the commercialization and marketing of technology in the Canadian setting. SCIEX is also a successful example of cooperation between industry and a university with the support of government agencies.

Correspondence and photograph concerning the awarding of the achievement medal of the Alpha Omega Fraternity to Albert Einstein; correspondence and publication regarding Einstein's efforts on behalf of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Records documenting Professor Acland’s research, publication and teaching activities. Includes notebooks, scripts and draft papers, photographs, slides, and negatives. The fonds is dominated by over 4000 prints and negatives documenting his research interest in and publication of his book The Gothic Vault and the book Building by the Sea written with Eric Arthur on the study of maritime architecture on Canada’s east coast. Also included are numerous prints of Toronto where Acland was active in the preservation of historic buildings such as Old City Hall.

This accession documents to a limited degree James Acland’s research, teaching and publications. It is limited because very little of his textual records survived, although there is a good number of notebooks that were mostly likely used for lectures. Records relating to his architectural conservation work especially relating to saving Old City Hall are held at the City of Toronto Archives.

This accession does however give a good representation of Acland’s photographic work that formed the basis of his research and publications. There are extensive photographs and negatives relating to The Gothic Vault as well as Building by the Sea. There is a large collection of photographs taken on a trip to Europe in 1964. These would have most certainly been used for research and teaching. All the images in this collection are well identified in terms of their location and site. However, few give specific dates. It is assumed that most of the images were taken through the 1960s and some in the early 1970s.

Sometime after his death, a collection of 25,000 slides was donated to the University of Toronto and was distributed among 15 departments. A catalogue of these slides was prepared by the Centre for Medieval Studies and published in 1984: Catalogue of the James Acland Slide Collection. Only a few slides were donated with this accession and it is possible they are duplicates of what is found in the larger collection.

This fonds is a very complete documentation of all aspects of Prof. Stoicheff career. His relationship with colleagues at the University, nationally and internationally is evident throughout but especially in the Series 1 Correspondence, Series 8 Professional Association and Activities, and Series 9 University of Toronto. Series 1 Correspondence also documents his mentoring role and his role as a referee and evaluator of peer and student work. This is also documented in Series 11 Teaching, Series 12 Correspondence with Students and Series 8 Professional Associations and Activities. His research activities are extensively documented not only in Series 6 Research but in Series 10 Ontario Laser and Lightwave Research Centre and in Series 3 Publications. This surgical fellowship was established in 1954 by surgeons who were residents under the tenure of Robert Meredith Janes, Chairman of the Department of Surgery from 1947-1957. There is also a brief history of the society as well as photos of Dr. and Mrs Janes and a group photo of the Gallie - Janes Course, 1950-51. (1 box, 1950-[199-])

Each card includes photographs of the member and his (her) spouse, personal information and a list of professional appointments and accomplishments. Members of the Society included medical practicioners who were former students of Dr. Robert Meredith Janes, professor in the Faculty of Medicine's postgraduate surgical training course. Records in this fonds document several aspects of Professor Warkentin’s career in the Department of English. There is extensive correspondence with colleagues and Canadian writers including James Reaney, Jay MacPherson, David Staines, William Blissett, Margaret Stobie, George Woodcock to list only a few (Series 1 and 6). There are also records relating to her teaching including lectures, course outlines and research files on Canadian authors – see series 4, 6 and 7. Her research interests and editing activities are documented in records found in series 1, 5 and 6 including correspondence, manuscripts, research notes, bibliographies, reviews and grant applications.

The records in this accession document Dr. Alick Little’s research, teaching and publication activities over a forty-year medical career with the University of Toronto and two teaching hospitals, Sunnybrook and St. Michael’s in Toronto. Arranged in six series, the records reflect Dr. Little’s primary professional activity as a medical researcher and administrator of multiple medical studies. Areas of research include the relationship of lipids and heart disease, hereditary fructose intolerance and coronary atherosclerosis. His activities in various professional associations both in Canada and the United States, including his participation on committees, as well as his role in University of Toronto academic and administrative functions are not documented in any detail. Series 1 contains general correspondence with colleagues, students, faculty and administrators at the University of Toronto and other teaching hospitals relating to research, teaching and publication activities. Also included are letters of reference for his staff, research associates and students as well as records documenting other professional relationships with organizations such as the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

The records documenting his activities at Sunnybrook Hospital are primarily concerned with his participation in the Atherosclerosis Project sponsored from 1952 to 1962 by the Department of Veterans Affairs. This study was one of the first in Canada to study the link between lipids and heart disease. These records document fairly completely the administrative history of this study at Sunnybrook, the nature and scope of the research conducted by Dr. Little and his team, the data collected as well as the research results. Series 5 consists of patient case files and summarized data for both control and study groups, data files on other diseases studied in conjunction with the primary study, correspondence, annual reports, and manuscripts of articles.

Although his association with St. Michael’s Hospital dates from the early 1950’s when he established the Diabetic Clinic, the records in Series 2 document primarily his activities following the establishment of the Toronto/McMaster Lipid Research Clinic (LRC) in 1973. In addition to his role as Director of the LRC (see A2002-0009), Dr. Little spearheaded the establishment of other programs at St.Michael’s Hospital. These include the Clinical Investigation Unit and the Lipid Research Laboratory. Records of the Clinical Investigation Unit’s fructosemia case study are included within this series. His participation in the hospital’s Advisory Committee, Department of Medicine and as director of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism is also documented in this series. Grant application records in Series 4 document requests for funds for other studies on related topics from 1968 to 1992 from the Ontario Heart Foundation (and its successor body, the Heart and Stroke Foundation) as well as Health and Welfare Canada and the U.S. National Institutes of Health. These records also document through curriculum vitae and other records many of the people who were members of the study team collaborating with Dr. Little.

While the bulk of records related to Dr. Little’s work at the Toronto/McMaster Lipid Research Clinic are included in A2002-0009, research material from specific studies conducted through the Toronto McMaster Lipid Research Clinic comprise Series 7 of the J. A. Little fonds. Documentation includes material related to the Apolipoprotein C-II Deficiency Study, the Coronary Primary Prevention Trial (CPPT), as well as components of the multi-year Toronto McMaster Lipid Research Clinics Population (Prevalence) Studies.

Throughout his career, Dr. Little wrote, lectured and published extensively on his own and as part of a research group. Series 3 provides a fairly complete collection of his manuscripts of both published and unpublished writings dating from his time as research associate to professor of medicine at the University of Toronto. Articles on the results of the Department of Veterans Affairs study will be found in Series 5. Manuscripts relating to the official reports produced for the Toronto/McMaster Lipid Research Project are not among these papers and will be found in A2002-0009.

This fonds consists of 3 accessions which together give a fairly complete documentation of Prof. Prentice’s career as a scholar, mentor and teacher. Extensive correspondence, memos, e-mails, research notes and manuscripts found in various series document her scholarly contributions. Correspondence with students, letters of recommendation and her leadership on associations and projects document her wide influence among historians. Since she was a pioneer in the teaching of women’s history, her teaching files found in Series 9 are important resources in studying women’s history as an emerging discipline in higher education.

Perhaps most importantly however, this fonds documents the network of Canadian academics, most of which were women, in the area of women’s history, the history of education and women’s studies in general. Many of Prof. Prentice projects and publications were collaborative and therefore the fonds documents her relationship with this network of women historians. It is also evident that through these collaborations, Prof. Prentice was not only at the centre of women’s studies within her own generation but also influenced the next generation of scholars who have gone on to make their own contributions in history departments and women’s studies programs throughout Canadian universities.

Prof Prentice is a pioneer in both teaching and researching women’s history. As a result, these records will be of interest to anyone researching the evolution of women’s history as a discipline, the teaching of the history of education and women’s history as well the role of women in higher education.

The fonds consists of illustrations by Jane Champagne for the 1952 publication Trinity 1852-1952 published by the Trinity University Review, a student publication of Trinity College, Toronto. The fonds includes some printer’s proofs of the above.

Course and laboratory notes relating to Margaret Cranston Parsons' undergraduate and graduate training in the United States and research files assembled largely while a special lecturer in the Department of Zoology, University of Toronto. This finding aid has been compiled from inventories of the four accessions prepared by Harold Averill and Garron Wells. The fonds describes the personal records of Dr. Ernest McCulloch documenting his career as professor of medicine and administrator at the University of Toronto, and as medical researcher and author of over 200 articles mainly relating to his work on leukaemia and other blood related disorders. Arranged in 17 series, this fonds contains professional and personal correspondence, files relating to administrative activities at the University of Toronto and the Ontario Cancer Institute/Princess Margaret Hospital, subject files on external activities with various professional and academic organizations, editorial boards, etc., teaching materials including lecture notes and extensive research materials documenting experiments relating to cell growth in mice conducted during the 1960's . Also included are graphic materials documenting activities such as meetings and awards as well as illustrations for presentations and publications.

This fonds consists of one accession covering the four decades of his career as historian, author, teacher and administrator in the Department of History at the University of Toronto. The fonds is arranged in five series. Series 1 consists of chronologically arranged correspondence of both a personal and professional nature dating from his arrival in Toronto in 1961 to a few years after his retirement in 2003. Prof. Berger was a contemporary of many of Canada’s leading historians. This series of correspondence documents his professional and personal relationship with such notable historians as Ramsay Cook, Donald Creighton, Kenneth McNaught, and Ray Mclean, as well as former students such as Douglas Owram, Gerald Friesen, Bob Rae, Brook Taylor and Michael Gauvreau. Additional correspondence relating to various internal and external professional activities are found in Series 2. Series 3 and 4 document his teaching activities and his relationship with selected graduate students from the early 1970s to the mid 1990s. Records relating to his publication activities in Series 5 are, unfortunately, not as complete since many files do not contain manuscripts. In spite of this, the series provides a fairly complete record of his major publications including files on each of his four books, as well as articles, lectures and other academic works. Also in this series will be found a file containing an annotated version of a typescript of Harold Innis’ autobiography.

Personal records of Harvey Moldofsky, Professor Emeritus, Department of Psychiatry, former Director of the Centre for Sleep and Chronobiology at Toronto Western Hospital, and a world renowned specialist in sleep disorders. The records consist of correspondence, notes, raw data, addresses, publications, photographs, slides, posters, floppy disks, CDs, videos and artifacts documenting his research and other activities. Most of the files relate to his research work on sleep problems over many years, in particular those associated with the astronauts and cosmonauts on the NASA shuttle/Mir space station in the 1990’s, as part of the Microgravity, Sleep and Immune Functions in Humans (SWIF) project. Also included is the first working model of a sleep apnea machine (ca. 1983).

Included is one file of miscellaneous correspondence and another of awards and recognitions for Sword . University related files include one on the Library Oral History Project which he administered, one on the tributes to Harold Innis, and others on recognitions for Frances Ireland, F.C. A. Jeanneret and Sidney Hermant. There is also a copy of Sword's paper entitled "Democratization of Universities, 1960-1974: some Commonwealth comparisons" and a copy of a paper given to him "The History of CUSO" [Canadian University Students Overseas]. Also included are photographs documenting Sword at various University events from 1967 to 1978, mainly photographed by Robert Lansdale. Also a photo album on the retirement party for Sarah McCausland.

Records accumulated by Ruth Northcott, largely in her capacity as a member of the executive committee of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada and as editor of its Journal. These accessions of personal records provide a fairly complete representation of Samuel Hollander’s professional life as an academic. The accessions cover his entire career from his student days at the London School of Economics to his retirement from the University of Toronto in 1998 and his appointment at Ben-Gurion University in Beer-Sheva, Israel in 2000. Correspondence, found in the various series gives a rich commentary on his professional endeavours and gives a good overview of the debates surrounding Hollander’s work. Lecture notes and taped lectures document how his ideas were taught in the classroom and his Ph.D. files found in Series 5 show his dedication to the teaching and mentor roles for which he is so highly regarded.

Records document Elisabeth Marani’s contribution to the production of “Miss Julie” by the U.C. Players Guild in October 1954 and “Brigadoon” by University College and St. Michael’s College in 1955. Records relating to “Miss Julie” include original costume sketches, preliminary designs for sets and props as well as a one page recollection written by Elisabeth Bacque (nee Marani). Records relating to “Brigadoon” include researched sketches for costumes, a program and clippings. Finally this donation also includes sketched designs for a U.C. Follies production.

The Peter H. Russell fonds is comprised of three accessions: B2005-0001, B2017-0006, and B2019-0008. The records span over 60 years and document Prof. Russell’s academic career primarily with the Department of Political Science at the University of Toronto and as a recognized expert in the field of judicial, constitutional, and Indigenous politics.

Arranged in fourteen series, the records consist of correspondence, both personal and professional, manuscripts of published and unpublished works, addresses, talks and reviews, teaching and research materials. In particular, these records document the development of his expertise through the preparation of manuscripts, research, teaching and communication with colleagues at universities in Canada and internationally. Material also reflects Prof. Russell’s advocacy and active engagement in a number of national issues.

Correspondents in accession B2005-0001 include members of the Canadian judiciary such as Justices D. C. McDonald, Bora Laskin, Bertha Wilson, and Alan Linden, and politicians such as Bob Rae, Ian Scott, Ed Broadbent and Stephane Dion.

Both Series 6 (Professional activities and addresses) and Series 11 (Articles, reviews, published addresses and referee comments), contains samples of talks and addresses delivered to prominent bodies such as the Toronto Club, the Canadian Club (Toronto and Winnipeg), to university audiences and local community groups such as Learning Unlimited.

His public service activities with Indigenous groups, such as the Dene Nation, and with related governmental bodies, such as the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples and the Ipperwash Inquiry, are documented in Series 5 (Consultation and public service). In addition to his academic activities, material from accession B2005-0001 in this series includes records relating to his community involvement with the Wychwood Rate Payer’s Association, the Bathurst-St. Clair Task Force, Legal Aid Committee, Ontario Liberal Association and University Settlement, among others.

Finally, material in this fonds provides significant coverage of Prof. Russell’s participation in associations and organizations such as the Churchill Society for the Advancement of Parliamentary Democracy (Series 7) University of Toronto Faculty Association (Series 8), the College and Retiree Association of Canada (Sub-series 10.1) and the Retired Academics and Librarians of the University of Toronto (Sub-series 10.2).

Records documenting Dr. S.D.T. Robertson's career as a professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Toronto. Included are theses of students he supervised, student term papers, lectures and course notes. There are also files related to his research specifically in the field of electric transportation systems and electrical distribution system design. Special media materials relate to his work on electric vehicles.

Consists of research files and papers relating to 16th century royal entries in France, including photocopies of original documents, and documentation from "The Royal Tour of France by Charles IX and Catherine de Medici (1564-66)", U of T Press, 1979, and additional royal entries, court festivals and important secondary sources, both before and after the Royal Tour.
