Fonds consists of records created and collected by John Beckwith during his career as a composer, writer, music critic, radio broadcaster, administrator, educator, and performer. Records include sketches, drafts, and manuscripts of his compositions and arrangements, as well as programs, posters, reviews, correspondence, recordings, and other materials from premieres and other performances of his works.

Fonds also includes records relating to Beckwith's work as a radio commentator and script writer for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC); music critic for the Toronto Star; professor and dean of the University of Toronto Faculty of Music; and writer of numerous lectures, articles, and books.

Compositions and arrangements

Series consists of manuscript scores, parts, and sketches for original compositions and arrangements by John Beckwith.

Four conceits : for piano

File consists of manuscript scores and sketches for John Beckwith's "Four Conceits for piano," including the complete manuscript, earlier versions of the composition, and the master score transparencies from the Canadian Music Centre publication (1972). The collection was also titled "Four piano pieces" and an early version of the set included six—not four—conceits. Selections included in the files are:

March : for piano

File consists of manuscript score for a piano piece that John Beckwith submitted (unsuccessfully) to a contest organized by the Canadian Armed Forces Bands (ca. 1946).

Five lyrics of the T'ang dynasty : for voice and piano

File consists of a copy of the manuscript score, the ink transparency masters, and manuscript scores with the following five songs:

  • The Staircase of jades (poem by Li Po.
  • The Limpid river (poem by Wang Wei)
  • The Inlaid harp (poem by Li Shang-Yin)
  • On a rainy night (poem by Li Shang-Tin)
  • Parting at a wine-shop (poem by Li Po).

Music for dancing : seven pieces for piano duet

File consists of the manuscript score transparencies for the Canadian Music Centre publication (1972) and a bound, annotated copy of the 1948 manuscript. The piece was commissioned by the Community Centre, Forest Hill Village, Toronto and dedicated to Pamela [Terry]. The movements are: Prelude, First Pantomime, Waltz, Second Pantomime, Polka, Dance for Two, and Round Dance.

File also includes a copy of the orchestrated version of "Music for Dancing," created by John Beckwith in Spring 1949 and the manuscript for a revised version for smaller orchestra, created by Beckwith in 1959.

Four songs to poems by Edith Sitwell : for high voice and piano

File consists of a copy of the manuscript score, the manuscript score transparencies, and manuscripts individual songs. The set, with text by Edith Sitwell, included the following songs:

  • Come, my Arabia
  • My desert has a noble sun for a heart
  • The Queen Bee sighed
  • The youth with the red-gold hair.

File also includes transparencies for a fifth song "You, the Young Rainbow," which was omitted from the final version, and a manuscript score for "Two Kitchen Songs" with texts by Edith Sitwell (dated December 1949).

Serenade : for high voice and piano

File consists of the ink transparency masters for the Canadian Music Centre publication (1972), copies of the 1949 and 1950 manuscript score, and manuscript sketch material. Text by Colleen Thibaudeau.

Four songs to poems by e.e. cummings : for soprano and piano

File consists of the ink transparency masters for the Canadian Music Centre publication (1972), an annotated copy of the 1950 manuscript score, and a copy of the out-of-print publication by Waterloo Music Company Limited (1975), and the manuscript score for a revised version (1976) transposed for medium-low voice. Text by ee cummings. The work was commissioned by Lois Marshall (1950).

Concerto fantasy : for piano and orchestra

File consists of annotated copies of the manuscript full score and a version for two pianos, four hands. The piece was dedicated to Alberto Guerrero. Mario Bernardi performed the premiere performance in Montreal (February 6, 1962) with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Roland Leduc.

File consists of the ink transparency masters and a pencil manuscript for a set of six pieces for solo piano:

File consists of the ink transparency masters and an annotated copy of the manuscript as well as sketches, cue sheets, parts, and a script for a performances of this song set, dedicated to Pamela [Terry]. Cue sheets for the performance include parts for guitar, recorder, trumpet, and violoncello. Texts from Ben Jonson's play Volpone:

The Killdeer : [incidental music]

File contains the score and parts for Beckwith's incidental music for the James Reaney play "The Killdeer," written for piano/celesta, clarinet, trumpet, violin, double bass, and percussion (2 players). The file also includes the music for "The River of Time" for unaccompanied medium voice and a handwritten chorale setting for the hymn “Blessed Name” by Ralph E. Hudson, which John Beckwith quoted in the incidental music for James Reaney's play "The Killdeer." The play aired on CBC-TV on March 7, 1961.

12 letters to a small town : poetry/music collage for radio

File contains the manuscript score and copied parts for "Twelve Letters to a Small Town," with words by James Reaney, commissioned by Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) radio, and first broadcast on July 26, 1961 on CBC Wednesday Night. It was repeated on June 19, 1963. The manuscript score was recopied with minor revisions in January 2002.

Suite on old tunes : for young pianists

File consists of a manuscript draft score and a photocopy of the final manuscript for a set of three traditional songs, arranged by John Beckwith for solo piano:

File contains sketches for the rondeau, first couplet, and second couplet of John Beckwith’s “A Chaucer Suite” for contralto, tenor, and baritone. The suite consists of four movements:

  4. Gentilesse.

Concertino : for horn and orchestra

File consists of the manuscript scores and sketches for John Beckwith's Concertino, including the full score and piano reduction. The work was commissioned by the Vancouver branch, Royal Conservatory Alumni Association, for the Vancouver Junior Symphony.

Jonah : chamber cantata for chorus, four soloists, and instruments

File contains the manuscript, sketches, and copies of the full and vocal scores for Beckwith's chamber cantata "Jonah," for alto, tenor and two baritone soloists, SATB chorus, and instrumental ensemble (clarinet, horn, strings and timpani). The cantata, commissioned by the Festival Singers of Toronto, with additional texts by Jay Macpherson, consists of six movements:

The trumpets of summer

File contains the tone rows used in Beckwith's orchestration, sketches, the manuscript score, and an annotated copy of the score. Trumpets of Summer, with text by Margaret Atwood, was commissioned by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation for the Shakespeare quadricentennial (1964) and was written for male speaker, SATB soloists, SATB chorus, and instrumental ensemble (flute, bassoon, trumpet, percussion, harp, and violoncello).

Peacock and gull

File contains sketches and notes for an electronic music compositions with percussion that John Beckwith composed at the University of Toronto Electronic Music Studio (UTEMS), completed June 28, 1965.

Canada dash, Canada dot : The line across

File contains the master score transparencies, manuscript parts, and annotated copies of the score with inserted scripts for "The Line Across," the first part of the radio collage Canada Dash, Canada Dot. The collage, with text by James Reaney, is written for soprano, alto, baritone, and bass soloists; four speakers; and instrumental ensemble (flute/piccolo, trombone, percussion, piano/celeste, violin, and double bass/mandolin). Commissioned by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

File contains the master score transparencies, manuscript parts, and a manuscript score for "Traveler," an excerpt for voice, piano, and drums from "The Line Up and Down." "The Line Up and Down" is the second part of the radio collage Canada Dash, Canada Dot for two speakers and instrumental ensemble (clarinet, trumpet, percussion, piano, violin, and double bass) with text by James Reaney. Commissioned by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC).

Sharon fragments : for mixed chorus unaccompanied (SATB)

File consists of the master score transparencies for a work for SATB chorus with keyboard for rehearsal only. The work uses texts by David Willson and is dedicated to James Reaney. It was commissioned by Waterloo Lutheran University for the University Chorus, conducted by Walter Kemp. The music is based on two early-19th-century hymn tunes transcribed by Keith MacMillan: Wells and Armley.

Place of meeting : for mixed chorus, full orchestra, and three soloists

File contains sketches, the master manuscript score created in 1972 for the Canadian Music Centre, manuscript vocal score, and parts for speaker, tenor, male blues singer, SATB, and orchestra. Text by Dennis Lee. The work was commissioned by the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir and the Canadian Music Centre under a grant from the Centennial Commission (1967).

The shivaree : opera in two acts

File consists of the manuscript full score, sketches, and ink transparency masters for two versions of the vocal score: the original version with two acts and the revised 1982 version with a prologue. The libretto is by James Reaney. File also includes the complete set of masters for the full score, including a pencil manuscript of the prologue addition, and orchestral parts.

Circle, with tangents : for harpsichord and 13 solo strings

File contains sketches, the manuscript score, and two annotated copies of the final score for harpsichord, 7 violins, 3 violas, 2 violoncellos and 1 double bass. The work was commissioned by the Vancouver Festival Society in the Centennial Year of Canadian Confederation (1967).
