B2000-0018: One surveying instrument called a planimeter, which was made in 1893 and used by John Galbraith, the first Head of the Ontario School of Practical Science and later, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering.

The fonds consists of three notebooks with handwritten notes from Ellis, a 1921 publication by his daughter titled “A Family Record”, and a book, titled “The Elements of Materia Medica & Therapeutics” by Johathan Pereira, marked with inscriptions. One notebook records his career in forensic science with his handwritten notes from criminal cases and correspondence with individuals such as the attorney general and coroner’s offices.

The collection consists of holograph manuscripts and copies of manuscripts by Thompson, including two drafts for his projected book: a narrative account of his explorations in western America from 1784 to 1812. It also includes several sketches of mountain elevations, some of which were published in J.B. Tyrell's 1916 edition of the Narrative, and several other fragments of manuscripts by Thompson, typed transcripts of his journals, and photostats of other original Thompson material held elsewhere.

B2013-0028: Portraits of William J. Houston, student in the Faculty of Education in 1913 and later a graduate of Arts (B.A. 1924) in World War I uniform. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the 170th Canadian Infantry Battalion and subsequently in active service in France in 1918.

Includes the personal and professional records of Elizabeth Brady (written as ‘EB’ throughout the finding aid). Personal material contains correspondence with friends and family spanning her childhood and young adulthood, as well as records pertaining to her education, notably yearbooks, transcripts, degrees and notes. Also includes correspondence with notable Canadian writers, including Anne Cameron (also known as Barbara Cameron/Cam Hubert) and Marian Engel.

Her professional records encompass her career as an editor, with Fireweed and Canadian Woman Studies, as well as a free-lance writer and novelist. There is material relating to all major writing projects, both published and unpublished, including poetry, articles, reviews, academic writing and novels. There are numerous drafts and revisions for two unpublished novels – Blue Notes and Present Fears, as well as two academic books – Barfly and Women and Solitude. Brady’s three published mystery novels are also well documented including notes, early drafts, research and correspondence.

One-line-a-day farm diaries kept by William Smellie (1836-1919) of Glenelg Township, Ontario. Smellie’s handwritten diaries date from 1883 to 1916, with his earlier diaries dating from 1879-1882, here reproduced in photocopy. Through his daily entries, Smellie offers a glimpse into farm life in Ontario at the turn of the century. He not only documents livestock, crops, and weather on the farm, but also records important events in his family and community. The diaries also include numerous newspaper clippings and loose notes kept by Smellie.

The Keemlé Family Papers

A collection of papers pertaining to the Keemlé family of Delaware, Washington, and Toronto. Although the family was American, several lived in Toronto in the years immediately before the First World War. One son, Ned, enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force at the beginning of the hostilities and was killed in France in 1915. Another son, Louis, enlisted in the American forces later in the war, but survived. The family also had connections to St Michael’s College, University of Toronto.

Some personal correspondence addressed to Sir H.E. Brittain, chairman of the Pilgrims between 1902-1918, is also included.

The collection consists of a disassembled scrapbook of insurance underwriters' reports and records, fire reports, original news clippings and photographs, and other miscellaneous material on various North American conflagrations between 1904 and 1918. Of particular local interest are the pages (five in total) devoted to the Toronto fire of 1904. Among the other major North American fires represented in the scrapbook include those in the cities of Baltimore, Rochester, Halifax, Indianapolis, New Orleans, Three Rivers (Que.), Salem (Mass.), Campbelltown (NB), Houston and Atlanta, among others. The scrapbook appears to have been assembled by an underwriter from the firm of Royal Insurance Company of Liverpool.
