The Philomath. Vol 1, No 1

This edition of The Philomath. contains a prospectus, which outlines its aim to publish a semimonthly periodical devoted to subjects of general literature. The first editor was I.B. Howard. Contributors included S.S. Nelles.

The first issue states that, "The principal objects of the Society in this publication are, The personal improvement of those interested. The preservation in the Society of some standing memorial of its original institutions and the perpetuation of its literary character."

Contains quotations, musings, small essays, daily plans, rules of conduct, character sketches, and a description of 1847 Conference held in Toronto (with remarks about figures such as Dr. Alder and the Ryerson brothers). Touches on wide range of topics (most of which deal in some way with self improvement), also comments on future of Canada, the Conservative party, limitations of creeds, scripture interpretations, analysis of aspects of Wesleyan Methodism-especially an interesting section on holiness.
