Ceylon Newspaper Limited/ The Sutantiran

Ceylon Newspapers Ltd. was registered as a company in 1946, with Chelvanayakam being one of the directors. From 1947 to 1983 it published the Tamil paper The Sutantiran. There was a brief pause from 2 June 1958 to 20 October 1958 when the Government closed the press under emergency powers.

Subseries contains account statements, memos, reports, and correspondence regarding the newspaper.

Miscellaneous correspondence

Subseries contains correspondence belonging to other members of the family whose correspondence was also found at 16 Alfred House Gardens. Also contains some personal material of individuals who worked for ITAK at a time when the office may have been located at the house as well.

Emily Grace Chelvanayakam correspondence

Subseries contains personal correspondence addressed to Emily Grace Chelvanayakam. Letters are arranged alphabetically by the correspondent's name.
Series also contains the many letters of condolences and telegrams sent to Emily Grace after her husband's death in April 1977. Personal condolence letters from family are in a folder organized chronologically. The letters of condolence and telegrams are in their original order, which may have been by date received.

Documentation

Subseries contains reports, correspondence, and legal documentation. Also contains fragments of letters and documents heavily damaged by insects and therefore difficult to place in context due to the loss of the material. The materials relate to the professional files but were found in miscellaneous folders and therefore arranged by the archivist.

Professional correspondence

Subseries contains correspondence in the following order: early professional correspondence predominantly from the late 1940s and 1950s; correspondence to Chelvanayakam; correspondence from Chelvanayakam; and miscellaneous correspondence to/from individuals other than Chelvanayakam.

Early professional correspondence (1940s-1950s) has been arranged chronologically since this covers a time when many party members were under house arrest resulting in increased written correspondence, and since documentation from this time period is sparse. All other correspondence is alphabetical.

Professional correspondence was found in miscellaneous boxes and has been arranged alphabetically by correspondent by the archivist. This correspondence was found separate from the professional files although subject-wise they can overlap.

S. J. V. Chelvanayakam personal correspondence

Subseries contains Chelvanayakam’s correspondence that is personal in nature, including correspondence with family. Letters are mostly addressed to Chelvanayakam but letters from Chelvanayakam exist where he made copies. Letters are arranged alphabetically (in English) by the correspondent’s name.
