Minutes (1939-1941) and account books (1939-1946) of the Canadian Society for the Protection of Science and Learning, established at the University of Toronto to lend aid to scholars and scientists displaced by political events in European countries.

Collection of letters exchanged between William Brown (1917-1948), Royal Canadian Engineers Lieutenant, and Wilma Brown (née Perry) (1921-2003), Royal Canadian medical Corps Lieutenant, during World War II, in addition to related photographs.

William Brown (1917-1948) and Wilma Brown (née Perry) (1921-2003) met aboard the S. S. Bayano, a 6800-ton banana boat converted to transport troops from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Britain, in November 1943. Bill and Wilma were stationed in different parts of Europe, but stayed in contact by mail over the next two years. The couple married in 1945 and returned to Canada after the War, settling in Val d’Or, Quebec, where Bill worked as an engineer at the East Sullivan Gold Mine. They had one child together. Bill was killed in a mine accident on April 15, 1948. Wilma became a Professor of Anatomy at the University of Toronto, where she retired from in 1985. She passed away November 20, 2003.

A collection predominately of newspaper clippings from the First and Second World War, including those from Canada, the United Kingdom, and the German Empire.

Four chronologically ordered volumes relating to research carried out by Professor George F Wright on Second World War defence projects for the federal government of Canada through the National Research Council of Canada.

The first volume is Defence Project CE-12 and encompassses the dates December, 1939 to June, 1942. It contains a series of chemical research reports related to wartime defence initiatives. The following three volumes consists of reports to ACE (Associate Commitee on Explosives) covering the dates August 1944 to June 1945. They contain reports, previously marked 'secret' relating to wartime research and experimentation on the explosive properties of compounds. Some of the reports contain photographs tipped in; there is also a file of loose photographs and correspondence.

B1987-0025: Addresses made by George F. Rogers, an educator and Ontario Deputy Minister of Education from 1940 until his death in 1945. There are also some press clippings about his career as well as photographic portraits of Rogers. (1 box and 5 photographs, 1940-1945)

The collection consists of manuscript poems by Lampman, a bound volume with two Lampman poems presented to the College by Duncan Campbell Scott, and various autographed poems by Lampman and Scott printed on cards or in booklets and sent as Christmas cards along with Christmas greetings to "Shortt” [the Reverend Charles Harper Shortt who was a fellow student of Lampman’s at Trinity].

The collection consists of approximately 492 photographs, approximately 170 negatives and 115 index cards. The photographs in this depict life in the Royal Military College, training exercises such as building a Flying Bridge and other construction and training work in Canada and England as well as some personal photographs of Mr. Darwin and his family and friends. All of the photographs in this collecton were taken between 1930 and 1945.

Box 1-5 contain black and white photographs mounted on index cards, some with negatives attached. Box 6 contains 115 alphabetical subject index cards, 54 loose photo duplicates and 129 loose negatives.

Personal papers of Arthur Fry and his cousin, Harold. Includes U of T Student Handbooks, 1906-1910 maintained by Arthur Fry (BA 1910) as an undergraduate student in University College, diary for 1914-1915 written while in his early working career and 3 pocket notebooks with addresses, notes and expenses for 1907, 1909 and 1911. Includes one diary for Harold Fry kept during 1906-1907 describing his first job at age 16.

Collection consists of records from early conventions of the Ontario Music Teachers' Association (OMTA), primarily from the first convention, held at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto (October 6-8, 1936). Papers include programs (1936-1944); correspondence; meeting minutes; lists of registrants; scripts for speeches, including an address by Sir Ernest MacMillan at the first convention; drafts of the OMTA constitution; and proceedings (1936, 1937).

The collection consists mainly of accounts written by Dr. Alexander of his own family and of his wife's family, the Morrows and Richeys of Halifax; a few letters; a large clipping file of events from W.J. Alexander's life; some family photos.

Thomas Lahusen collection of Vasilii Azhaev’s materials includes mostly photocopies of drafts of manuscripts, articles, readers’ conferences reports, notebooks, photographs, personal correspondence as well as official documentation pertaining to Azhaev’s imprisonment and further employment in the Corrective Labor Camp of the Baikal-Amur Main Line. The collection includes photocopies of periodicals produced and disseminated within Soviet labour camps. For the most part, the collection combines material from Azhaev’s personal archives with some documents from the State Archives of the Region of Khabarovsk. Thomas Lahusen collected and used these documents when writing his manuscript, How Life Writes the Book: Real Socialism and Socialist Realism in Stalin's Russia (Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 1997). Most of the material are copies from Azhaev’s personal archive that were given to Thomas Lahusen by Irina Liubimova-Azhaeva in 1992.

World War II memoribilia preserved from a WWII scrapbook that most likely belonged to Duncan Graham of the Faculty of Medicine and that documented mainly the 15th Canadian General Hospital. Included are a few Christmas cards, photographs, typed memos, postage labels and the May 1941 Ontario Medical Association Bulletin.
This accession includes a group portrait of the 15th Canandian General Hospital taken in Toronto in Janauary 1940 with identification of many in the portait. There is also two small photos of officers and the ambulance corp at Niagara Camp, 1940.

Collection consists of three cycles of original pen on paper drawings by Margaret Bloy Graham compiled into portfolio-style binders by the artist. The drawings in Look Out Browning: the British Poets Revisited and More Victoriana are illustrations for famous British poems selected from Palgrave’s Golden Treasury, a popular anthology of Victorian poetry originally published in 1861. The drawings are numbered and correspond to an accompanying list with excerpts from the poems illustrated, totaling thirty-six poems by twelve poets including Robert Browning, Percy B. Shelley and Alfred Tennyson, among others. The cycle Pictures with Morals features darkly comedic punishments for children who make mistakes like being too curious, sledding on Sunday, not reading the Bible daily, and trespassing.

Personal records of John Gerald FitzGerald, Professor of Hygiene and Preventative Medicine at the University of Toronto and Director of the School of Hygiene and Connaught Laboratories. Records mainly consist of general correspondence with professional colleagues, 1909-1943. Correspondents include: H.J. Cody, Robert Falconer, Ernest Jones, Adolf Meyer, William Osler, and William H. Welch. Records also include congratulatory letters upon Dr. FitzGerald's appointment as University of Toronto Dean of Medicine, 1932. There is also correspondence from the Rockefeller Foundation concerning Dr. FitzGerald's involvement with the International Health Board, 1918-1938.

This collection contains sketches and notes executed by Duncan, along with related correspondence. The dates of this material are 1935-1943. The collection also includes files of correspondence, typescripts and proofs of English authors collected by Duncan. Among the writers collected include Richard Aldington, Max Beerbohm, Lord Alfred Douglas and D.H. Lawrence, among others. The date of this material is 1882-ca.1930.

B1998-0009: Correspondence and memorabilia belonging to H.A. Clark (B.A. 1895) including a letter he wrote to the editor of the Toronto Telegram discussing the role of W.L.M. King in the student strike of 1895. There is also correspondence relating to a fund raising drive by the Class of 1895 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Class. Memorabilia includes programs for various dinners including the University Centenary Dinner in 1927.

The collection consists of photos, manuscript notes and ephemera relating to Gilbert and Sullivan, and especially to the D'Oyley Carte Company across Canada in 1927. There is also some biographical material relating to J.A. McNeil.

This collection consists primarily of a long sequence of letters from Alex Colville to Helen Dow, many of which contain detailed comments on individual paintings as well as on his aesthetic and philosophical views. In addition, there is correspondence from Colville's wife, Rhoda, thanking Dow for small gifts, and from his daughter, Ann, who worked at Fischer Fine Art Ltd., in London, England, the firm handling Colville's English sales. There is also a copy of Colville's B.A. thesis.

Fonds comprises handwritten and carbon copies of the manuscripts for two books: “A Study in the Idea of God” and “Civilization in the Making.” As well, there is a Sign-List for Pre-Hammurabi Contract Tablets. There are some 100 lantern slides that Mercer was famous for using in his lectures. Some of these slides by photographer A.J. Reading show titles for the images; however there is no listing of them.

A collection of 43 original ink and wash illustrations and 26 proofs produced by the art department at Simpson's Department Store for advertising purposes. Illustrations depict common household goods, such as furniture, mattresses, and glassware which would be featured in Simpson’s catalogues, and ads in the Globe and Mail, The Evening Telegram and The Toronto Daily News. Includes illustrations made for the Royal Coronation in 1937 and the Royal visit to Toronto in 1939.
