Talk Four: We want to explore this morning the mystery of the I Am. And the transformation he wants to work in us is , I think, from I to I Am. I think of I as a center which is afraid because it is set against the rest of the world. Its trying to grasp and have things and possess God. Then what is the I Am? It is an expression of being now in the moment. I Am is potentially what I am, who is free and whole.

Side A: Conference 8, Thursday afternoon, Kevin Cullen, S.J., "Sin, brokenness, reconciliation" ; Side B: Conference 9, Friday morning, Sr. Sue Mosteller, "The way, the truth, the life"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a retreat for assistants at Morrow Park in Toronto, ON, from March 1-7, 1987.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Conf #8: I am one of those people who Sue talked about this morning when called to look at the brokenness in my relationships, I don't like that---again! I also know that once I get past that initial feeling I am glad to spend time reflecting on that reality. Conf #9: The theme today is the Truth and the Life. The text is John 15 about the vine and the branches. The question is "Who are you, Jesus?" I would like to meet him, so stay in the retreat today. Let us enter this text and see what it means for us.

Side A: Conference 3, Tuesday morning, Kevin Cullen, S.J., "To be known by God" ; Side B: Conference 4, Tuesday afternoon, Sr. Sue Mosteller, "To know God"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a retreat for assistants at Morrow Park in Toronto, ON, from March 1-7, 1987.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Conf #3: To be known by God: The questions for today is how is it that we are known by God and how do we know God? They are intimate questions about our relationship. What has led me to God and to know god? Who or what helps me to know God? Conf #4: We will go on this afternoon to deepen the theme of to know God. Back in 1968 I was searching for something and was dissatisfied. Jean came to speak in Toronto and I was touched by his talk and then that summer went to his retreat at Marylake. I share that because searching and being called is important in our lives and should not be taken for granted.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Conf #1: Theme today is Come Away and Rest. What does being on retreat mean? It means to step back and resting. Jesus invites us all to enter into this time of retreat, to come aside and rest, to waste time today with no work or decisions. Conf #2: We want to continue the theme of this morning of coming away to rest and to meet Jesus. We want to focus on how do I respond to that invitation.

We want to make progress ourselves at Daybreak in may domains which you have identified as priorities through prayer.

Jean Vanier, Conference #12

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given by Jean Vanier at an Assistants' Retreat in Erie, PA, in August 1984.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I want to share with you about another meeting with Jesus, which tells us much about him. It's the meeting of those two disciples walking to Emmaus after the resurrection. Maybe when we arrived at this retreat we had in our hearts the sentiments which must have been in the hearts of these two disciples. They had put so much hope in Jesus, that he would liberate Israel. Many people in our world are disillusioned. Their expectations have collapsed. We too can feel cheated by community because it wasn't what we expected.

Jean Vanier, Conference #11

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given by Jean Vanier at an Assistants' Retreat in Erie, PA, in August 1984.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: One of the sufferings of our communities is littleness. When we welcome people with all their fragility and wounds, there are no miracle cures. Our life is made up of very little things. Jean goes on to share about L'Arche in India.

Jean Vanier, Conference #9

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given by Jean Vanier at an Assistants' Retreat in Erie, PA, in August 1984.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: The only thing that is important is that we meet Jesus and that we live the experience of covenant with him, which liberates, confirms us and helps us to understand the extraordinary tenderness of our God. During a retreat it's important to waste time with Jesus so that he can reveal himself to us in the silence. This afternoon I want to talk about another encounter in the gospel of John between Jesus and another woman, the one accused of adultery.

Jean Vanier, Conference #8

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given by Jean Vanier at an Assistants' Retreat in Erie, PA, in August 1984.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: The specific gift of Jesus to humanity is forgiveness. Forgiveness is essentially returning to the covenant, a recognition that we are made one for the other and called to give life to one another, that we belong to each other. We are there for Jesus and he is there for us. "Whatever you ask for in my name, the Father will give you". What do you ask? What is your yearning and what is your thirst? Is your asking coming from the depths of your being?

L'Arche is a struggle for liberation as the tendency of the world is to crush weak people. Our world seeks comfort, power and success.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Side Two starts with feedback from small group sharing. Then Jean speaks: How can we learn to comfort ourselves? We can always say that the fault is over there because there is no one comforting me. We have to discover how we comfort ourselves or how do we let the spirit of God comfort us. You have experiences of this when you had to call on your own resources. The answer somewhere is about prayer. Prayer is learning to comfort and shepherd ourselves or be shepherded by Jesus.

John Kavanaugh, "Flight from Person"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Scotland in 1986.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Talk One: What I am reflecting on is basically a flight from personhood, the fear of personhood. It's a fear of our humanity and a fear of God. We run away from what it means to be a person, capable of self-gift. It takes many different forms. One is a loss of interiority and the fragmentation of self. Talk Two: We have a lot of excuses for not responding to our world. It's all of us. We know it but ignore it. We won't acknowledge our need to change.

Leonard Doohan, "Lukan Spirituality" #8

Evening talk

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given by Jean Vanier on October 20, 1990, most likely during a retreat for Assistants at l'Arche Daybreak.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: There are many different types of loss. I think of David who lost his mother or John who lost his work. We talked before about the death of Bill & Frank. And there is the loss of assistants. Why do they leave? Then there is the losses which are more subtle, like the loss of self-image or self esteem.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a retreat for assistants at Morrow Park in Toronto, ON, from March 1-7, 1987.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Conf #6: The call is personal to each one of us . We must be quiet to hear it. It is usually simple and gentle, but it can cause fear in us. What is the cost being asked of me? Conf #7: The theme is sin, brokenness and reconciliation. When I thin of my sinfulness, the first feeling that comes to me is fear. Yet Jesus often says "Don't be afraid." But we often flee from any pain.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: When we look at the Gospels one thing that is very clear is that God responds to our thirst. "Those who are thirsty, come to me to drink." In our lives we have to enter the dessert to learn about our thirst. I encourage you to penetrate into the dessert so that our souls thirst for God.
