Collection consists of audiovisual materials featuring recordings of events given by and used by members of l'Arche International/Internationale. The majority of the audio files feature Jean Vanier, usually speaking at retreats. The film reels are recordings made and collected by L'Arche Daybreak, and feature a CBC film on Daybreak (from 1970), pilgramages and trips made by Faith and Light and Daybreak. There is also a film reel of Jean Vanier.

September 1985 Weekend

File consists of 3 audio cassettes featuring talks given by Joe Egan and Robert Larouche at the annual weekend for l'Arche Daybreak assistants in September 1985.

L'Arche Renewal 1988

Joe Egan, "Authority" (part 2) - August 23, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Yesterday we shared about the Christian vision of authority and the opportunity to share in groups our own personal experience. Today we will look at authority in L'Arche today. Authority is a fundamental question for our communities and always will be . How we exercise authority in L'Arche is an important factor in the health, radiance and growth of our communities or when they fall into crisis. We have had the experience of both in our history. This teaches us that this issue of authority is very important.

Joe Egan, "Authority" (part 1) - August 22, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I am happy to be here, even though I am the last speaker of the Renewal. The theme for our 2 days is authority. It is a fundamental reality in all of our lives and of our communities. We all had the experience of living under the authority of others, whether, parents, teachers, boss or society in general. Also, how do we best exercise authority in our communities of L'Arche? So how do we live well under authority of others and how do we exercise it well ourselves? What is the Christian vision of authority in the gospels?

Labour Day Weekend

File consists of 2 audio cassettes featuring talks given by Joe Egan, Ken Gavin, and Sr. Sue Mosteller to assistants at l'Arche Daybreak over Labour Day Weekend in September 1983.

Claire de Miribel and Joe Egan, "La Federation aujourd'hui" ["The Federation now"] - in French and English

Item consists of 1 audio cassette from the 1987 International Federation of l'Arche meeting in Rome.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Joe speaks in English first and then Claire in French. The U.N, has declared this as the Year of the Homeless Person. I think this is significant for us. Our call in LArche is obviously to welcome people and create a home with them. Yet millions in our world do not have a home yet. We know in every society where LArche is located that many people have been pushed to the margins.

Federation 1993

Talk by Joe Egan

File consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk by Joe Egan to the Daybreak assistants in August 1982.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: This morning I want to reflect with you what has touched me in this past year in the hope this will give us a clear sense of our future vision. We have had a very full year. Many signs have been given to us to encourage us.

Our call as assistants

File consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk by Joe Egan to assistants titled "Our call as assistants". This talk was given in September 1981.

Joe Egan, "Family" - July 23, 1992

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 25 - August 20, 1992, in England.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: It's obvious to say that I'm not an expert on families. All of us here have something to say about family. We all grew up in a family and now some of us are struggling to raise our own families in a good way. Family is one of the most important gifts we have received. It is the basic unit of society and of the church. What happens in families has a big impact on all of us. I would like to start with the gift of families.

Covenant Journey 1989

File consists of 17 audio cassettes featuring talks given at a Covenant Journey Retreat in 1989. There are varying speakers and titles. The talks were given in French, but have been translated into English.

Joe Egan, "Talk to Assistants"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given by Joe Egan and Robert Larouche at the annual weekend for l'Arche Daybreak assistants in September 1985.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I want to start by thanking Robert Larouche, our Zone Coordinator, for your visit. Thank you for nourishing and affirming us as a community. You spoke the truth, a truth that comes out of what you live in Haiti. I want to deepen some more the two challenges that you talked about yesterday. The interior challenge of how we live well the community life we are called to. But also the exterior challenge of what is our call as a L'Arche community in our culture.

Joe Egan, "Vision talk"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given to assistants at l'Arche Daybreak over Labour Day Weekend in September 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: "Unless a grain of wheat falls on the ground and dies, it remains a single grain. But if it dies it yields a large harvest..If anyone serves me, my Father will honor them." There is something important about our way of life that makes it essential that I announce our vision. I picked this reading because it is the essence of what we are called to live as L'Arche and L'Arche's call in the world. The parable about the grain is radically different from what our world tells us about where we will find life.

January 22, 1980, Joe Egan, "Sexuality"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Renewal event for l'Arche Daybreak assistants.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I want to share this morning on the theme of sexuality from the renewal last summer which had a number of speakers on this topic, especially Jean Vanier, who spoke about Christian sexuality and living community together as men and women. Jean started with the basics which means going back to the relationship between mother and child.
