Postmortem documents

Series consists of documents created after Leslie Bell's death, including letters of condolence written to his wife Leona Bell; copies of his obituaries; and, documents pertaining to the Leslie Bell Scholarship, which was established in his name by the Leslie Bell Singers Alumnae in 1971. The award was created to support choral conductors further their professional careers and enhance their conducting abilities. The award is managed by the Ontario Arts Council (OAC).

Publicity, correspondence, and various other documents

Series consists of newspaper articles by and about Leslie Bell, concert programs, scrapbooks, documents from the Canadian Music Educators' Association (CMEA), and photographs. Bell wrote a column for the Toronto Star from 1950 until 1961, and many of his columns are included in this series. The CMEA documents are included as Bell was a founder of the association and its executive director from 1959 until his death in 1962. He also edited the Canadian Music Educator journal during that time. The series also contains a file of correspondence, photographs, and certificates for Bell's son L. Richard Bell.

Radio scripts, indexes, and notes

Series consists of radio scripts and notes for programs written by Leslie R. Bell in his role as a radio commentator for CBC and CFRB in Toronto. The series also contains indices that accompany many of these scripts for Bell's programs, including Audio, Speaking of music, Music about town, and Music won't hurt you. The series also contains notes from Bell's research for radio programs, lectures, and from his school days, including his notes for his thesis on art education.

Slides

Series consists of paper copies of slides used by Dr. Mustard in his various presentations. These printouts were kept in binders, organized by year, with each slide assigned a particular number. These binders were presumably used as a reference for assembling a slide show for various presentations. For the years 1996-1999, the slides are digital files only.

Series also consists of digital Power Point Presentation (.ppt) versions of these files, 1989-2005.

Travel files

Series consists of records relating to Dr. Mustard’s attendance and participation in various events across the world, including meetings, conferences, visits with community groups, presentations, convocations, and other special events. Files consist of correspondence, itineraries, meeting notes, reports, brochures, proceedings, lists of attendees, and news coverage of the event. In some cases, a copy of the presentation is also included.

In cases where files document Dr. Mustard’s visits to small communities and early childhood development organizations, files also contain information on the host group and region, including brochures, information packages and news clippings relating to issues in that particular community (such as health, poverty, and child care).

Series also consists of digital files, containing PowerPoint presentations (.ppt) for particular talks and speeches, 2003-2005.

Teaching

This series consists of course files that can contain lectures, course outlines, assignments, and reading lists. It documents Prof. Armatage’s approach to the teaching of both Women’s Studies and Cinema Studies in the early years as they were emerging into disciplines of study and research.

Files in B2005-0020 focus on teaching in the 1970s. For these early courses, except for INI 112Y Introduction to Cinema Studies and NEW 260Y Introduction to Women’s Studies, all courses were developed and taught solely by Prof. Armatage.

Files in B2009-0020 relate exclusively to courses she taught in Cinema Studies from 1990-2007. This accession also contains subject files used for course lectures, covering various topics in film studies. These files contain lecture notes and outlines to lectures and are arranged alphabetically by topic.

Files in B2012-0002 focus on two courses she taught in Cinema Studies from 2006-2010, INI 323 Feminist Approaches to Cinema and INI 484 International Film Festivals. This accession also contains several subject files used for course lectures, covering various topics in film studies. These files contain lecture notes as well as teaching resources published by the British Film Institute, and are arranged alphabetically by topic.

Assessments and letters of recommendation

These files contain comments by Prof. Armatage on students’ essays and assignments. These are fairly extensive and document her approach to teaching her subject matter. Files are arranged by course number. Also included are three files of letters of recommendation for students and colleagues filed chronologically.

Notebooks

Notebooks contain mainly analysis of films reviewed by Prof. Armatage in her capacity as a programmer and curator of the Toronto International Film Festival. There are also some notes relating to meetings and appointments. The notebook in B2012-0002 is largely related to her administrative activities at Innis College between 2010 and 2011.

Publishing and talks

This series documents a small selection of academic papers and talks published or given by Prof. Armatage throughout her career. Files can contain edited typescripts, correspondence, e-mail and readers’ reports. There are two files of her published reviews and a file with copies of some of her magazine contributions. Additionally, there are records relating to her book The Girl From God’s Country: Nell Shipman and the Silent Cinema (University of Toronto Press, 2003). These include research notes, correspondence and a copy of the manuscript.

Professional activities

This series documents various professional activities and research including participation in conferences, film festivals and screenings, and particularly Prof. Armatage’s work within the Major Collaborative Research Initiatives Program. The series includes her correspondence with a small number of notable women filmmakers, including Dorothy Arzner and Tracey Moffatt, as well as posters, programs, and pamphlets on women and cinema collected over the course of her professional career. There is also one file relating to her time teaching in Japan in 2002.

General files

Series consists of more than 16 000 letters received by Henri Nouwen between 1964 and 1997. Some files include photographs and other printed material sent to Nouwen as enclosures. In some instances, a copy of Nouwen's typed letter of reply is also included in the file.

Photographs

Series contains photographs collected, maintained, and/or accumulated by Kathleen Parlow. Photographs depict Kathleen Parlow's life, musical career (including photographs of the Parlow Strong Quartet), and travels to various places including Hawaii and Asia. Also includes photographs of various individuals including but not limited to: Kathleen Parlow; Minnie Parlow; Leopold Auer; Thomas Edison; Arthur Hinton; Harold Bauer; Samuel Gilbert Colt; Willen Willeke; Johan Halvorsen; Henry Scheadieck; Erich Wolff; Ernesto Consolo; Wanda De Stein; Mischa Elman; Marie Hall; and, Jascha Heifetz.

Audio and video recordings

Series consists of audio and video recordings of performances by Ron Collier and of compositions and arrangements by Collier. The series includes audio cassettes from the Duke Ellington Society that were issued to its members; audio recordings of Collier's lectures on Ellington at Humber College (1980s); performances by the Ron Collier Quintet and the Ron Collier Tentet; and records from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) radio transcription service of performances by Collier, his groups, and his compositions and arrangements.

Organizational records

Records document the foundation's mandate, activities, and history. They include the foundation's logo creation, "foundational statement", historic timeline, press cuttings, and newsletters.

Publications

This series includes two books written by Gila Margolin, "The Moving Swan" (2006), and "Where the Woods Meet the Water" (2014). There is one copy of the former and three copies of the latter, one in French ("La où les bois côtoient l'eau").

Gila Margolin, personal

This series is divided into two main categories:

The first contains copies of Gila Margolin's family tree (Margolin and Bergson), as well as a copy of a family photograph.

The second contains ephemera from Margolin's travels (brochures, tickets, a tote), and correspondence.

Concerts and Events

This series is divided into two main categories:

The first contains audio recordings of Gila Margolin's concerts, music sheets and lyrics from her performances, and an audio recording by Jeffrey Houghton which depicts the origins of The Little Sisters of Joy.

The second contains promotional materials from events, mainly concerts and book launches. In many cases, concerts are given in the framework of book launches.

Photographs

Photographs document Gila Margolin's travels, friends, family, and concert performances.

Records related to real estate

Series consists of correspondence, leases and other legal agreements, court documents, surveys, deeds, mortgage records, sketches, financial and other records, 1871-2009, relating to the administering of properties owned by Victoria and not used for academic purposes, and for maintaining Victoria's interest in property developments which affected the University. The records relate to insurance, including liability, and the planning and development, management and leasing, acquisition and sales of property, taxes, property disputes and litigation.

The architectural plans and drawings have been separated into Sub-Series 1.

The Bursar's responsibilities with regard to property were initially the insurance of buildings and their contents. However, as the
need for regular income became more urgent and evident, and as the University expanded and required more buildings, the Bursar's work likewise increased. The Bursar became responsible for the legal negotiations and accounting over purchases, sales and leases; and the supervision and funding of alterations and renovations and the construction of new buildings. Along with this the Bursar dealt with property tax as the University was only exempt from this in respect to its property used for academic purposes.

Concerts

Series consists of materials produced by the Aldeburgh Connection for each of their concerts, including the Sunday Afternoon Concert Series, held at Walter Hall, Faculty of Music, University of Toronto (1982-2013); the Recital Series at the Glenn Gould Studio, Toronto (1993-2013); the Discovery Series (also called the Young Artists Series), held at Walter Hall (1998-2011); the Bayfield Festival of Song (2007-2012); and various concerts performed on tour in North America and Great Britain. Each file contains the records created and used in the production of the concert, including promotional materials (programs, posters, and pamphlets); correspondence with musicians, sponsors, and venues; newspaper clippings of concert reviews; contracts with performers and venues; research notes; narrative scripts for the Sunday Afternoon Concert Series; scores annotated by Stephen Ralls and Bruce Ubukata; arrangements and transpositions of songs; stage, set, and lighting designs; subscriber lists; and ticket sales records.

Recording projects

Series consists of correspondence, rehearsal schedules, recording take lists, budgets, and research notes, regarding the production of the Aldeburgh Connection’s recording projects, including one cassette and six compact discs. The albums include recordings from various Aldeburgh Connection concerts, recordings with musicians featured in these concerts, and recordings of compositions commissioned by the Aldeburgh Connection.

Promotional events and free concerts

Series consists of records pertaining to various promotional events and free concerts produced by the Aldeburgh Connection. The series includes materials for one concert by Stephen Ralls and Bruce Ubukata prior to the official formation of the Aldeburgh Connection concert series, “Opera in the Drawing Room” (January 14, 1979). Each file consists of programs, scripts, scores annotated by Ralls and Ubukata, set and lighting designs, posters, and reviews.

Governance and finance records

Series consists of the administrative and financial records of the Aldeburgh Connection, including newsletters; correspondence regarding private donations, corporate funding, and government grants; financial ledgers and budgets; and, board minutes. As a registered charity, the Aldeburgh Connection was dependent upon donations, funding, and grants, in addition to revenue from ticket sales, to support each concert season. Donations after the end of the Aldeburgh Connection concerts in 2013 were given in support of the organization’s archival project, which included the creation of an online archive of sound recordings, digitized programs, and a database of their performance repertoire. The series also includes the letters of incorporation for “The Aldeburgh Connection Concert Society” and early promotional material used to obtain funding.

Classical scores

Series contains various classical scores and parts, many of which were arranged and/or composed by Doug Riley.

B3 quartet projects

Series contains sheet music and set lists relating to projects of the B3 Quartet from years 1980-1998.

Compositions and arrangements

Series consists of some original compositions and many arrangements by Leslie Bell, predominantly for choral ensemble, with some scores and parts for band or orchestra.

Performance, teaching, and personal records

Series consists of records relating to Ron Collier's performance career, including photographs from his time in the Kitsilano Boys' Band in Vancouver; correspondence with various musicians; photographs of his own quartet/quintet/dixtuor/ big band; and, photographs, correspondence, and other records from Collier's collaborations with Duke Ellington. Series also contains lecture notes and other materials relating to his teaching career at Humber College, where he taught composition and arranging (1974-1994). Series also contains some personal and family photographs, scrapbooks, and correspondence.

Compositions and arrangements

Series consists of Ron Collier’s arrangements and original compositions, mostly written for various jazz formations and big band. The series includes manuscript scores, parts, and some sketches for Collier's compositions and arrangements.

Correspondence and programs

Series consists of correspondence with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), Canadian Music Centre (CMC), Canada Council, Ontario Arts Council, performers, representatives of performing organizations, friends, and colleagues. The series also contains programs, Polish community activities, press notices and reviews, and notebooks and journals.

Compositions

Series consists of manuscript music and scores for Buczynski's radio music and children's pieces.

Series consists of materials relating to music education in Toronto, including at the Toronto Conservatory of Music and the Toronto College of Music.
