B2000-0017: Correspondence and programs of annual meetings of the Janes Surgical Society. This surgical fellowship was established in 1954 by surgeons who were residents under the tenure of Robert Meredith Janes, Chairman of the Department of Surgery from 1947-1957. There is also a brief history of the society as well as photos of Dr. and Mrs Janes and a group photo of the Gallie - Janes Course, 1950-51. (1 box, 1950-[199-])

Records document Milton Israel’s graduate studies at University of Michigan, and his publishing, teaching and research activities as Professor of South Asian Studies in the Department of History at the University of Toronto. The records relating to his graduate studies consist of research notes and some footnote drafts for his doctoral thesis “The Anglo-Indian in defense of authority, 1905-1910”.

A significant portion of the B2002-0009 accession documents his research and teaching activities relating to South Asian settlement and migration during the 1990s and includes course materials for HIST 394, a course he developed on this topic. In addition there is correspondence and reports relating to the Sikh Studies program in the Department for the Study of Religion developed at the time he was Director for the Centre for South Asian Studies.

The B2011-0004 accession contributes significantly to his research and teaching activities, including course materials and lecture notes for HIS 101, HUM 101, HIS 232, HIS 282, HIS 364 and HIS 394, relating to British colonialism, the history of India and particularly modern India, and South Asian civilization and migration. Also included are several popular lectures and seminars that Professor Israel gave over the course of his career.

Records documenting his publication activities in Series 4 focus on primarily three projects: his book In the future soil: a social history of the Indo-Canadians in Ontario (1994), his work on Encyclopedia of Canada’s Peoples (1999) while he was Chair of the Multicultural History Society of Ontario and “Safe Haven. The refugee experience of five families”, a book and exhibition produced in cooperation with the Royal Ontario Museum. Accession B2011-0004 also includes notes and correspondence regarding several published reviews and articles by Professor Israel, as well as reviews of these key publications.

An earlier accession (B1995-0052) is represented in Series 6, and includes correspondence, research material, notes and card files relating to, with drafts of, Milton Israel's book, "Communications and Power: propaganda and the press in the Indian Nationalist Struggle, 1920-1947" (1994).

Collection consists of typescripts, with editorial revisions and instructions to the printer in the manuscript, for Paton's book Factors in the Ruin of Antiquity: A Criticism of Ancient Civilization.

B1985-0020: The records consist of: a marriage certificate of James Isaac's maternal grandmother (1855); Isaac's certificates in religious instruction and public education; graduation diplomas (BA 1917 (University College) and MA (University of Toronto) and AM and PhD (Harvard); and membership in the Masons (1923).

B1992-0004: Included are: James Paton Isaac's copy of his graduating class in Arts photograph, 1917; photograph of Canadian Officers Training Corps military training in front of University College, 1918; and one copy of Torontonensis 1917.

Fonds documents Allan Irving’s activities from 1976 to 1998 as a doctoral candidate at the University of Toronto Faculty of Social Work; as lecturer and/or professor at King’s College (University of Western Ontario), at the Faculty of Social Work (University of Toronto), at the Nipissing College (Laurentian University) and Wilfrid Laurier University. It also partially documents his other professional and scholarly activities, publications and writings, lectures and addresses from 1978 to 1999.

Tape of Prof. Douglas Pimlott's remarks concerning wolf group studies at the time he turned the chairmanship of the Wolf Specialist Group of the Survival Service Commission, a branch of the International Union of Conservation of Nature.

Fonds consists of the records of Prof. Eleanor Cook, including files relating to her early education, teaching, research and correspondence. Records include report cards, employment records, lecture notes, course syllabi and assignments, grants, addresses and talks, publication records, and personal and professional correspondence, including that with Northrop Frye and Alastair Fowler, Regius Professor of Rhetoric and English Literature at the University of Edinburgh.

This fonds contains 72 accessions of records from Hart House, including the records of various clubs and groups. See accession-level descriptions for details.

This fonds contains the personal papers of Prof. Fritz Moritz Heichelheim, mainly while professor of classics at the University of Toronto (1948-1968) and in academic positions at Universities in Britain such as Cambridge and Nottingham University.

The largest series (Series 1) contains correspondence spanning 46 years received from friends, family and colleagues living in North America as well as Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Correspondence is in mostly English and German depending on the language of the writer. Some of Prof. Heichelheim’s outgoing replies will be found scrawled on the back of the incoming letter or as a separate documents. The completeness of this series documents Prof. Heichelheim’s wide interest in classical studies, numismatics and papyri translation. Other series document some of his teaching and research activities, mainly at universities in England as well as his literary works on Roman and Greek history also in both English and German. No manuscripts for his major books such as his published thesis in the 1930’s or his collaborative works such as A history of the Roman people (1962) with C. A. Yeo have been found.

His extensive work in numismatics however will be found in Series 5. This series contains the manuscript and photographs for his catalogue Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum Vol. IV of the General and Leake Collections at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge produced mainly during the late 1930’s to the 1950s. Records in this series provide some documentation on the joint project of University of Toronto and Heichelheim’s previous employer, the University of Giessen in Germany. This project directed by Prof. Heichelheim during the 1950s dealt with the translation and publication of the Giessen papyrus and ostraka (handwriting on pottery).

Fonds consists of biographical and personal records, family and professional correspondence, tributes, field notes, interviews, research notes, subject notes, unpublished and published manuscripts including versions of "History of Communication" manuscript. Correspondence, briefs, reports and other material relating to the Nova Scotia Royal Commission on Provincial Economic Inquiry, 1934, and assembled by Harold Adams Innis who was a member of the Commission. This fonds contains the personal and professional papers of Dr. Helen Sawyer Hogg documenting her contribution to professional astronomy, her high regard as a popular educator as well as her responsibilities as a parent, daughter, wife and friend. The records have been arranged into series either by type of record or to reflect a certain type of activity. Records documenting various aspects of her career are filed first, followed by papers reflecting her personal life.

Included is both professional and personal correspondence; records relating to her activities on associations, boards and organizations; records such as draft manuscripts, correspondence and outlines and data relating to her publishing activities and research; papers relating to her education and her teaching responsibilities; as well as diaries and family papers series.

Because Dr. Hogg's career spanned nearly seven decades during a time astronomy as a discipline was still developing both nationally and internationally, these records are not only useful to those researching Dr. Hogg's achievements but will be insightful to those researchers studying the development of astronomy as a science and profession. Moreover, Dr. Hogg was a woman in a field of science, which is still dominated by men. Those studying women's history may find Dr. Hogg's personal records a useful case study in one woman's success in a largely male dominated profession.

Contained within the Helen S. Hogg personal records are three sous-fonds: Frank S. Hogg [1922-1952], her first husband and also an astronomer at the David Dunlap Observatory; Prof. Ruth Northcott [1932-1969], close personal friend and professional colleague of Helen Hogg, also on staff at the D.D.O.; Dr. C.A. Chant [193- - 194-], director emeritus of the D.D.O and head of the Department of Astronomy at the University of Toronto from 1904-1935. These sous-fonds are individually described and have been filed after the Helen Hogg personal records.

Fonds consists of records documenting the career of Irvine Glass as a specialist in shock waves, a professor and administrator at the Institute for Aerospace Studies and his personal interest in the Jewish peoples through his involvement, in particular, with Canadian Professors for Peace in the Middle East, the Committee of Concerned Scientists, and the Sino-Judaic Institute.

B2003-0023 (7 boxes, 1892-1921): This accession documents the short life of Gerald Edward Blake from his birth in 1892, his education at Ridley College and the University of Toronto, to his death on the battlefields of France during World War I in 1916. Series 1 and 3 contain his diaries and correspondence to family members in which he describes his experiences at school, his trips to Britain and France in 1913 and most significantly, his 13 months of service during World War I. The majority of his letters are to his mother during his months overseas, but there are also letters to his sisters, Margaret (1893-1963), Constance (1896-1979) and his brother, Verschoyle (1899-1971). Some of these letters are attached to typescript copies, prepared by his brother Verschoyle prior to 1971. Capt. Blake also sent postcards annotated by him which provide a photographic record of British army life in camp, as well as official coloured war service postcards of the British army in action. Other postcards of street scenes in France and Britain helped to illustrate the places he had been including the town of Pozières near which he was killed in 1916 (Series 5). Other war records include his military orders and notes while at the front, and his copy of active service bible. Correspondence and photographs also document his close friendship with his cousins Hume Wrong (1894 – 1954; BA 1915) and Harold Wrong (b.1891; BA 1913), who was also killed in action in July 1916. After Gerald’s death, Hume Wrong assisted Mrs. Blake in making arrangements for her son’s grave site in France and sent home photographs of the cemetery which he visited in 1920-1921 (Series 5). In addition, Mrs. Blake received other remembrances of her son’s service such as a commemorative medal from the British Army, a copy of the history of his battalion’s service in the War and a copy of Volume II of the British Roll of Honour (Series 4).

B2004-0028 (2 files, 1902-1914): Original diploma of Gerald Blake awarded for Bachelor of Arts degree, University of Toronto, 1914; photocopies of letters from Gerald Blake's father, Edward Francis Blake, to administrators at schools (St. Andrews College, and Ridley College) attended by Gerald Blake, 1902-1904. (Photocopies are from original letterbook of E.F. Blake to be given to the Archives of Ontario).

Memorabilia including programmes, snapshots, group portraits, clippings documenting two graduates of the class of 1941 who later married: Shirley Hill, UC (Law) and James Warner Eakins, BASc (Civil). Of interest are a set of napkins embroidered for Shirley Hill by her mother Gladys Legge (B.A. 1914) for her graduation and several graduation snapshots of her and her classmates, all law students. There is a few documents on class reunions, 1941 programs for U.C. Follies and Skule Nite, as well as a May 1939 Presentation of Colours program.

Consists of the records of Dr. Thomas Hull documenting his career in applied mathematics and computer science. Includes correspondence and printed E-mail messages, talks, manuscripts of articles, research notes, reviews and recommendations, teaching files and professional association files. Dr. Hull was also a student of the well known mathematician, Leopold Infeld at the time of his resignation from the University of Toronto; there are some copies of correspondence between Hull and Infeld. Also included is Dr. Hull's collection of photographs which he took documenting various events of the Arts and Letters Club 1981-1996.

Notably missing are significant records relating to his role as a key administrator in the Department of Computer Science, his career as an influential educator and any records documenting his time at the University of British Columbia and at the University of Toronto as a student in the 1940s.

B2008-0018: Two photographs documenting William J. Houston, student in the Faculty of Education in 1913 and later a graduate of Arts (B.A. 1924). The two group portraits include the Faculty of Education Literary Executive , Fall term 1913 and an unidentified Faculty of Education sports team (possibly soccer).

B2013-0028: Portraits of William J. Houston, student in the Faculty of Education in 1913 and later a graduate of Arts (B.A. 1924) in World War I uniform. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the 170th Canadian Infantry Battalion and subsequently in active service in France in 1918.

Consists of transcripts and tapes of interviews with individuals working at the University of Toronto Press. The interviews were arranged by Prof. Victor Hoar of the University of Western Ontario, who had a grant to carry out an "oral history" project concerning academic publishing in Canada. Dr. Hoar later changed his surname to Howard. The tapes and transcripts were transferred to the Archives in 1979, with the intention of adding them to the Archives' own oral history collection.

Box 1 contains transcripts of interviews with Harold Bohne, Miss Cragg (now Mrs. D. Sutherland), ___ Fanning, Allan Fleming, J.G. Garden, Roy Gurney, and Eleanor Harmon.

Box 2 contains transcripts of interviews with D. Hayne, Marshall Jeanneret, Hillary Marshall, Ian Montagnes, and B. Plewman.

There are also audiotapes of the recordings for Cragg, Fleming, Garden, Garvey, Hayne, Jeanneret, Montagnes, and Plowman. There is also an audiotape of an interview with Francess Halpenny, for which there is no transcript.

Included in this accession are the personal bound letter books belonging to educator, journalist and graduate of the University of Toronto William Houston. The two bound volumes date from Dec. 31 1883 to June 13 1891 and from July 6 1891 to Nov. 8 1895. The correspondence covers the period that Houston was a member of the University of Toronto Senate and Legislative Librarian. Also included are notes on Houston family history compiled by Mrs. Eila Hopper-Ross, grand niece of William Houston (ca. 1980s - 2000).

Fonds also includes 2 photographs: a portrait of William Houston ca. 1923 and a photograph of John Houston standing in front of the family home in Waterdorwn, 1937.

Also includes one piece of correspondence from John Houston to "cousin" Theresa McAfee (1935).

Consists of records such as programmes, correspondence and memorabilia as well photographs, pins and medals document Charles Higginbottom's involvement in various sports organizations including: City of Toronto Sports Recognition Committee, 1931-1941; Toronto Centennial Committee, 1934; Toronto Hockey League and Toronto Amateur Hockey Association, 1925-1940; Central YMCA Sports Forum 1945; Toronto Police Amateur Athletic Association 1942-1960; Lord Dufferin School Old Boys Association , 1924-1960; St Augustine’s Men’s Club 1914-1928, Beaches Hockey League 1915-1916; Scarborough Golf and Country Club, 1928; Amateur Athletic Union of Canada, 1929-1931, Canadian Olympic Committee Centre 1939, National Boxing Committee, 1940.

Fonds also contains memorabilia and photographs documenting Higginbottom’s attendance as an official at the 1930 British Empire Games, the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles and the 1936 Olympics in Berlin.

Finally, there are also some records relating to his role as Bursar of the University of Toronto including some 1946 financial reports.

Consists of files containing correspondence, reports, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, newsletters and periodicals, dealing with university discipline, the library crisis, Berkeley student protests, the 1971 University of Toronto Act, women's liberation, daycare, SAC, Glendon Forum, unemployment, student aid, Canadian Union of Students, drugs, and other student and education-related topics.

Fonds consists of correspondence, research notes, articles, and subject files on various organizations, conferences, committees, and corporations, as well as the School of Social Work, for which Hendry was Director from 1951-1969.
