Administrative thesis material

File consists of a blank form to apply for a thesis (with spaces for a title and supervisors); a thesis proposal typed on Prof. Dr. J.J.G. Prick's letterhead including a summary of the paper, but this is likely a draft as there are a few typographical errors; a draft for a doctoral thesis proposal with annotations and corrections by Nouwen; a letter from the Social Sciences Faculty at University of Nijmegen written by the Dean of Faculty, O. Schreuder, which outlines Nouwen's Thesis director (Professor Prick), the title of the thesis (De betekenis van Anton T. Boisen's acute psychose in verband met zijn vraag naar de verhouding tussen geestesziekte en religieuze bekering [The significance of Anton T. Boisen's acute psychosis related to his question about the relationship between mental illness and religious conversion]). The letter goes on to say the thesis defense date has yet to be set, and the committee will consist of Dr. W.J. Berger (Pastoral Psychology), Prof. Dr. K.J.M. van de Loo (Clinical Psychology), and Prof. Dr. F. Haarsma (Pastoral Theologian).
File also includes a letter to Nouwen regarding his request for the appointment of a thesis director for his PhD. They sent him a candidate's guideline for a PhD thesis.

Notes on "Naming the Whirlwind"

File consists of Nouwen's notes on a book by Langdon Gilkey titled "Naming the Whirlwind: The renewal of God language" (published in 1969). Nouwen also refers to the book as "Making the Whirlwind." Nouwen summarizes the book in his notes. Nouwen summarizes Gilkey's writing on Anton T. Boisen, Russell Dicks, Richard Cabot, and Caroll Wise on page 54, and Seward Hiltner and Thomas Klink on page 55 of his notes.

Een Functionele Godsdienstpsychologie

File consists of a hard bound translation of P.W. Pruyser’s "A Dynamic Psychology of Religion" (New York, 1968) by Nouwen and J. Wissink. It is possible that this translation was done in preparation for, or during, Nouwen’s doctoral studies in 1970-1971.

Boisen - Miscellaneous manuscripts and outlines

File consists of copies of manuscripts of articles, speeches and a blank case analysis form from 1934 - 1957. File also contains a copy of an unidentified manuscript, pages 39 to 94, and Boisen's Curriculum Vitae.

Boisen - Articles 1960 – 1961, n.d.

File consists of articles by Anton T. Boisen written between 1960 and 1961, and undated articles, collected by Nouwen at an unknown time. Many of the articles are original printed versions. The articles are arranged chronologically by year of publication.

File consists of copies of two book reviews of "The Exploration of the Inner World" by Anton T. Boisen, dated from 1937 and 1938.

Anton T. Boisen

File consists of a copy of a dissertation entitled, "Anton T. Boisen: De ontwikkeling van zijn persoon en werk" by Harry Stroeken, written in 1977. [Translation of thesis title page: Anton Boisen "The development of his person and work", Catholic university of Leuven (Belgium), Faculty of Psychology and Pedagogical Sciences. PhD thesis, Presented to obtain a PhD in Psychology by Harry Stroeken under supervision of Prof. Dr. A Vergote].

Report cards

File consists of one report card and two honour cards. The report card is for the school year 1948 - 1949 at St. Aloysius College, Nouwen's Gymnasium. This report card includes a certificate of honourable mention from July 1949 in the subjects Religion, Dutch, and Geography. The two honour cards are from the school year of 1944 - 1945 (Nouwen's first year at Gymnasium) for Nouwen having earned first place in his class in a subject. The first card recognizes Nouwen for Latin, and the second card for an unknown subject [Bijbljesch?].

File consists of 34 typed 13 x 20 flash cards summarizing the material Nouwen collected on Merton, flash cards are in English. File also includes two typed summaries, in Dutch, of "Love and Solitude" and "The Monastic Theology of St. Aelred" as well as two black and white prints of Merton from 1941 and 1968.

Collected circus materials

File consists of a variety of materials related to the circus. Includes book lists in Dutch, sketches, a print price list, a copy of an excerpt from the book ‘A second birthday’ by William Stringfellow referring to the circus and a postcard picturing The Flying Rodleighs in action. The postcard is a promotion of the 1995/96 Wereld Sterren Circus. The file also consists of a long typed letter to The Flying Rodleighs from Nouwen dated May 14, 1991.

Circus decoupage

File consists of individual circus colour prints cut from a larger piece of paper, possibly wrapping paper, and glued to 8.5 x 11 sheets of white paper. File also includes a section of the larger paper the individual prints were taken from.

Circus programmes

File consists of six circus programmes dating from about 1993 to 1996. Three of the programmes are in German, two from ‘Circus Barum’ (ca. 1993 and ca. 1996) and one from ‘Der Grosse Asiatiche Circus’ (ca. 1993), three programmes are in Dutch from ‘Kerstcircus Ahoy 1994/1995’, ‘Wereld Sterren Circus 1995/1996’ and 'Circus Carré 1995'.

Materials about the trapeze by Steve Gossard

File consists of two versions of “A reckless era of aerial performance: The evolution of trapeze” a self-published book by Steve Gossard on the trapeze. The first book was printed in 1991 and bears an inscription to Nouwen from Gossard and the second is printed in 1994. Both books contain the article “Frank and the great leapers” by Gossard, published in Bandwagon, July/August 1990.

Interview typescript with Jon Griggs

File consists of an unbound copy of the typescript of the interview with Jon Griggs, catcher for The Flying Rodleighs, by Nouwen which occurred in November of 1991 in Kassel. Throughout this typescript Jon's name was incorrectly transcribed as John.

Interview typescript with Karlene Stevens

File consists of an unbound copy of the typescript of the interview with Karlene Stevens, the sister of Rodleigh Stevens, by Nouwen which occurred in November of 1991 in Kassel. This copy is the same draft as the draft in 14015, but it has different annotations.

Interview typescripts with Rodleigh Stevens

File consists of an unbound copy of the typescripts of the interview with Rodleigh Stevens by Nouwen, which occurred in November of 1991 in Kassel and which consists of two audio cassettes' worth of interview. File 14016-1 is the typescript of Tape 1 and file 14016-2 is the typescript of Tape 2. Throughout these typescripts Rodleigh Stevens' last name was incorrectly transcribed as Stephens.

Sound recordings of Nouwen's interviews with the Flying Rodleighs

File consists of twelve audio cassettes containing the audio recordings of the interviews with The Flying Rodleigh members and Nouwen from November 1991 and May 1992. SR176 v.1 and SR176 v.2 are of Nouwen recording his thoughts and impressions regarding the Flying Rodleighs and their trapeze act.

(full name unknown) (librarians/archivists at the Menninger Clinic), and Nouwen, regarding Nouwen’s interest in listening to audio tapes of Seward Hiltner housed in the archives. File also includes two copies of a bibliography of articles (one of which with the heading: "Articles to be Xeroxed on Inter-library loan for H.J.M. Nouwen Psych Dept."; a list of typed and handwritten notes of articles by Seward Hiltner, requested by Nouwen; an original typed letter to the National Council of Churches from Nouwen requesting pamphlets in which Nouwen writes "I am presently involved in research concerning Seward Hiltner, and am trying to collect as many of his writings as possible," and a letter of response; a copy of a typed letter from Hiltner to Mrs. Kay M. McKinney, Memorial Library, University of Notre Dame, granting permission to copy one of his articles for Nouwen; and interlibrary loan slips for material relating to Nouwen’s research on Seward Hiltner.

File consists of a letter from Gregory Tucker requesting to spend time at Daybreak. File also includes a handwritten note, not in Nouwen's hand, summarizing the letter and saying that Nouwen is OK with the stay, if Tucker agrees to work with the Daybreak residents. File also consists of a letter from Joe Egan, Kathy Bruner and Sue Mosteller to Nouwen asking him to look over a document to be presented to Council on accompaniment. Attached are Nouwen’s typed notes and thoughts on accompaniment.

Advent 1988 - making the circle full file

File consists of a copy of "Making the circle full" the 1988 Advent booklet for Daybreak, without pictures. File also contains original sketches to be inserted into the designated locations in the booklet.

Advent book 1994 file

File consists of a copy of the 1994 Advent book and copies of typed letters from Nouwen and The Pastoral Team.

Advent/Christmas at Daybreak 1987 file

File consists of materials pertaining to Advent activities at Daybreak in 1987, such as a copy of a typed letter from Nouwen to Joe Egan, Beth Porter, and Jim Foran in regards to Advent meditations for 1987 at Daybreak, two copies of Nouwen’s typed proposal for the Advent meditations, an original and copy of a series of sketches with a typed notes containing a passage for the Reconciliation Service on December 15, 1987 at Dayspring. The file also contains a prayer booklet created for December 1, 1987 Dayspring service.

American spirituality reading notes

File consists of eight pages of typed reading notes titled "Over Spiritualiteit in Amrika" [On Spirituality in America]. The notes place spirituality in political, social economic, and religious context in the United States. These notes were possibly taken from a Dutch book on American spirituality, and could have been used for a class or for research for an article.

Archives file

File consists of materials pertaining to L'Arche Daybreak, materials include a newspaper article, an article from Equinox, a off print of a dictionary entry for Arche written by Nouwen and a L'Arche Daybreak folder with Friends of L'Arche Board of Directors information for 1991-1992.

Assistants file

File consists of a letter from Martha Robbins pertaining to being a teaching fellow for Nouwen during the spring of 1983.

Baptist peacemaker file

File consists of two brochures, Baptist Peacemaker International Spirituality #1 and Baptist Peacemaker International Spirituality #2. Within Baptist Peacemaker International Spirituality #2 there are annotations in Nouwen's hand.

File also contained several pages of handwritten notes in Nouwen's hand on Central America.

File consists of a booklet Nouwen received at a retreat he participated in during July 1991, the booklet is called "Communion, community, ministry".

Covenant retreat notes, October 1991

File consists of Covenant Retreat Notes in French from October 1991 - in Nouwen's hand. Green dividing sheets [between lectures?]. Back of each last page in each section has "Covenant" with a sequential number. Also includes a second collection of notes with label: "Covenant Retreat Notes: 1. Arrupe, Fr. Pedro S.J. A Prayer to Jesus Christ Our Model (2). 2. Introductions to Pritch Books (unpublished). 3. French Texts. All of the material was written by Nouwen.

Daybreak constitution

File consists of Draft #2 of the Daybreak Constitution with a letter from the Constitution committee from May 15, 1995, asking for feedback on the draft before the next council meeting.
