The fonds consists of records kept by Stephen Reynolds during the course of his adult life. These include correspondence with family, friends, and colleagues that illuminate his personal life, his Christian faith, and his various pastoral and intellectual pursuits. Carbon copies of many outgoing letters were created and kept. Reynolds kept an intermittent diary through the time period represented here. These were sometimes typed, and often handwritten in small notebooks. He apparently removed pages from these notebooks and inserted them in files with correspondence and other material from the same time period.

Other records include academic papers, research material, sermons, prayers, drafts of manuscripts, course materials, and some official documents such as academic transcripts.

Fonds contains records created and accumulated by one of the founding members of the CCCDCC, John Foster, and predominantly consists of materials documenting the formative years of the cooperative, with particular focus on the events of 1970 and 1972. The records reflect the sometimes adversarial relationship with university administration and the province during those years and demonstrate ongoing negotiation with those two groups. Included are records documenting CCCDCC’s goals and philosophy and the challenges of combining political ideals with the day-to-day operation of a child care facility. Also included are materials that situate the CCCDCC as part of a larger movement towards co-operative organization, early childhood education in Canada and the U.S. and other movements of the period. There are also records related to other Toronto groups providing child care such as The St. Andrew’s University Day Nursery.

The records of Prof. Frederick Winter’s cover his publishing activity, research across Europe, particularly within Greece, teaching, and some aspects of his doctoral work.

Joan Winter’s records make up a larger portion of the fonds’ material with considerable documentation of her undergraduate education at the University of Alberta as well as her time at the University of Toronto. Records also include Joan Winter’s teaching material as well as the tutorials she led for some of Prof. Winter’s courses.

The Winters’ joint research is documented through travel diaries, articles, research, and presentation notes. Some of the presentations are accompanied by photographs and the fonds includes additional graphic material related to their research.

He was a contributing editor to foundational textbooks on adult education, including “Learning for Life,” and has held executive and board positions with the Canadian Association for Adult Education and the Canadian Commission for UNESCO. Dr. Thomas is perhaps best known for his role in developing Prior Learning Assessment Recognition (PLAR) in the community college system – whereby individuals can have life experience and non-institutional learning acknowledged and accredited within formal educational settings.

Records assembled by David Grenville relating to two projects on Omond McKillop Solandt: a proposed biography of him (never completed) and a symposium in his honour (1994) that was published as Perspectives in science and technology: the legacy of Omond Solandt. The files for the biography include original documents, research notes, correspondence, notes, manuscripts and addresses by Solandt (1957-1980) and 66 audio cassette tapes (with tape summaries by Jason Ridler) of interviews Grenville did with Solandt and his colleagues. The files on the symposium contain correspondence, minutes of meetings, notes, financial records, and partial drafts and copies of the book. There are also a number of accompanying photographs.

Collection contains personal and professional papers pertaining to Robertson Davies. This includes material relating to Davies’ early life, including writing and acting as a student at Upper Canada College (1929-1932), his studies at Baillol College at Oxford (1935-1938), and participation in theatrical performances in Kingston, Oxford, the Old Vic Theatre, Peterborough and the Stratford Festival (1934-1960). The papers contain a small amount of material related to Davies’ career as a journalist at Saturday Night magazine and the Peterborough Examiner. These papers contain extensive material on the novels, books and writing of Davies. This includes drafts, proofs, correspondence, reviews, clippings and any stage adaptations of his novels from The Salterton Trilogy (Tempest-Tost, Leaven of Malice and A Mixture of Frailties), The Deptford Trilogy (Fifth Business, The Manticore and World of Wonders), The Cornish Trilogy (The Rebel Angels, What’s Bred in the Bone and The Lyre of Orpheus) and the incomplete Toronto Trilogy (Murther and Walking Spirits and The Cunning Man). Also included are a complete set of original drafts and woodcuts for the Penguin edition covers of Davies’ novels, which were designed by the American printmaker Bascove. Limited material related to his essays, short stories and non-fiction publications, notably including Shakespeare’s Boy Actors, A Voice from the Attic, High Spirits and his books of fictional essays by Samuel Marchbanks are a part of the papers. Additionally, the collection includes considerable records relating to Davies’ contributions to anthologies as well as professional writing in academic journals, newspapers and magazines. These papers encompass Davies’ career as a playwright, including material related to twenty-two original works including drafts, scripts, photographs, posters, playbills and clippings, as well as the complete papers relating to the production of The Golden Ass which was staged after Davies’ death. The collection contains a large sampling of correspondence of both a professional and personal nature spanning from 1934 to his death in 1995. Also included in the collection is material related to the professional career of Davies’ as a well-known Canadian writer, this includes photographs and press clippings as well as speeches and commentaries made by Davies and his awards. Records also pertain to academic and trade writing on Davies and his work, most notably a complete set of interviews conducted with family, friends, colleagues and acquaintances by Val Ross during the course of her writing Robertson Davies: A Portrait in Mosaic (2009). Papers also relate to the eighteen years Davies spent as the Master of Massey College beginning in 1963. Including articles on the founding of Massey College, the death of Vincent Massey, newsletters, teaching material and invitations and programmes for the annual Christmas Gaudy, printed on the Massey College Press. Also included is a small amount of personal records including travel records, calendars, real estate and list of personal effects. Finally, the collection contains a series dedicated to the collecting practices of Dr. Rick Davis, who collected and assembled these papers. This includes Davis’ invoices and notes for his Davies material, as well as correspondence including exchanges with Robertson Davies, Moira Whalon, Brenda Davies and Jennifer Surridge.

B2009-0013: This accession consists of correspondence and subject files on individuals who were colleagues of Prof. Hayne during his 40 years in the Department of French at the University of Toronto. It complements other accessions within this fonds (see list below) since many of the letters relate to the discipline of French language and literature in particular and University College and the University of Toronto in general. Correspondents include, among others, F.A.C. Jeanneret, his former teacher as an undergraduate and other colleagues at University College in the Department of French such as, Paul Perron (Chair, Department of French), C.D. This fonds contains only a small amount of the body of work produced by Prof. Curry during his more than thirty years as an academic and scholar specializing in the theoretical studies in economic geography. The fonds is arranged in three series. Series 1 Correspondence includes correspondence in chronological from his period teaching at the University of Maryland through his career at the University of Toronto as well as subject files. Series 2 Manuscripts is the largest series by volume and contains 25 files relating to both published and unpublished papers, representing less than 50% of his body of work. There is only one file relating to geography courses taught during his time at the University of Toronto. There are no records documenting his studies in England, the United States or New Zealand.

The records document his academic achievements predominantly during his more than 30 years with the University of Toronto specializing in European economic history. It includes professional correspondence with colleagues and personal records relating to his employment arrangements with the University of Toronto, manuscripts of published and unpublished scholarly works in English, Hungarian and German, teaching and research materials mainly in the form of grant applications. There are also records relating to his undergraduate education at the University of Minnesota and graduate work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). This includes files relating to his PhD thesis (including a copy of the thesis) as well as class notes.
