Tape 6A

Item consists of 1 audio cassette from a Faith and Sharing Retreat held in August 1982 in Detroit, MI. Item features a talk by Jean Vanier.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I want to talk with you about community. I use the word community in a large sense. I would say in the sense of covenant relationships. Not necessarily living together, but when we are bound to others and feel responsible for one another.

Chris Sadler, Side A: "From Oppression to Wholeness" ; Side B: "Freedom in Poverty"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Scotland in 1986.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Side Two: My experience has been that the most generous people have been the poorest. I thought, at first, this was particular to India. In my village people often didn't have enough food, even in good times when there was work. Men had to wait to get their money and then wait again in long lines at the shop to buy food. Side One: I will look at oppression from three headings: 1) denial of nourishment; not just food, but all that nourishes us, above all love. 2) denial of space, the place to express our creativity and potential. 3) denial of personhood, the denial of recognition.

April 1, 1986. Conference #3. George Strohmeyer (in English)

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk by George Strohmeyer and Robert Larouche at a Zone Assistant Retreat from March 31 - April 5, 1986, in Orangeville, ON.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: It is a "folly" what we live at L'Arche and also what we live in silence this week so that we can become more present at home. This is not easy to do and we are doing ok here so far. If you are struggling with the silence don't worry about it. Don't judge ourselves or others but pray for each other.

April 1, 1986 - morning session. Conference #2. Robert Larouche (in English)

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk by George Strohmeyer and Robert Larouche at a Zone Assistant Retreat from March 31 - April 5, 1986, in Orangeville, ON.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: We will start today with a reading we like at L'Arche. Certain gospel texts reflect our reality and what L'Arche is about. The text is the two disciples going to Emmaus in Luke 24.

Assistants' Retreat Calgary 1983

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given by Jean Vanier at an Assistants' Retreat in Calgary, AL, in August 1983. Cassettes are labeled sequentially; titles of talks are not given.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Want to go on now into the place of pain. The great mystery for us is that the place of pain is also the place of healing. That part of our being which we are always running away from , which we really don't want to look at, which calls forth our anger, is in reality a sacrament and a place where we will meet Jesus.

Jean Vanier, Conference #2

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given by Jean Vanier at an Assistants' Retreat in Erie, PA, in August 1984.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Christianity is essentially a meeting of my heart with the heart of God. It's two people in love. Me in love with Jesus and Jesus in love with me. A love which is creative and sends me forth. That love is image of a greater love, that is the love between Jesus and His father.

Jean Vanier, "Our Journey to Wholeness"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Renewal Retreat in 1979. The title of the retreat was "Unless a Man Be Born Again."

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I am touched by these words of Jesus: "Do you want to be whole? Do you want to be healed?" And then he says "rise up" with all your weaknesses and fragility. I want to look at why do we reject some people. The "normal" and the "marginal" is in each of us. When Jesus asks "Do you want to be whole?" that is our rebirth, being brought back together again.

Jean Vanier, "Authority and Structures"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Renewal Retreat in 1979. The title of the retreat was "Unless a Man Be Born Again."

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: When we feel hopeless we often conceal it in different ways. We have to hide the fact that we are helpless. Also, when we receive aggression, that is a difficult thing. There again we often flee or get angry. Basically we can just hide in the office and become non available. Another reality is loneliness, which leads to the need to seek approval

Stephen Verney, Bishop of Repton, "St. John's Gospel, Chapters 2 and 3"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Renewal Retreat in 1979. The title of the retreat was "Unless a Man Be Born Again."

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I want to start with chapter 2 for two reasons: 1) Chapter 1 is really a prologue, often written at the end of a book, which St. John probably did; and 2) we will look at chapter 1 in ten weeks when you will be leaving renewal. May these 10 weeks on St. John be a source of water springing up into your own hearts.

Stephen Verney, "St. John's Gospel, Chapters 6-9"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Renewal Retreat in 1979. The title of the retreat was "Unless a Man Be Born Again."

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: The symbol today is a loaf of bread and some barley. Today we start by looking at chapter 6. St. John is already given us a context that the story is about transformation and renewal. As we have already seen with the water into wine and the need to be reborn from above, etc. This all happens through faith in Christ lifted up on the cross. Now we go to the Lake of Galilee with a large crowd that is hungry.

Stephen Verney, "St. John's Gospel, Chapter 10"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Renewal Retreat in 1979. The title of the retreat was "Unless a Man Be Born Again."

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: We are going to look at chapter 10 today. Our symbol is a candle as this part of the gospel is under the truth of "I am the light of the world" Today will be "I am the door" Jesus starts with a pastoral story about he who comes through the door is the shepherd of the sheep who calls them by name.

Stephen Verney, "St. John's Gospel, Chapter 17"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Renewal Retreat in 1979. The title of the retreat was "Unless a Man Be Born Again."

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Today in chapter 17 we come to the prayer of Jesus. It is very deep and we must take a lifetime to absorb its truth and what it means for us. But perhaps the fact of the prayer is more important than understanding it. Jesus is in prayer at this moment. The new consciousness, the Christ consciousness is prayer. A new mode of being; it is to be in prayer. To be reaching out to the Father in love and to be reaching out to each other in love.

Fr. Jean Ilbando, "The Mosse Culture" (part 1) - Monday, August 15, 1988, A.M. [French and translation]

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I would like to present the culture I am coming from in Africa. It's important to get out of one's culture and then come home in a different way. In the second part we can look at any questions you may have.

Side 1: Jo Lenon, “What does accompaniment require of me? (cont’d).” Side 2: Jo Lenon, “Trust and Choices.”

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at an Accompaniment Workshop for l'Arche assistants. The title of the conference was 'Accompaniment in l'Arche' and it was given in June 1990 in Calgary, AB.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Conf #3: is a continuation of #2. Conf #4: I am going to talk about trust and choices, but not together. Trust has been critical in my own journey. When I was 17 I had an experience with my mother where our relationship broke which had to do with trust. It impacted our relationship from then on. The residue left in me was "could I trust myself? and "could I trust God?" I had to work with this a lot with help. The experience has taught me a lot about acceptance and forgiveness. Trust is essential for our community living and our personal growth. Trust takes time and is built in relationships.

Conference 10, Friday afternoon, Kevin Cullen, S.J., "The role of l'Arche in the church"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a retreat for assistants at Morrow Park in Toronto, ON, from March 1-7, 1987.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Conf #10: How can we take what we have been given this week and before and bring that into our world? Who in our community can help us to continue on the path we have discovered this week? I also want to offer another perspective, one from outside of L'Arche as a minister. The text is the prologue from St. John's gospel. The light which shines in the darkness allows us to see. Who are we as L'Arche as part of a larger reality which is the church?

Conference 11, Friday morning - Closing conference. March 18, 1988. George Strohmeyer (in English) and Regine [last name unknown] (in French)

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a retreat for Assistants from March 13-18, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: This is a beautiful story at the of John's gospel of Jesus appearing to the disciples. But it is Peter that Jesus changes and transforms after the meal. It's a mystery of three times "Do you love me?" Jesus raises Peter to a new level and is calling him to a new way, "follow me and feed my sheep."

April 2, 1986. Conference #5. George Strohmeyer (in English)

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk by George Strohmeyer and Robert Larouche at a Zone Assistant Retreat from March 31 - April 5, 1986, in Orangeville, ON.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: This retreat is God's work, not ours. I am grateful to be part of it, even with my limitations. Our "monitoring" self is always there on our shoulder watching us and asking "what's in this for me?" So don't be surprised if your ego tries to hook you and bring you back to sanity. Our call is to go deeper into the silence.

April 3, 1986, afternoon. George Strohmeyer (in English)

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk by George Strohmeyer and Robert Larouche at a Zone Assistant Retreat from March 31 - April 5, 1986, in Orangeville, ON.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: We continue today to discover more about covenant, I encourage you to be faithful to your own readiness for your call and covenant. The cry of every human heart is what is there for me. We have so many questions. The answer is in Rev. 21 and its powerful images, e.g. "I saw a new heaven and a new earth."

Conference 3, Monday afternoon. March 14, 1988. George Strohmeyer

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a retreat for Assistants from March 13-18, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: To rest on a retreat means to be disciplined. To be silent, eat slowly, to walk, to pray--that's what it means to rest. When Jesus says rest, He is inviting us to rest here, Something happens to us when we are in love. We become peaceful. Who can understand love? True for our relationship with Jesus, but can't force it. It's to receive. Let Jesus reveal to us what love means.

Stephen Verney, Gospel Meditation: "John 15: 1-18, I am the True Vine" - August 12, 1992 ; "John 20: 19-23, I am the Resurrection" - August 13, 1992

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 25 - August 20, 1992, in England.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: We always have to let go of many things, in fact, everything eventually to free, including letting go of God and just trusting God. Thus he says to us "I am the resurrection."

Fr. Jean Ilbando, "L'Arche, a Way of Inculturation" - Tuesday, August 16, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Today I would like to share more on my experience within L'Arche. I want to start with a myth about God's presence in my culture which will help your understanding,
