The Massey Family records consist primarily of official and personal documents created by Vincent Massey. They reflect his distinguished diplomatic career, including his terms as Canadian ambassador to the United States during the 1920s and as High Commissioner to London during the 1930s and 1940s, along with his lengthy affiliation with the Liberal Party of Canada. Also represented are his years as Governor-General of Canada and as the leader of the Royal Commission on National Development in the Arts, Sciences and Letters. The moral and financial support given by Vincent and Alice Massey to cultural development in Canada, both individually and through the Massey Foundation, is evident in a wealth of documents relating to the fields of education, music, drama and fine arts (including such institutions and organizations as the National Council of Education, Hart House Quartet, Hart House Theatre, the Dominion Drama Festival, and the National Art Gallery). Their support of the University of Toronto is also well documented. In addition to the records of Vincent Massey, some papers of Alice Massey and correspondence of many members of the Grant, Massey and Parkin families are present.

The bulk of the records are found in B1987-0082. There are two other related accessions:

• B1998-0008: Correspondence between Vincent Massey and Sir Henry Newbolt, including a copy of memo on the Constitutional Crisis in 1926.
• B1998-0032: Files of the Board of Syndics (G.F. McFarland, Honorary Treasurer) relating to Hart House Theatre (1929-1945), and Hart House String Quartet (1931-1942); one file on Hart House 50th anniversary (1968-1969).

Personal records of Antonio Franceschetti, Professor Emeritus of Italian Studies at the University of Toronto, consisting of correspondence, certificates, administrative and teaching files, including files on graduate students, documentation of his work with organizations including the Associazione Internazionale per gli Studi di Lingua e Letteratura Italiana (AISLLI), the Canadian Federation of the Humanities, the Canadian Society for Italian Studies (CSIS), and the Dante Society of Toronto, grant applications, manuscripts of articles, books (including a volume on Petrarch that was never published), research notes, addresses, and posters.

Fonds consists of records documenting the professional and personal life of Prof. Hassanpour, Kurdish-Iranian Marxist scholar and Professor at UofT’s Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations. Material reflects key areas of Prof. Hassanpour’s research, most significantly Kurdish history and culture; the history of political movements, grassroots organization, and class struggle in Iran, Iraq and Turkey; and communication theory and sociolinguistics. Material includes correspondence with colleagues and scholars internationally, documentation of research with particular focus on Prof. Hassanpour’s dissertation and his Peasant Movement Project, records relating to conference presentations, interviews, and teaching, as well as his publishing activity.

Prof. Hassanpour was deeply invested in the preservation of Kurdish oral, visual, and textual documentary heritage as a response to the historical state suppression of cultural-political struggle of Kurdish people. Reflected in records throughout the fonds is Prof. Hassanpour’s work in pursuing the establishment of Kurdish Studies as a discipline, his work editing journals related to Kurdistan, and his effort in exposing and circulating books on Kurdish Studies to libraries and research institutions internationally. Prof. Hassanpour also actively collected and preserved Kurdish texts, dailies, and visual materials. This material is included in Series 9 (Reference material) and through bibliographic and audio material held in other repositories at the University of Toronto Libraries (please see the related material note below).

Accession B1991-0020 contains correspondence, articles, minutes and addresses documenting the activities of the Ectology Committee of the Department of Zoology and the Passamaquoddy Salmon Associates. Correspondence is among Scott, A.G. Huntsman and Harold H. Harvey.

Accession B2016-0001 contains the personal records of W. Beverley Scott, Professor Emeritus of Zoology at the University of Toronto, former Curator of Fishes at the Royal Ontario Museum, and former Director of the Huntsman Marine Science Centre in St. Andrews, New Brunswick. The records include correspondence, certificates, diaries, travel files, journals and field notes, research files, manuscripts and publications, and drafts of addresses, with associated photographs, slides, x-rays, notes, other related material, and a number of packets of fish scales.

This accession contains approximately 400 photoprints and 200 negatives and strip negatives, along with 41 slides, 48 x-rays, a few postcards, and a number of drawings.

These accessions of personal records provide a fairly complete representation of Samuel Hollander’s professional life as an academic. The accessions cover his entire career from his student days at the London School of Economics to his retirement from the University of Toronto in 1998 and his appointment at Ben-Gurion University in Beer-Sheva, Israel in 2000. Correspondence, found in the various series gives a rich commentary on his professional endeavours and gives a good overview of the debates surrounding Hollander’s work. Lecture notes and taped lectures document how his ideas were taught in the classroom and his Ph.D. files found in Series 5 show his dedication to the teaching and mentor roles for which he is so highly regarded.

Records of Joan Winearls, map librarian at the University of Toronto, consisting of correspondence, course and lecture notes, addresses, diaries, articles, research files for and drafts of the manuscript of "Mapping Upper Canada, 1780-1867", articles on Allan Brooks, and her Catalogue of Allan Brooks artwork. There are also conference files, relating in particular to the Canadian Cartographic Association, the International Cartographic Association, and the Conference on Editorial Problems 1993 conference in Toronto, ‘Editing Early and Historical Atlases’. There are also exhibition files associated with this conference and with ‘Mapping Toronto’s first century’, a 1984 exhibition mounted as part of the 200th anniversary celebrations of the City of Toronto.

Personal records of Dr. Daniel W. Lang, professor, Department of Theory and Policy Studies, OISE/UT, and senior policy advisor to the president of the University of Toronto. Records include files relating to his activities as a senior administrator and policy advisor to University presidents James Ham, David Strangway, George Connell, Robert Prichard, and David Naylor. Files document projects, plans, financing, campus development, technology development, etc. Also includes records documenting his academic responsibilities relating to teaching, research and publication, as well as external consulting activities to various academic institutions and government bodies in Ontario and across Canada, particularly the Council of Ontario Universities and the Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities.

Personal records of Murray Alexander Wilton document his student years at University of Toronto and his subsequent involvement in the University of Toronto Athletic Association (UTAA). Student papers include: course lecture notes, essays and exams for courses mainly in economics, accounting, finance as well as some general Arts courses such as English, History and Psychology. Professors whose courses are documented included A.F.W. Plumptre (Political Economy), Vincent Bladen (Political Economy), Gilbert Jackson (Commerce and Finance), W.S. Ferguson (Accounting) and S.S. Cassidy (Social Science). There is also one photograph 1931-32, House Committee of Hart House. These student records date from 1929 to 1932.

From the mid 1960s to the early 1990s, Wilton was very active on both the UTAA Advisory Board and T-Holder's Association. Correspondence, reports, minutes of meetings, agenda and notes document his activities on these two bodies. Of particular note is a 1968 report Wilton wrote for the Advisory Board regarding the role and influence of the UTAA Advisory Board. There is also one photograph of one of the UTAA committees circa 1965. These records date from 1961-1993 with the bulk of them dated from 1967-1973.

This fonds consists of materials from 15 different family members and is arranged in series based on the size of the materials from each member (with six family members contributing to most of this fonds). There are 8 series overall (with series 7 consisting of additional family members and series 8 as the photography series). Each series within
this fonds predominantly consists of correspondence between family members, legal documents, financial records, articles, diaries, genealogical research, and analog photographs, and a video. This fonds also consists of objects such as medals, ribbons,

This fonds documents the administrative and teaching duties of Robert Spencer, as a Professor Emeritus of History and a specialist in European history, especially German history in the 19th and 20th centuries. They also document his education and his participation in World War II; his extensive international research, publications and speaking engagements; as well as his involvement with professional associations and organizations such as the University of Toronto Contingent, Canadian Officers Training Corps (COTC), the International Studies Programme and the Graduate Centre for International Studies, Altantik-Brücke, and the Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe (CSCE). Included is personal correspondence, correspondence with international organizations, government departments, embassies and consulates; lecture notes; manuscripts and addresses.

Also present are two sous-fonds. The first is the personal papers of his wife, Ruth Margaret Church Spencer, who served with the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service (WRENS) during World War II as a base librarian and afterwards as the first professional librarian at Canada House in London. The second consists of files compiled by Ralph Flenley, a specialist in German history and sometime chair of the Department of History: examination questions, student mark books, and drafts of an unpublished manuscript on Anglo-German relations.

Correspondence, minutes, memoranda, notes, reports, and press clippings documenting the activities of the Faculty of Arts and Science Constituency of the President's Council of the University of Toronto, as assembled by Professor Robert Spencer while a member of the Council. In addition to Council minutes and related material, there are files on several presidential advisory committees, the Advisory Planning Committee of the Board of Govemors, the University's Master Plan, the School of Hygiene, tenure (Haist Committee), and the Council's Sub-committee on Resource Planning. Included is material documenting the participation of professors C. B. Macpherson and J. B. Conacher.

This accession includes a Challenge Coin created for Robert Spencer’s 100th birthday and a note that describes its iconography.

Records of two generations of the Hastings family, relating primarily to Elgin Rowland and Mary Ferguson Hastings and their son, John Elgin Ferguson Hastings. Included are course notes and laboratory notes, certificates and photographs documenting Elgin Hastings’ years (1908 – 1913) as a medical student at the University of Toronto, and correspondence, certificates and photographs relating to his wife’s life and activities. Most of the records document the activities of John Hastings as a student, especially the University of Toronto Schools and medicine (1945 – 1954) at the University of Toronto; his career as a professor of and administrator in public health administration at the University of Toronto (1956 – 1993), and as an advisor and consultant on community and public health issues from the local to international levels. The correspondence includes many letters from contacts in India, Japan, and elsewhere internationally; there are also research materials, manuscripts of articles, books and addresses, conference files; studies, including the Royal Commission on Health Services, the Community Health Centre project, the Sault Ste. Marie study and the Canadian Caribbean Health Initiative; and files on his involvement with Canadian Council of Churches projects and with the United Church of Canada. Included are photographs, an audiotape, two videos, and a number of artifacts.

B1975-0031: Handwritten notebooks of students and Dr. Franks used for recording experiments including index, summary notes and numbered laboratory slides. One oversize folder containing plan of Banting Institute dated 1933 and plans of apparatus and tanks. (111 Boxes plus 1 oversize folder., 1935-1956)

B1995-0042: Two colour photographs of the Franks Flying Suit on display at Camp Borden, Ontario (1995). Once copy print of Franks in his WWII uniform. Also includes 1 file with photographs that documents his brother Hugh Franks appointment to the Board of the Royal Ontario Museum in 1981

Records in this fonds mainly document Nancy Howell’s research on the !Kung San of Botswana. Her nearly three years researching in the field with her anthropologist husband Richard Lee were formative to a lifetime of research on the !Kung San hunter gatherers. Included is much of her original data that has formed the basis of her research in this area as well as the basis of research collaboration with others. More than half of this fonds is her original data on the !Kung San from that 1960s field trip.
Her two main works that are well documented in this accession are Surviving Fieldwork: Health and Safety in Anthropological Fieldwork (1990) and Life Histories of the Dobe !Kung (2010). Her teaching and administrative roles at the University of Toronto are not documented in this accession.

Fonds consists of records documenting the professional, personal and creative life of Dr. Vivian Rakoff, psychiatrist, administrator and professor. Records include correspondence, certificates, articles, research and background material, creative writing, sketches, and records relating to Dr. Rakoff’s many appearances on CBC programs, including tapes of the shows.

The T.F. McIlwraith fonds consists of records documenting McIlwraith’s training and career as an anthropologist as well as his roles as an administrator and professor at the University of Toronto. Covering three separate accessions, material primarily includes professional records related to his research, teaching, and publishing activity. Fonds includes significant coverage is of McIlwraith’s writing, both published and unpublished. Series 17 (The Bella Coola Indians) focuses on his research with the Nuxalk Nation for the book The Bella Coola Indians. Extensive correspondence, subject files, maps and photographs are included within the fonds and partially consist of material collected and/ or sent to McIlwraith in connection with his research.

Also includes a typescript of Prof. McIlwraith's book "The Bella Coola Indians" (Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1948) including field notes, vocabulary card, photographs and copper plates of illustrations related to his research about the Nuxalk Peoples of Bella Coola, British Columbia.

Fonds consists of six accessions of records documenting the life of Martin L. Friedland, as a student, professor of law and administrator at the University of Toronto; as an expert on legal matters and a contributor to the formation of public policy at the provincial and federal levels; and as an author of several books and numerous articles, in particular the researching and writing of his book University of Toronto: A History (University of Toronto Press, 2002 & 2013).

This fonds contains comprehensive documentation on all aspects of Richard Lee’s work as a well-known anthropologist. Correspondence, found within Series 1 but also throughout the fonds, is multifaceted and includes both incoming and outgoing letters with colleagues, students, university administrators and publishers. His teaching lectures and numerous papers, talks and drafts of publications represent a full body of work that synthesis his research from his early work with the the Ju/'hoansi-!Kung San of Botswana and Namibia to his evolving interest in indigenous human rights and the impact of Aids/HIV in southern Africa. This fonds is rich in original research including original collated data, field notebooks, grants requests and general notes. Much of this is supplemented with photographs and sound recordings related to his research and publications. Finally, files relating to professional meetings and groups document the overall field of anthropology, Lee’s role within it and the changing nature of the discipline and the role of anthropologists in society.

Personal records of Professor Stephen Clarkson, documenting his career as a political scientist, writer, teacher, and his early political career in municipal politics and with the Liberal Party of Canada and Ontario. Records in this fonds document the entirety of Clarkson's life and career. Records include biographical information (CV's, activity reports, honours), personal and professional correspondence, and files related to his early education and the writing of his Ph.D. thesis.

Series 3 to 13 consist of records documenting Clarkson's several books and his extensive research and writings over the course of his career. Joint projects and research with Christina McCall including original records by her can be found in some these series as well, specifically the research and writing of Trudeau and Our Times (Series 2) and research on Canadian Federal politics (Series 13).

Series 14 to 18, document Clarkson's teaching activities and his career within the University of Toronto's Department of Political Science.

Series 19 to 22 document his political roles within the Liberal party, his run for Toronto Mayor in 1969 and as well as his social activism.

This fonds also includes Liberal Party of Canada policy documents (1966-1976) belonging to Allen Linden that were given to Clarkson either because he took over as chair of the policy committee or collected as a primary resource for his research on the Liberal Party.

Accession B2019-0003 was an accrual acquired from his spouse Nora Clarkson following his death, and consists of files from his home office and laptop computer.

Accession B2023-0008 (1 box, 1975-2000) is an accrual of further personal records consisting of his journal and notes about his marriage to Christina McCall.

Travel album and scrapbook, created by Kathleen Gray (U.C. 1921) documenting the 1925 Undergraduate Tour of Great Britain and France with the Overseas Education League. The album contains photographs, postcards, ephemera and memorabilia. It is also annotated with diary type entries which are interspersed throughout with drawings by Kathleen Gray illustrating the adventures of her and her cohort of friends who took the trip together.

Consists of correspondence, diary, personal files, administrative records; personal and administrative papers, manuscripts, scrapbooks, and panoramic photographs of North House, Burwash Hall, Victoria College (1932-1933); Varsity staff, 1927; photographs of Greece; C.O.T.C.; wedding portraits and other unidentified photos.

Personal records of Edna W. Park, graduate and Professor in the Faculty of Household Science. Includes personal correspondence, diplomas, certificates and photoprints relating to early education and family; lecture notes and teaching materials relating to Household science at the University of Toronto, copies of papers by other authors from conferences attended; reports and other materials relating to the U. of T. review of the Faculty of Food Sciences (1971-1973). Also includes records on the Household Science Alumnae Association and other materials such as scrapbook documenting the history of household science studies in general and at the University of Toronto. B1981-0010: Articles by, tributes about, and obituaries of Erich Baer; also doctoral thesis, certificates, medals, plaques, and photoprints documenting his career. Also includes correspondence and other papers relating to Hart House memorial on his death and matters relating to his estate. 1913-1983.

Fonds consists of letters (1929-1962) that Gertrude Knighton's mother, Elizabeth (Lili) Louisa Boeschenstein, wrote to her mother, Emma Schoch-Walter, and her older sister, Emmeli Schoch; Lili Schoch's exercise books that she compiled to teach children [191-]; letters to her and Hermann Boeschenstein from their families in Switzerland, 1928- ca. 1947; correspondende between Hermann and Lili (1930-1955) and with their children, principally Frank and Gertrude (1944-1963). Includes a number of postcards and a few photographs. Many of the letters are written in German, and some in Old German.

B2014-0008: Contains correspondence and several drafts of Robert H. Blackburn's memoir "From Barley Field to Academe". Much of the correspondence is between Karen Turko, the Director, Donor Relations and Development of the U of T Libraries, Chief Librarian's Office, and numerous proof readers and several publishing companies including the U of T Press. Consists of records collected by Gray while working on a history of Hart House Theatre and Robert Gill. Included are Hart House Theatre scrapbooks compiled by Gill containing programs, clippings and photographs; financial records of Hart House Theatre as well as some original correspondence; numerous photographs of Hart House Threatre, Hart House and its staff; scrapbook and minutes book of the Players Club. Included as well, is a manuscript on the history of Hart House Theatre (draft) written by Jack Gray as well as taped interviews conducted by Gray with Hart House Theatre staff including Robert Gill.

Three photographs documenting Wilbert P. Brian experiences as a member of Devonshire Residence East House. Included is a view of the 1934 freshmen bed race in which Brian took part. Accompanying these photographs are two pages from a scrapbook with clippings about the freshmen bed races and other related events.

Snapshots depicting student life on campus during Brooks' time in the Faculty of Medicine. Includes images of the centenary parade in 1927, activities at Hart House, Devonshire House, Varsity Arena, and the Medical Building. Four duplicate negatives can be found in box 002P.

Records documenting the activites of Milton Brown as professor in the Department of Hygiene and Preventive Medicine and head (1956-1967) of the Department of Public Health. There are extensive files on administrative matters and courses; on courses given at the Canadian Civil Defence College; on research relating to tuberculosis, other communicable diseases, and the development of vaccines; and on committees, especially those that Brown chaired, such as the Panel on Infection and Immunity of the Defence Research Board and the Committee on Accident Prevention of the Canadian Public Health Association. Some of Dr. Brown's files incorporate material produced by Donald Fraser, and there are also some of the latter's files.

Included is correspondence, memoranda and notes, financial records, grant applications, lecture notes, minutes, reports, addresses, manuscripts, publications and photoprints.
