Menus types included placemat menus, single sheet menus, trifold and four fold menus, five fold, seven fold and menus in booklet style. Some menus are laminated while others are in vinyl enclosures. Menus range from take away and delivery, to eat in and include wine lists, menus for cafes, breakfast menus and menus for cafeteria lunches.

The material is divided into Series 1 Menus. The series is divided into 6 subseries: Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, Oceania and South America.

Kurumbasiddy Era Kanagaratnam collection

The Kurumbasiddy Era Kanagaratnam collection consists of the lifework of Mr. R. Kanagaratnam who collected Tamil and English newspaper clippings and manuscripts related to political and cultural affairs of Eelam Tamils for almost six decades under the institutional name of the International Tamil Archives.

Kanagratnam’s collections document more than a hundred years of Tamil polity, starting from 1889 to December 2013. Although the main part of his collections is newspaper clippings, there are also published and unpublished articles related to social and cultural heritage of the nation of Eelam Tamils. 

Newspaper clippings from Morning Star, The Hindu Organ, Eezhakeasari (1930 to 1957), Veerakeasari, Chuthanthiran (since 1952), The Daily News, Sun, Saturday Review (full volume), Eezha-Naadu, Chari-nikar (full volume), Tribune (full volume), Thisai (full volume), Thina-murasu (from 1st issue to 2002), Dhiniapathi, Sunday Times, Sunday Observer, Thinakkural, Chinthaa-ma’ni, Island, Chudar-o’li and Hotspring are some of the collections in the International Tamil Archives. His collections also include 10,000 published and unpublished articles, manuscripts, and around 10,000 cartoons.

Series contains newspapers and textual records such as Ceylon Patriot, Hindu Organ, Sansoni Commission Evidence, Sutantiran, Thainadu, Congress, Eelakesari, Kesari, The Independent, Thina Murasu, Sari Negar, Viduthalai, Tribune, Elath Thamilar Varalalu (or Waralaru), and Tamil Culture. Some reels contain miscellaneous articles or articles that have been organized by theme.

North America

The subseries includes menus from countries part of the North American continent including Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Canada, (from the provinces of British Columbia, Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador, Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan and the Yukon), Costa Rica, Cuba, Curaçao (part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands), El Salvador, Greenland (part of Denmark), Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, and the United States of America, (from the states of Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming).

Subseries contains postcard souvenirs from restaurants and other paper souvenirs, including photographs and cards.

Asia

The subseries includes menus from China, (Beijing, Hangzhou, and Shanghai), Hong Kong (Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China), Egypt, Guam (United States), India, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan (Republic of China), Tibet (Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China), Thailand, Turkey and Vietnam. Menus feature Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Indonesia, Italian, European, Russian, American, vegetarian and seafood cuisine.

The subseries comprises countries from the following areas: Eastern Asia, South-East Asia and Western Asia and Middle East.

Hong Kong and Tibet have been treated as separate geographical areas for retrieval purposes.

Although part of Russia is found on the Asian continent, all menus from Russia are found in the Europe subseries.

File contains trifold, single sheet and booklet style menus. Menus feature Chinese, Italian, American, Japanese, Russian and seafood cuisine. File also contains a banquet menus for Mr. L. Everett and Captain A Seeder and officers of the S.S. Siberia.

Samuel James Velupillai (S. J. V.) Chelvanayakam fonds

The fonds reflects Chelvanayakam’s career as a political leader of the Sri Lankan Tamil community, as well as documenting the daily operations of the Federal Party.

The fonds documents important political events in Sri Lanka from the 1950s to the 1970s and provides witness to the struggles faced by Sri Lankan Tamils.

The fonds also contains records relating to his family, background, and memorial material collected after his death by his wife, Emily Grace Chelvanayakam. The fonds is organized into three series and covers the periods of 1933-1937, 1939-1940, 1944-1988, with the bulk of the material being from the 1960s and 1970s.

Personal records include correspondence, personal items, financial and estate documentation, and other material. Professional records include office files, party records, correspondence, and documentation. Memorial material includes posters, newspaper clippings, and a book of condolences. Menus from the United States - California (M-S) (1926-1960s)

File contains booklet and trifold style menus. Menus are from Los Angeles, Hollywood, San Pedro, San Francisco, Oakland and San Bernardino. American and Chinese cuisine are featured. Several of the menus are stained or are experiencing signs of foxing. The menu from New Dragon Cafe has a hand written inscription on the cover.

Menus from the United States - California (D-G) (1927-1960s)

File contains booklet style menus. Menus feature Chinese cuisine including Chop Suey and Chow Mein. Menu from the Dinuba Café has the date Oct. 21, 1927 written at the top in blue ink. The menu is also stained. Evelyn’s Chow Mein Cafe is also stained and features prices written in hand in blue ink. Other menus in this file feature significant grease and food stains.

Miscellaneous correspondence

Subseries contains correspondence belonging to other members of the family whose correspondence was also found at 16 Alfred House Gardens. Also contains some personal material of individuals who worked for ITAK at a time when the office may have been located at the house as well.
