Otto Schneid Papers

The collection consists of research materials for Schneid's unpublished book on 20th century Jewish artists in Europe, manuscripts for his published and unpublished works, and galleys for his published writings. The research materials include correspondence with more than 120 Jewish artists, copies of their exhibition catalogues, and other published works, and photographs of their art. Most of these artists perished during the Second World War.

The fonds reflects Chelvanayakam’s career as a political leader of the Sri Lankan Tamil community, as well as documenting the daily operations of the Federal Party.

The fonds documents important political events in Sri Lanka from the 1950s to the 1970s and provides witness to the struggles faced by Sri Lankan Tamils.

The fonds also contains records relating to his family, background, and memorial material collected after his death by his wife, Emily Grace Chelvanayakam. The fonds is organized into three series and covers the periods of 1933-1937, 1939-1940, 1944-1988, with the bulk of the material being from the 1960s and 1970s.

Personal records include correspondence, personal items, financial and estate documentation, and other material. University of Toronto Electronic Music Studio tape collection

Collection consists of electronic music compositions created at the University of Toronto Electronic Music Studio (UTEMS) and copies of tapes made at other electronic music studios around the world. The collection includes the two original card-catalogue indices for the tape collection, organized by tape number and by composer.

Among the tapes that originated at UTEMS are compositions by faculty and students from the Faculty of Music, independent composers who were granted access to the studio, and compositions created by visiting artists, scholars, and composers. Composers at UTEMS included Robert Aitken, John Beckwith, Brian Cherney, Gustav Ciamaga, Richard Henninger, David Jaeger, Larry Lake, John Mills-Cockell, James Montgomery, Harvey Olnick, Dennis Patrick, Myron Schaeffer, David Williams, and many others. Composers from other studios include Milton Babbitt, Henk Badings, Luciano Berio, Hugh Le Caine, Douglas Lilburn, Pierre Schaeffer, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Vladimir Ussachevsky.

Collection includes correspondence, notes, typescripts, translations, photocopies of journal articles, and other working papers about Eduard Hanslick. Hanslick was the focus of Payzant's later research, which resulted in two books (published 1986 and 1991), several articles, and various lectures. The fonds consists of the research used in these writings, as well as a typescript manuscript of Payzant's translation of On the musically beautiful: a contribution towards the revision of the aesthetics of music (1986), and copies of his lectures, also titled "On the musically beautiful." The correspondence includes copies of letters between Hanslick and Robert Zimmermann (1824-1898), as well as correspondence between Payzant and other scholars about Hanslick, and correspondence between Payzant and Dietmar Strauß.

The collection covers Sutton Straus’ career as a journalist with the Toronto Telegram (1971), The Toronto Star (1972-1979, 1981-1992) and The Toronto Star (1979-1981, 1992). This includes correspondence from readers, co-workers and well-known politicians, entertainers and dignitaries, as well as photographs of Sutton Straus during the course of her work. The material also includes clippings of her columns, interviews and articles preserved by Sutton Straus, as well as three oversized scrapbooks containing clippings from her time at the Toronto Telegram and The Toronto Sun. The collection also comprises material related to Sutton Straus’ career as an author of six books, and her long-term volunteer work with non-profit and philanthropic organizations in both Canada and the United States.
