Correspondence, addresses, lectures, memorabilia and photoprints documenting the career of Winifred Barnstead as founder and first director of the Library School, University of Toronto.

Correspondence, manuscripts, lecture notes, notes, minutes, addresses, diaries, certificates, scrapbooks, photographs and maps documenting the career of Professor J. Tuzo Wilson as geophysicist and administrator. Included are files that belonged to his parents, Henrietta Loetitia Tuzo Wilson and John Armistead Wilson.

This fonds consists of a mix of documents and records pertaining to Easterbrook’s various professional roles, including those of teacher, researcher, and administrator. Of the three accessions that make up the fonds, B1975-0030 consists of correspondence with Harold Innis as well as assorted notes, including those taken from discussions with Innis during his final months; B1979-0039 consists of correspondence, memoranda, reports, notes, and manuscripts documenting Easterbrook’s roles as professor and head of the Department of Political Economy; while B1985-0011 consists of textual and graphic records documenting Easterbrook’s teaching activities and term as Chairman of the Department of Political Economy. There is thus considerable overlap between the aforementioned accessions. The organization of the fonds into series consequently reflects this overlap such that several accessions often appear in a single series.

B2008-0018: Two photographs documenting William J. Houston, student in the Faculty of Education in 1913 and later a graduate of Arts (B.A. 1924). The two group portraits include the Faculty of Education Literary Executive , Fall term 1913 and an unidentified Faculty of Education sports team (possibly soccer).

B2013-0028: Portraits of William J. Houston, student in the Faculty of Education in 1913 and later a graduate of Arts (B.A. 1924) in World War I uniform. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the 170th Canadian Infantry Battalion and subsequently in active service in France in 1918.

This fonds consists of one accession of personal records of Dr. William J. Fowler, former professor of applied psychology at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto, and various US institutions such as University of Chicago, Harvard and Tufts University. The records are an important resource for students of the history of development of child studies in North America. Dr. Fowler, in addition to developing his own theories on early childhood development, was a colleague of several American pioneers in this area, such as Dr. Helen Koch, Dr. Robert Hess, Dr. Alice Honig and Prof. J. McVicker Hunt.

The records are organized into 10 series reflecting a career that spanned more than 40 years, from his days as a graduate student at Harvard and the University of Chicago to his years as a private consultant in his company, Center for Early Learning and Child Care, Inc. Included in this accession is correspondence, manuscripts of both published and unpublished works, teaching materials, research materials, grant proposals and reviews, special project files relating to the joint OISE- Canadian Mothercraft Society of the early 1970’s, and records of the Center for Early Learning and Child Care,Inc.

Original research data with personal identifiers for children as subjects of research were not retained.

Included in this accession are the personal bound letter books belonging to educator, journalist and graduate of the University of Toronto William Houston. The two bound volumes date from Dec. 31 1883 to June 13 1891 and from July 6 1891 to Nov. 8 1895. The correspondence covers the period that Houston was a member of the University of Toronto Senate and Legislative Librarian. Also included are notes on Houston family history compiled by Mrs. Eila Hopper-Ross, grand niece of William Houston (ca. 1980s - 2000).

Fonds also includes 2 photographs: a portrait of William Houston ca. 1923 and a photograph of John Houston standing in front of the family home in Waterdorwn, 1937.

Also includes one piece of correspondence from John Houston to "cousin" Theresa McAfee (1935).

Personal records of W. Harding le Riche, documenting his personal life in South Africa and Canada and his career as an epidemiologist, especially at the School of Hygiene and in the Department of Preventative Medicine at the University of Toronto.

The records include correspondence, diaries, scrapbooks, memorabilia, and photographs; drafts of articles, chapters of books and whole books, including le Riche’s Memoirs; addresses; course outlines, lecture notes and other teaching files; conference files; and reports derived from academic research and consulting work. There is also a set of LPs consisting of a recording by the South African Broadcasting Corporation of a 1966 lecture series by Raymond Dart, an eminent anthropologist who first described Australopithecus africannus.

Correspondence, notes, memoranda, reports, manuscripts, articles, brochures, reviews, photoprints and maps documenting the production of the Economic Atlas of Ontario which appeared in 1969. The project was directed by Professor William Dean of the Department of Geography.

The production of the Economic Atlas of Ontario was undertaken by the Department of Geography at the University of Toronto by a group of staff and graduate students headed by Professor William Dean. The principal financial sponsors were the Ontario Department of Economics and Development and the University of Toronto through the "Varsity Fund".

Its purpose was to provide new insights into the complexity of economic activities in Ontario and their relationship to the physical and behavioural environments. When the Atlas appeared in 1969, it was immediately recognized as a superlative example of its genre, both for the information it provided and for its design. In 1970 it won the world's highest international design award, the gold medal at the International Book Fair in Leipzig. In 1973 it received the Wallace W. Atwood Prize for "the work which is of greatest significance and which has made the greatest contribution to the field of geography in the continent".

The William Edward Gallie fonds consists of 6 series based largely on his work as a surgeon at the Hospital for Sick Children and the Toronto General Hospital, as well as his role at the University of Toronto as Dean and Professor at the Faculty of Medicine. The majority of the records relate to Gallie’s publications, lectures, public addresses, and research. The fonds also includes a small amount of personal ephemera such as event invitations and newspaper clippings. The W. E. Accession B2016-0001 contains the personal records of W. Beverley Scott, Professor Emeritus of Zoology at the University of Toronto, former Curator of Fishes at the Royal Ontario Museum, and former Director of the Huntsman Marine Science Centre in St. Andrews, New Brunswick. The records include correspondence, certificates, diaries, travel files, journals and field notes, research files, manuscripts and publications, and drafts of addresses, with associated photographs, slides, x-rays, notes, other related material, and a number of packets of fish scales.

This accession contains approximately 400 photoprints and 200 negatives and strip negatives, along with 41 slides, 48 x-rays, a few postcards, and a number of drawings.

B1995-0042: Two colour photographs of the Franks Flying Suit on display at Camp Borden, Ontario (1995). Once copy print of Franks in his WWII uniform. Also includes 1 file with photographs that documents his brother Hugh Franks appointment to the Board of the Royal Ontario Museum in 1981

Three photographs documenting Wilbert P. Brian experiences as a member of Devonshire Residence East House. Included is a view of the 1934 freshmen bed race in which Brian took part. Accompanying these photographs are two pages from a scrapbook with clippings about the freshmen bed races and other related events.

Nine-two coloured slides document the grounds and landscaping at 93 Highland, the official residence of the University of Toronto President. They were taken while Ray was a grounds keeper in the Physical Plant Department and include views of a retaining wall construction, a slope reconstruction, the rock garden, the greenhouse potting shed and the conservatory. In addition there is one landscape drawing of the rock garden done by Ray. Also included are 75 b&w and colour photographs showing the University of Toronto Bookstore move to the Koefler Centre in 1985 as well as various images of physical plant staff members at work.

This fonds contains records documenting Mr. Davies' university education at McGill University and some records relating to his teaching at University of Toronto (mainly internal publication of Staff notes for courses such as Elementary Surveying), and the Royal Military College, Kingston (1938-39) The majority of the records relate to the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors and its examinations ca 1948-1955. These records include lecture notes and copies of examinations relating to Algebra, Astronomy, Curves, Surveying, Drainage laws, etc. and collected and produced while operating his Tutorial School.

In particular the letters relate to matters in the Departments of Pharmacology and Physiology, as well as the Faculty of Medicine, Hart House and campus societies. B2000-0028: The records document the Women's Auxiliary of the University Settlement. The Women's Auxiliary was established in 1920, ten years after the creation of the University Settlement. The records in this accession consists of histories of the Women's auxiliary, its constitution, lists of members, correspondence and minutes from their committee meetings. Files also document the University Settlement Board meetings, the Camp Boulderwood initiative, and literature distributed by the University Settlement itself. Also includes a photograph of Marilyn MacDonald, president of the Women's Auxiliary University Settlement accepting the Annual Commnunity Leadership Award on behald of the auxiliary.
