A1969-0003: The materials in this accession, transferred from the University of Toronto’s Department of Philosophy, consist mostly of the papers of Fulton H. Anderson, who was chairman of the Department of Philosophy from 1946 to 1962. Also included are some of the papers of George S. brett, who was Chariman of the same department prior to Anderson. The covering dates of the whole accession are 1912-1958.

This material has been divided into four general categories:

I. Chairmanship Papers -- Anderson’s and Brett’s correspondence in their capacity as Chairman of the Department of Philosophy.

II. Professional Papers -- Correspondence, class notes, and other material relating to Anderson’s and Brett’s roles as Professors of Philosophy.

III. Philosophy Papers -- Manuscripts, book reviews, drafts of articles and correspondence reflecting Anderson’s vocation as a professional philosopher.

IV. Personal Papers -- Anderson’s tax returns, insurance claims, and some personal correspondence.

The folders of material in the seven boxes have been numbered consecutively from 1-377 for easy reference. The following pages of this finding aid outline in greater detail the scope and content of material in each of the above-mentioned four general divisions

James Alexander Little fonds

The records in this accession document Dr. Alick Little’s research, teaching and publication activities over a forty-year medical career with the University of Toronto and two teaching hospitals, Sunnybrook and St. Michael’s in Toronto. Arranged in six series, the records reflect Dr. Little’s primary professional activity as a medical researcher and administrator of multiple medical studies. Areas of research include the relationship of lipids and heart disease, hereditary fructose intolerance and coronary atherosclerosis. His activities in various professional associations both in Canada and the United States, including his participation on committees, as well as his role in University of Toronto academic and administrative functions are not documented in any detail. Series 1 contains general correspondence with colleagues, students, faculty and administrators at the University of Toronto and other teaching hospitals relating to research, teaching and publication activities. Also included are letters of reference for his staff, research associates and students as well as records documenting other professional relationships with organizations such as the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

The records documenting his activities at Sunnybrook Hospital are primarily concerned with his participation in the Atherosclerosis Project sponsored from 1952 to 1962 by the Department of Veterans Affairs. This study was one of the first in Canada to study the link between lipids and heart disease. These records document fairly completely the administrative history of this study at Sunnybrook, the nature and scope of the research conducted by Dr. Little and his team, the data collected as well as the research results. Series 5 consists of patient case files and summarized data for both control and study groups, data files on other diseases studied in conjunction with the primary study, correspondence, annual reports, and manuscripts of articles.

Although his association with St. Michael’s Hospital dates from the early 1950’s when he established the Diabetic Clinic, the records in Series 2 document primarily his activities following the establishment of the Toronto/McMaster Lipid Research Clinic (LRC) in 1973. In addition to his role as Director of the LRC (see A2002-0009), Dr. Little spearheaded the establishment of other programs at St.Michael’s Hospital. These include the Clinical Investigation Unit and the Lipid Research Laboratory. Records of the Clinical Investigation Unit’s fructosemia case study are included within this series. His participation in the hospital’s Advisory Committee, Department of Medicine and as director of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism is also documented in this series. Grant application records in Series 4 document requests for funds for other studies on related topics from 1968 to 1992 from the Ontario Heart Foundation (and its successor body, the Heart and Stroke Foundation) as well as Health and Welfare Canada and the U.S. National Institutes of Health. These records also document through curriculum vitae and other records many of the people who were members of the study team collaborating with Dr. Little.

While the bulk of records related to Dr. Little’s work at the Toronto/McMaster Lipid Research Clinic are included in A2002-0009, research material from specific studies conducted through the Toronto McMaster Lipid Research Clinic comprise Series 7 of the J. A. Little fonds. Documentation includes material related to the Apolipoprotein C-II Deficiency Study, the Coronary Primary Prevention Trial (CPPT), as well as components of the multi-year Toronto McMaster Lipid Research Clinics Population (Prevalence) Studies.

Throughout his career, Dr. Little wrote, lectured and published extensively on his own and as part of a research group. Series 3 provides a fairly complete collection of his manuscripts of both published and unpublished writings dating from his time as research associate to professor of medicine at the University of Toronto. Articles on the results of the Department of Veterans Affairs study will be found in Series 5. Manuscripts relating to the official reports produced for the Toronto/McMaster Lipid Research Project are not among these papers and will be found in A2002-0009.

Little, James Alexander

Peterkin Williamson Family fonds

B2013-0020: 1910-1918: Documents, photographs and artifacts document three generations of the Peterkin - Williamson family. Most of the items relate to Marie Peterkin (B.A. 1919) including a photo album with family photos, photos of fellow students, house parties in Bala and the Toronto Island, convocation,, fellow female workers on break at the munitions factory during World War I. There are also a few items for Ruby Peterkin, aunt to Marie Peterkin, who served in Salinika as nurse in the No. 4 Canadian General Hospital. There are a few photos including two from Salonika as well as an engraved letter opener from her time overseas. Marie Peterkin married John Williamson (B.A. 1910) and their daughter is the donor of this accession Mary Williamson (B.A. 1955). This accession includes the graduating portrait for each as well as two UT letters earned by Mary.

B2014-0013: Photo album originally belonged to John D. Williamson (B.A. 1910) and documents various members and activities of the Williamson family members. Photos show campus views of grounds and students ca. 1906 – 1917 as well as a trip to western Canada 1912, and to Temagami 1916 and 1917. There are also two portraits of J.Peter Williamson, son of John D. Williamson.

B2017-0015: Includes 60th Anniversary Distinguished Graduate Award medal, won by Mary Williamson, alumnus of the Faculty of Library and Information Science. Includes accompanying photograph and letter. One photograph of Marie Peterkin (Williamson) taken ca. 1950 with former U.C. classamate Vida Peene (U.C. 1919). Finally there are a series of photographer proof portraits of J.Peter Williamson in military uniform, 1951.

B2019-0026: Consists of Two binders of collected documents on Marie Peterkin (B.A. 1919) and John Williamson (B.A. 1910) including memoriabilia, legal documents, photographs, diaires, correspondence and some family histories. This accession also has a photo album documenting the couple's trips to Bermuda and Florida in the 1950s and 1960s. There are two oversized certificates for John Williamson.

Records in this fonds document Prof. Prentice’s career from his early years as a graduate student up until his retirement in 1995 with special emphasis on the 1960s to the mid 1980s. The bulk of the records (Series 1, 4, 5 and 6) focus on his pioneering research in physics and the various scientific collaborations in which he took part. These records, that include correspondence, notes, minutes of meetings and agenda of associations, papers and addresses not only document Prof. Prentice’s career but reveal much about the international co-operation among scientist in the world of experimental particle physics. They also document the various associations, committees and groups that facilitated this co-operation. Series 2, 3, 9 document his role as a teacher and faculty member of the Department of Physics. Records relating to his own education can be found in Series 7 while his activities as a social activist are documented in Series 8.

Correspondence with students, letters of recommendation and her leadership on associations and projects document her wide influence among historians. Since she was a pioneer in the teaching of women’s history, her teaching files found in Series 9 are important resources in studying women’s history as an emerging discipline in higher education.

Perhaps most importantly however, this fonds documents the network of Canadian academics, most of which were women, in the area of women’s history, the history of education and women’s studies in general. Many of Prof. Prentice projects and publications were collaborative and therefore the fonds documents her relationship with this network of women historians. It is also evident that through these collaborations, Prof. Prentice was not only at the centre of women’s studies within her own generation but also influenced the next generation of scholars who have gone on to make their own contributions in history departments and women’s studies programs throughout Canadian universities.

Prof Prentice is a pioneer in both teaching and researching women’s history. As a result, these records will be of interest to anyone researching the evolution of women’s history as a discipline, the teaching of the history of education and women’s history as well the role of women in higher education.

Records in this fonds document to a limited degree the two writings noted above. There are galley proofs, some correspondence and numerous reviews documenting Christianity and Classical Culture. While there is no draft of any form of Thucydides, there is one file containing correspondence, comments and reviews. It is possible however that notes found in Series 5 relate to the research done for both books as well and lectures and other writings. Series 5 is by far the most extensive series accounting for nearly half the volume of records in this fonds and include not only notes but a bibliographic card index and books from Cochrane’s library that he had annotated.

Apart from his two major publications, Cochrane gave many lectures, wrote reviews and articles. A bibliography can be found in Appendix 1. At the time of his death, it was anticipated that his Yale lectures on St. Augustine would be published as a sequel to Christianity and Classical Culture. He was also doing research on historian Carl Becker and Greek jurisprudence. Early in his career, he wrote a report for the National Council of Education on the teaching of history and civics in Canadian schools (April 1923). He later teamed up with University of Toronto Librarian W.S. Wallace, to write a school textbook entitled This Canada of Ours, an Introduction to Canadian Civics. (Oxford University Press, 1924). Records relating to all of these works can be found in Series 3 and 4.

There were other aspects of his life that are, to a limited degree, documented in these records. As noted above, he was dean of University College residence – the first to hold this position since 1899. His appointment corresponded with the opening of the men’s commons room in University College. Some routine correspondence relating to this can be found in Series 1. Cochrane’s role as a teacher is somewhat better covered with several series of lecture notes as well as annotated exams. There are however no records relating to his administration of the Department of Ancient History while he chaired the department after 1929.

While there are no records relating to his participation in the 1st World War, two aspects of his life during the 2nd World War are fairly well documented. In Series 1, there is extensive correspondence and notes relating to the Oxford evacuees, especially regarding the children of family friend Kenneth Bell and more notably the two Clark children who stayed with the Cochranes. As well, there are extensive records documenting his position as advisor to the Minister of Justice on the committee hearing appeals from prisoners interned under the Defence of Canada Regulations, including case files on several notable communists such as Tim Buck, J B. Salsberg, Jacob Penner, Leslie Morris, Fred Rose, Bill Kashtin and Stanley Ryerson. Cochrane also co-authored a Memorandum on the Communist Party in Canada for the Ministry of Justice that discusses whether the Communist Party should continue to be illegal in view of the fact that the USSR was by now an ally. These records are found in Series 6.

Finally, some family photographs have been kept and mainly document Cochrane’s two children, Mary Ann and Hugh David Cochrane.

The fourth series, “The Time Traveler TV Movie”, includes story research notes, script drafts, shooting script, art design research, casting material, development agreement, series bible, casting VHS cassettes, six first draft episodic scripts, production stills, camera reports, production notes, raw footage, handwritten tape-logs, director’s notes, production journal, mini DV video cassettes, DVD data discs, digital mov files, digital TIFF files, DVD discs, Blu-ray discs, HDCAM video cassettes, Betacam SP video cassettes, internal hard drives, textile wardrobe items, relating to the production of the TV movie.

Note there are two video cassettes (Betcam & HDCAM) in this series which have a Cree audio dub of the pilot episode, as well as versioning notes and a time-coded translation of the script in Cree and English.

The fifth series, “Works in Development”, includes textual materials such as writing notes, research notes, screenplays, beat sheets, grant applications, funding paperwork, development notes for various unproduced works. The series also contains audio-visual materials such as Mini-DV audition tapes, VHS video cassettes, and 3/4 inch U-Matic video cassettes of live comedy shows.

The sixth series, “The Chair short film”, includes textual production materials, digital prints on data CD, rough cuts on VHS video cassette, as well as final edit on DVD-R and mini DV cassette for a short film written by Sally O'Neill, and produced by Richard Story and Sally O’Neill.

The seventh series, “Duke Redbird short film”, includes promotional postcard, DVDs, DVD-R, mini DV and VHS video cassette, featuring rough cuts and final edit of the short documentary.

The eighth series, “Elusive short film”, includes script drafts for the short film and feature formats, casting documents, financing and distribution materials, photographic prints, shooting script, shot lists, VHS video cassettes, Mini DV video cassettes, DVDs, and a 3 ½ inch floppy disk relating to the production of the short film.

The ninth series, “Canadian Aboriginal Archive Project”, includes a soundtrack on audio cassette, interviews with actor Lorne Cardinal, release agreement, funding applications, digital script on 3 ½ inch floppy disk, VHS video cassettes and Mini DV video cassettes relating to the production of the project.

The tenth series, “Writing Projects”, includes textual materials relating to Story’s writing, such as a book proposal, draft, and supporting press materials for Producing & Directing an Independent Digital Movie; a sales kit, notes, correspondences, and finished drafts of The Portable Film School; and a number of 3 ½ inch floppy disks with other works.

The eleventh series, “European Mime Tour 1990”, includes VHS video cassettes, 3/4 inch U-Matic video cassettes, audio cassettes, 33 rpm audio record, photographic prints, as well as ephemera and artifacts from the tour.

The twelfth series, “Personal Calendars 1986 – 2011”, includes hand-written and colour-coded monthly calendars for each year. The calendar for 2008 is not included. Items were digitized by donor, prior to donation. The digital files are not included in this donation.

The thirteenth series, “Teaching Materials”, includes textual materials such as course notes, course descriptions, exam papers, feedback forms, film festival programmes, flipbooks, grant applications and film release press kits used as teaching examples. The series contains 36 VHS video cassettes of commercially released film productions used in the donor’s course curriculums. Photographs and digital prints are included in some of the press kits in the series. Also included are 7 mounted 35mm colour transparencies of production stills from commercially released film titles.

The fourteenth series, “Personal Files”, includes materials relating to the donor’s teenage years in Vancouver, and his interest in the punk and skateboarding scenes. The series includes commercial and independent music releases on 33rpm and 45rpm discs, as well as newspaper clippings, photographs, skateboarder magazines, newsletters, stickers, club membership cards, flags, and various ephemera. Artifacts include a medal, trophy, ribbons, and rosettes from skateboarding competitions.

The fifteenth series, “Book Collection”, includes a range of published books relating to the donor’s creative influences. Authors represented included Gaston Bachelard, Walter Murch, Friedrich Nietzsche and Andrey Tarkovsky.

The sixteenth series, “Indigenous Collection”, includes materials relating to the donor’s creative work and teaching in the Indigenous and Aboriginal media communities, in Canada and internationally. Textual materials include press clippings, festival brochures, media directories, training leaflets, magazines and publications relating to Indigenous issues. The series also includes commercially released DVDs and CDs from Indigenous artists, and festival tote bags.
