    Biographical history

John Beatty was born in Ireland and converted at twenty-one years old, becoming a Methodist and a class leader. He immigrated to New York in 1807, and then to Canada West [Upper Canada] in 1819, settling "in the vicinity of the Credit," where he opened his house at Meadowvale as a preaching place for Wesleyan itinerants and was himself a Leader and Local Preacher. From 1826 to 1827, Beatty was working "under the Chairman" at "Yonge Street" and was received as a Probationer in 1828. In 1830, he became Agent of Upper Canada Academy. He served at Newmarket and Lake Simcoe, and then at Belleville where he was ordained as an Elder in either 1830 or 1833. Beatty served in London (1833), Toronto Township (1834), Yonge Street (1835), and in 1836, became Agent of Upper Canada Academy again, where he continued to serve as Agent, Steward, and then Governor until 1842 when he retired in Cobourg. He died June 30, 1864.
