Biographical history

Keath Fraser, born December 25 1944 in Vancouver, is a Canadian author and activist. He received a BA and MA from the University of British Columbia before going on to a PHD in English from the University of London. He taught English at the University of Calgary in the 1970s before moving back to Vancouver to pursue writing full time. His writing includes Bad Trips, a collection of authors’ stories about unpleasant travel experiences, the novel Popular Anatomy (1996) which was short-listed for a Governor General Award, as well as the biography of friend Sinclair Ross entitled As for Me and My Body (1997). His work The Voice Gallery (2002) charts his attempts to regain his voice after suffering for a long period with Spasmodic Dysphonia, a rare vocal disorder. Fraser was also the president of the Canadian Indian Village Aid Society in the 1990s.

Scope and content

This accession of Keath Fraser’s papers represents the personal and professional life of the author. Fraser’s professional career are captured through an abundance of donated material, this includes: drafts of his published works, correspondence to publishers, editors and other authors, research notes and newspaper clippings, as well as calendars and diaries. In addition to being an author, Keath Fraser was acting president of charity organization Canadian India Village Aid (CIVA), and this is represented through correspondences, and documents originating from the organization both from Fraser’s time as president as well as from files from founder George Woodcock (8 May 1912 - 28 Jan. 1995) and his tenure as president. Additional material captures Fraser’s personal life including: email and letter correspondences, holiday and birthday cards, juvenilia from his children, travel related material, and photographs.
