History
Luigi von Kunits was a conductor, violinist, teacher, and composer. After moving to Toronto in 1912, he founded the Academy String Quartet (1912-1923) at the Canadian Academy of Music where he taught, as well as the New Symphony Orchestra (1922), which was renamed the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) in 1927. Kunits also started a student orchestra at the Toronto Conservatory of Music (renamed the Royal Conservatory of Music in 1947), which he conducted from 1924-1930. This orchestra would eventually become the University of Toronto Symphony Orchestra (UTSO) at the Faculty of Music.
