File consists of a bound volume of typed and annotated lecture notes as well as some handouts (including a syllabus and class list) for Nouwen's fall 1980 lecture course Desert Spirituality and Contemporary Ministry. In addition to a prayer by Thomas Merton and a short note from one of Nouwen's students there is also a list of the course's smaller discussion groups. As well, interspersed throughout the bound volume there are several typed handouts that are excerpts from a typescript which would eventually be published as "The Way of the Heart: desert spirituality and contemporary ministry" in 1981. These typed pages are numbered 34-98. The remaining photocopies and typed handouts include:
-a poem by Phyllis McGiney, "The Temptations of Saint Anthony"
-a tale from Benedicta Ward's "The Sayings of the Desert Fathers"
-Kallistos Ware's "The Spiritual Father in Orthodox Christianity".
