      History

      John Alan Lee was born on August 24, 1933 in Maxville, Ontario. He received a BA in Sociology from the University of Toronto in 1956, and went to work as a factory laborer, working his way up the trade union movement. He returned to the University of Toronto in 1965 for his MA, and then obtained his PhD from the University of Sussex.

      In 1969 he was appointed as a Faculty member at the University of Toronto Scarborough, a role he held through to his retirement in 1999. During his time at UTSC he published a study of the university's use of television in the classrooms, 1971's "Test Pattern". Over the years his research interests focused on the LGBTQ+ community, and he published over 300 articles and books on sociology.

      He died on December 5, 2013.
