Mariel O’Neill-Karch (1942-2023) was a Professor in the Department of French at the University of Toronto, teaching and holding numerous administrative positions at the university for over 40 years.
O’Neill-Karch was an undergraduate student at St. Michael’s College from 1959-1962, and then a graduate student from 1962-1969. During her graduate studies at the college, she also contributed as a Teaching Fellow for two years (1964-1966). O’Neill-Karch began teaching as a Professor in the University of Toronto’s Department of French in 1966, holding the position until her retirement in 2008. Subsequently, she was given the title of Professor Emeritus.
O’Neill-Karch was rewarded with an honourary doctorate degree from St. Michael’s College in 2007.
O’Neill-Karch was associate chair of the Department of French from 1993-1995, and the interim principal of St. Michael’s College from 1997-1998. She was the vice-dean of humanities in the Faculty of Arts & Science from 1998-2002, as well as the principal of Woodsworth College from 2002-2007.
O’Neill-Karch wrote a number of books about Franco-Ontarian literature, culture, and theatre, several of which were written collaboratively with her husband Pierre Karch. She also contributed writing to different academic periodicals, including The Canadian Modern Language Review, University of Toronto Quarterly, Cultures, International Journal of Applied Semiotics, and LittéRéalité.
