Scope and content

File consists of a hard-bound volume of typed and handwritten notes entitled, "Miscellaneous Notes". They appear to have been collected by Nouwen for the purpose of developing an early draft of "Reaching Out". They include typed lecture notes, handouts and reading notes, which Nouwen used in his courses, Pastoral Care, Christian Spirituality, Thomas Merton, and Ministry and Spirituality. The bound volume contains a table of contents which divides the material into eight sections. They are:

  • 'Care and Consolation' (34 pages of typed lecture notes from Nouwen's 1974 course on Pastoral Care)
  • 'Sexuality' (8 pages of notes)
  • 'On the Jesus Prayer' (2 pages of notes)
  • 'On Community' (6 pages of notes)
  • 'From Illusion to Prayer' (8 pages of notes)
  • 'Intimacy' (13 pages of handwritten notes dispersed throughout the bound volume)
  • 'On Memory' (76 pages of typed and handwritten notes, typed diary entries and sermons)
  • 'On Religious Experience' (62 pages of reading notes and meditations)
In addition to Nouwen's handwritten reading notes on the above subjects, there are also typed lecture notes by Nouwen, as well as several handouts, such as excerpts from Chaim Potok's "My Name is Asher Lev", "A Flower Does not Talk" by Abbot Zenkei Shibayama and an excerpt from "Religion in America", entitled, 'Jim'. There are two typescripts of a commencement address by Nouwen for the Seminary College of Our Lady of Providence (Warwick, RI), entitled, "Ministry as Revealing and Affirming", dated May 30, 1974. Also, there are many typed excerpts of Nouwen's diary from his 1974 retreat at the Abbey of the Genesee (Piffard, NY).
This volume was most likely bound between 1975 and 1976, possibly while Nouwen was at the Abbey of the Genesee.
