Biographical history
Richard Henry Steacy, son of John E. Steacy and Eliza Alexander, was born on 30 December, 1869 in Lansdowne, Leeds County, Ontario. He attended Brantford Collegiate Institute and Trinity College, completing the Divinity course in 1899. He was deaconed on 28 May, 1899 at St. John’s, Smiths Falls, and priested on 10 June 1900 at St. John’s Ottawa, where he remained until 1903. From 1903 to 1909 he served in Bells Corners and then moved to All Saints’, Westboro in 1909, remaining there until his retirement in 1946. He was Rural Dean of Ottawa from 1939 to 1942.
In 1914, Steacy was named the first Director General of Canadian Chaplain Services, Canadian Expeditionary Forces, by General Sam Hughes. He served in this capacity until 1917. Mentioned in despatches several times, he achieved the rank of colonel in 1916. In 1917 he was made a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George.
Steacy married Elsie Mary Denham, daughter of the Hon. Digby Denham, former premier of Queensland, Australia, in 1914. The couple had six children: John Digby Graham, Richard Henry, Harold Robert, Charles Walter, Elsie Mary (Mrs. Jack Kibble), and Winifred Muriel.
Colonel the Rev. Steacy died in Ottawa on 11 April 1950.

The records remained in the Steacy family until 2013 when they were given to Trinity College by Anne Steacy, granddaughter of Richard H. Steacy.

Fonds consist of personal documents, notebooks, correspondence, and official documents from Richard H. Steacy’s student days at Trinity College, his time as Chaplain during the First World War, and his role in the church community following the war. Files also include newspaper clippings, poems written by Steacy and others, bibles, photographs and several artefacts from the war.
