Biographical history

Richard Pinch Bowles was a graduate of Victoria University (B.A., Master’s and Divinity degrees) who was ordained as a Methodist minister in 1888. After serving several prominent pastorates, Dr. Bowles joined the Faculty of Theology of Victoria University in 1906. He became President/Chancellor in 1913, holding this post until retiring in 1930.

Fonds consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence re family, friends, Victoria University, charities and social and other activities and interests, [n.d.], 1913–1929; addresses for special Victoria University occasions, and on various subjects including theology and the relationship of students to the university, [n.d.], 1919–1928; baccalaureate addresses, 1915, 1916, 1923, 1924, 1925, 1927, 1928; address by Bowles and addresses by others at his installation as President, 1913; lecture notes, [n.d.]; manuscripts of theological articles/books, 1946–1947; and a historical account of Dr. Bowles ancestors.
