Notice biographique

Sadie Gairns, a native of Toronto, graduated with a B.A. in Household Science from University College, University of Toronto, in 1919. She then studied under J.R.R. Macleod and received an M.A. in Physiology in 1922. In the fall of 1922, she was hired as a research assistant to F.G. Banting, with whom she worked closely for the next nineteen years. (Her name appears with his on seven research papers between 1924-1934.) She also came to assume increasing responsibility for the efficient operation of the Department of Medical Research at the Banting Institute. In the spring of 1941, following Banting's death, she resigned from the Department. She died in Toronto in 1986.

Portée et contenu

Collection of photographs, offprints, clippings, memorabilia and some correspondence chiefly relating to F.G. Banting and to Gairns' work as his assistant in the Department of Medical Research of the Banting Institute. The collection also includes some personal memorabilia. Most of the printed material about Banting and the photographs are duplicated in the Banting Papers (MS Coll. 00076).
