Scope and content

File consists of a one-page handout titled "Introduction to the Spiritual Life Self-evaluation Form." This form has been adapted from similar forms distributed by Nouwen to his students at Harvard. The form contains four questions. They are:

  1. Have you been faithful in attendance at the large lecture/discussion meetings in McGuinn Auditorium, excepting necessary absences of which the staff was advised? What have you found most helpful and how would you describe our unfinished agenda?
  2. Have you been faithful in small group attendance and participation? In what ways has this been fruitful and/or frustrating for you?
  3. Have you begun to write, to preserve a journal of the Spirit in your life? Are patterns emerging? In what sense is this discipline easy or difficult? Have you chosen a person to read your journal?
  4. How is your reading of John's gospel witness to Jesus been going? In what ways has it reinforced or expanded your views about Jesus? What difficulties have arisen?

The course was held Monday to Friday, 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm. The material of the course was drawn almost verbatim from the lecture courses offered by Nouwen in 1984 and 1985, with the typed lecture summary notes only being slightly modified. Nouwen's teaching assistants for this course were Jeff and Ann Dixon Coppage, David LeBlanc, Priscilla Pano, Ruby Hugh, Barbara Ernst, and Peter Weiskel.
