Biographical history
Sidney Earle Smith was President of the University of Toronto from 1945-1957.
He was born in Port Hood, Nova Scotia on March 9, 1897. Raised and educated in the Nova Scotia, he became a lawyer and professor of law, becoming dean of Law at Dalhousie Law School in 1929. In 1934 he was appointed President of the University of Manitoba. He remained in that position until his appointment as President of the University of Toronto in 1945. He remained in this position until 1957, when he resigned to run as a Conservative candidate in the riding of Hastings-Frontenac. He was elected and helped form a minority government with Prime Minister John Diefenbaker where he held the position of Secretary of State for External Affairs in Cabinet. His political career was cut short when he died suddenly of a stroke on March 17, 1959.

Personal records of Sidney Earle Smith, President of the University from 1945 to 1957. Consists of two accessions, the bulk of which are in accession B1972-0001. Includes speeches, addresses, correspondence, scrapbooks, clippings and files created while Minister of External Affairs, 1957-1959. Also includes photos of various events and ceremonies on campus while Smith was President.
Accession B2004-0030 consists of correspondence and attachments from Gilbert E. Jackson, head of Gilbert E. Jackson & Associates to Sidney Earle Smith relating to the work of the Canadian Council for Economic Studies.
