Scope and content
This series consists of syllabi, notes, and lectures prepared primarily by Prof MacDowell for undergraduate and graduate history courses taught at the University of Toronto (Erindale/UTM). In some cases, MacDowell served as a TA for a course or contributed to courses but was not the primary instructor. However, the majority of the records pertain to courses in which she was the primary instructor or developed the course herself. There are also records pertaining to courses taught at York University and McMaster University as well as records related to the supervision of students. The courses reflect Prof MacDowell's interests in labour movements, working class history, and environmental history. Some records also contain terms of appointment and correspondence.

System of arrangement
The original order of the records of this series has been maintained as closely as possible. The records were originally organized in two groups: course descriptions and lecture notes. Within these groups, records were arranged according to the progression of courses (e.g. 100-level courses followed by 200-level, and so on up to graduate level courses). The course descriptions were also organized by the creator according to the kind of course: undergraduate courses, labour courses, graduate courses, miscellaneous courses, and student supervision. These sections have been identified in the file list.
Lecture notes were arranged separately from the course descriptions. In some cases, the lecture notes clearly correspond to the course descriptions (e.g. a course code is provided), however in many instances only the subject of lecture notes is provided (e.g. “labour history”). For this reason, course descriptions and lecture notes have been kept within the same series, but are arranged separately. The lecture notes are arranged according to course number, followed by subject-based lecture notes. In some cases there are lecture notes in with the course descriptions and vice versa.
When known, the university where the course was taught has been indicated as MacDowell taught at different schools and in different capacities.
