Scope and content
Series consists of records related to Bolton’s teaching and public outreach activities from the 1970s to the early 2000s. Series is subdivided into two sections beginning with files related to courses he taught at the University of Toronto, Scarborough College, or Erindale College. Records document over 10 undergraduate and graduate level astronomy courses, including several of which he designed (AST 120, AST 321, AST 422, SCI 199). The courses cover a range of topics including introductory astronomy, solar system astrophysics, observational astrophysics, stellar atmospheres, and binary systems. Records include syllabi, course notes, lecture slides, handouts, examinations, assignments, problem sets, course evaluations, and some student work with feedback from Bolton.
The second section documents several invited lectures and public talks Bolton gave at departmental colloquia, events put on by local groups and astronomical societies, and institutions across Canada and the United States. His talks covered various topics including Comet Halley, Cygnus X-1 and the discovery of black holes, light pollution, instrumentation at the DDO, and star properties. Records include lecture outlines, speaking notes, and lecture slides and transparencies.
For a file list, see Series 6: Teaching and Public Education in Appendix I.
