Scope and content

The images are of zoological specimens, scientists, and places, including the Atlantic Biological Station in St. Andrew's, New Brunswick.

System of arrangement

Most of these slides were removed from an old wooden cabinet labelled "Dr. Bensley." A few slides were from a separate box, which had a note indicating that some had belonged to Dr. Coventry (these are in bos /001; see Part III below). However, the donor believed the slides to have belonged to Professor A. G. Huntsman, a former University of Toronto faculty member in the Dept. of Zoology and concurrently the director of the Atlantic Biological Station. A second slide cabinet labelled "Room 19: Lantern Slides" was nearby.

The cabinet had 20 drawers, only some of which contained slides. Most of the drawers were labelled. There were also labels on the drawers of the empty cabinet. It seems that in some cases at least, the labels on drawers containing slides were incorrect or incomplete. See for instance the note for the 16th drawer, below. The slides have not been visually inspected to see which of the labels were correct.

In order to facilitate the identification of the lantern slides, the finding aid below aims to provide all the information available from the two cabinets. There are three parts to the finding aid. PART I is a list of the labels of drawers that contained no slides. PART II lists the labels found on the empty cabinet. PART III lists the contents of the five archival containers into which the drawers containing slides were emptied. The drawers and labels to which the slides corresponded is indicated.
