Scope and content
This series consists of documents collected and created by Ramkhalawansingh over the course of over 50 years of advocacy work on women’s issues, with emphasis on employment and pay equity, barriers faced by racialized women, and reproductive rights.
The series begins with bibliographies and subject files of articles and published materials for use in women's studies classes. Ramkhalawansingh was a founding member of the student-initiated teaching collective that introduced the teaching of women’s studies at the U of T.
There are also records related to the Ontario Advisory Council on Women’s Issues (OACWI) – Ramkhalawansingh was an appointed member to the Council from 1983-1988. The OACWI was charged with advising the provincial government on women’s issues. In her role on the Council, she advocated for changes to labour legislation (focused on employment and pay equity), reproductive choice, and protections for domestic workers (who were often racialized), amongst other issues. Included in this series are research and policy briefs, event proceedings, publications and resources created by the OACWI. There are also several federal government reports and documents collected by Ramkhalawansingh that document parallel initiatives at the federal level.
