Scope and content

Subseries consists of records relating to Nevitte’s role as the Principal Investigator for the Canadian segment of the World Values Survey (WVS) from 1991 – 2006. The WVS is a collaborative longitudinal social research project that involves over 100+ countries and has typically been conducted every 5-10 years since the first wave in 1981. The project explores the political and social values of individuals; how they change over time; and their implications. The data provide insight into people’s beliefs and attitudes towards topics such as democracy, protests and political behaviour, the economy, globalization, institutions, work, immigrants, ethnic minorities, gender and sexual equality, family structures, national identity, and the environment.

The records primarily reflect the development, administration, and findings of the second to fifth waves (1990 – 1994; 1995 – 1997; 1999 – 2004; 2005 – 2009) of WVS as well as several related sub-projects which sought to analyze subsets of the WVS data. Some of the records also relate to the first (1981 – 1984) and sixth (2010 – 2014) waves of WVS. Materials include research proposals, contracts with the Government of Canada, correspondence, draft questionnaires, codebooks, technical documentation, ethics review applications, financial records, datasets, tables and figures, and reports. Additionally, there are some files consisting of speakers’ notes and agendas from conferences, including the Expert Meeting of the International IDEA, United Nations Development Programme, and the World Values Survey Association in April 2015.

Subseries also consists of project proposals, background materials, figures and tables, outlines, and draft chapters for two unpublished books about the findings of the WVS as it related to Canada. The first aimed to analyze and provide an overview of the Canadian WVS data from the first four waves (1981 – 2000). The second book, Political Generations: 25 Years of Value Change, aimed to analyze and provide an overview of the Canadian WVS data from Waves 1 to 5 (1981 – 2006).

Digital files include additional draft chapters and proposals related to the unpublished WVS books and background materials. Also included are photographs from the Expert Meeting of the International IDEA, United Nations Development Programme, and the World Values Survey Association.
