        History

        Campbell Hughes, born in 1913, was a long-time editor and publisher in Canada. He taught school in Orillia and Hamilton, Ont., between 1933 and 1947. He started work at Ryerson Press in 1947, first as a sales representative before becoming an associate editor. He moved to Charles E. Merrill Books in 1960, where he was vice-president and editor-in-chief. He moved back to Ryerson Press in 1965 to become its General Manager of Publishing and Printing. He founded Van Nostrand Reinhold Ltd., in 1970, working as its president until 1978. He was president of Beaufort Books between 1980-1983. He served on various boards and councils, including a stint as president of the Canadian Book Publishers' Council in 1970-1971. He died in 1990.
