        History

        Stuart King Jaffary was born in Macleod, Alberta on 16 June 1899. In the 1920s, he worked as a social worker-psychologist for Mental Hygiene Clinics in Northern Alberta. He taught in the department of Social Work at Tulane University and the University of Denver, before joining the School of Social Work at the University of Toronto in 1940. He obtained his PhD in social work at the University of Chicago and his dissertation, The Mentally Ill and Public Provision for their Care in Illinois, which was subsequently published by the University of Chicago Press in 1942. In 1943, Jaffary worked with Leonard Marsh in developing the Report on Social Security for Canada. He would remain at the University of Toronto, serving first as a professor and later as Dean of the School of Social Work, until his retirement in 1964. He wrote and researched extensively on the profession of social work, criminology, rehabilitation, penal reform and corrections in Canada and served as President of the Canadian Penal Association. He published numerous journal articles, as well as the book Sentencing of Adults in Canada (1963). Jaffary died in 1964.
