        History

        Hugh Kane was born in 1911 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and moved to Canada when he was a child. He started work for McClleland and Stewart in 1937, and, except for his service with the Royal Canadian Air Force between 1942-46, worked there until 1969. He moved to Macmillan Company of Canada in 1969 to become president. He became vice chairman in 1972 when Maclean Hunter bought the company. He died in Stratford, Ont., in 1984.
