    Biographical history

Lois May Sutherland (née Hardwick) was born in Stratford, Ontario in 1936. She attended Victoria College and received her B.A. in 1959. While studying at Victoria College, she met Canadian film and stage actor Donald Sutherland. He moved to England in 1958 to attend the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, and Lois joined him after her graduation. They were married in 1959.

In 1960, the Sutherlands moved to Perth, Scotland after Donald secured work at the Perth Repertory Theatre Company. They returned to London after Donald’s contract ended in 1961, where Lois worked as a secretary for the Ballet Rambert. She and Donald divorced in 1966, and Lois remained in London for the rest of her life.

Lois Sutherland trained as a teacher and taught at Our Lady of Muswell RC Primary School in London before becoming headteacher (principal) at Highgate Primary School. She died in Hampstead in 2010.
