Lois May Sutherland (née Hardwick) was born in Stratford, Ontario in 1936. She attended Victoria College and received her B.A. in 1959. While studying at Victoria College, she met Canadian film and stage actor Donald Sutherland. He moved to England in 1958 to attend the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, and Lois joined him after her graduation. They were married in 1959.

They returned to London after Donald’s contract ended in 1961, where Lois worked as a secretary for the Ballet Rambert. She and Donald divorced in 1966, and Lois remained in London for the rest of her life.
