Scope and content
This series encompasses the surviving files compiled by Professor Safarian in connection with his research on foreign ownership, especially with regard to his publications Foreign Ownership of Canadian Industry (1966), Governments and Multinationals (1983), FIRA and FIRB : Canadian and Australian policies on foreign direct investment (1985), and Multinational Enterprise and Public Policy (1993). The files are composed primarily of confidential interviews and a research grant application and research reports for his 1993 book. The arrangement is in ascending date by title of the book.
The first interviews were done in 1956 with foreign-owned firms as research input to Part II of the Irving Brecher and Stephen Reisman study, Canada-United States economic relations (1957) that was prepared for the Royal Commission on Canada’s Economic Prospects. The next set of interviews was done in 1959 for Professor Safarian’s Foreign Ownership of Canadian Industry (1966). It is followed by several files of interviews (about 600 typed pages, with additional notes) on policies on multinational enterprises conducted between 1976 and 1989 for the last three books mentioned above. Included is a file of interviews done in Europe in 1976-1977 for articles on policies towards foreign-owned firms. The series ends with the grant application.
