Scope and content

The “United States” sub-series consists of manuscript and printed maps of the United States. A number of maps date to the period of the Seven Years War and the American Revolution, reflecting Simcoe’s interest in these two conflicts.
The maps and plans originating during Simcoe’s tenure as Lieutenant Governor are concerned with the southern Great Lakes region and reflect his preoccupation with the defense of Upper Canada and his responsibility for overseeing the transfer of British border posts to the United States under Jay’s Treaty (1793). In addition, a number of the maps relate to Simcoe’s efforts to preserve British influence in the Ohio Valley and maintain relations between the British government and the Shawnee, Waⁿdát (Wyandot), and Myaamiaki (Miami), nations.
