Administrative history
The establishment of the Department of History is unclear. In 1864, the Department of History and the Department of English Literature emerged from the Chair of History and English Literature, which had been established in 1852, however by as early as 1891 it was known as the Department of Modern History, and in 1895, as the Department of Modern History and Ethnology. In 1906, the name was changed to the Department of History and Ethnology, and finally simply the Department of History in 1975 as the Department of Ethnology split in 1922.
