The Department of Italian Studies was established in 1973 on the division of the Department of Italian and Hispanic Studies into two new departments: the Department of Italian Studies and the Department of Hispanic Studies. The Department of Italian and Hispanic Studies had originally been established in 1892 as the Department of Italian and Spanish Studies, in 1948 it became the Department of Italian, Spanish and Portuguese, and in 1960, the Department of Italian and Hispanic Studies.
